I had to step away from Once Upon A River. I just couldn't get into it. So I am starting this one for #MonthOfBoyne. Anyone else started reading their Boyne books? #EadieB #AuthorAMonth

#Shadow was grounded today. He knocked a chair over and put a giant gash in our wall. 🤬 Grounded! #Shippy @Zelma

Zelma What a bad boy! Skippy keeps knocking my drinks over lately. 3 full glasses of water all over the living room floor in the last two weeks. I switched to plastic only a long time ago! 6y
MinDea @Zelma what a stinker! What is with cats 🤪 6y
CindyRene Shadow is a pretty Kitty. I'm sure it makes up for her naughtiness ?? I'm working on my Boyne book today too. Reading "This House is Haunted". 6y

MinDea @CindyRene I have that to read too! I look forward to discussing it with you! 6y
CindyRene @MinDea that sounds great! I look forward to it! 6y
MinDea @Amiable great! I hope you enjoy it! 6y
rubyslippersreads Oh #Shadow! Nicky and Sadie are proud of you. 😹 6y
MinDea @rubyslippersreads 😸😸😸 6y
rubyslippersreads @Amiable I want to read this one, since I‘m fascinated by the Romanovs. 6y
MinDea @rubyslippersreads is A House of Special Purposes about the Romanovs?!? 😱 6y
Lmstraubie But he's soooo cute 😻 6y
MinDea @Lmstraubie That's why he's still part of the family! 😆😆 (I'm only joking) 🤪 6y
Soubhiville I just finished this. It was good, I especially liked Bruno‘s mispronunciations. 6y
Crazeedi My boyne is on my kindle waiting for me. Should be next up. You kitty is just precious 6y
Crazeedi @MinDea yes it is, I read it, it is very good 6y
Crazeedi @Amiable loved that book 6y
Amiable @MinDea @Crazeedi @rubyslippersreads It's good so far! I don't think Boyne can write a bad book. (edited) 6y
mcipher Oh, no! Terrible kitties. Ours are determined to destroy our couch 😬 6y
MinDea @Crazeedi I didn't know that! I keep wanting to read about them so now I really want to read it! 6y
MinDea @mcipher cats are legit jerks. 🤪😸 6y
julesG Are you okay? You're pretty silent. Miss you. Missed #HumpDayPost. 6y
MinDea Hey @julesG Yes I am OK. My new job keeps me so busy and I just have had no time for anything elae. Thank you for asking if I was doing OK. 💙 Hope everything is well for you! 6y
julesG Yep, doing okay. Glad you are okay, too. Being busy at a new job is something positive. 😘 6y
TrishB I was about to ask the same as @julesG Hope the new job is great! 6y
MinDea Thanks @TrishB! I hope things are well for you too! I think I might be a weekend poster for a little while til work settles down just a little. 6y

Hey! It's the end of #MonthOfZusak so I am posting open discussions for each of his 4 books people said they were going to try to read this month.

MinDea This is the one I really wanted to get to and wasn't able to. I'll have to read it in January and come back to this discussion. I heard that it was tough going at the beginning but then got better. Was that your experience? Would you recommend this book? 6y
Andrew65 I did this one in audio and possibly not the best format with all the swapping around of the timelines and characters in the first half of the book. Only really felt it came into its own in the second half. Easy to see why some had given up on it by then. I really enjoyed the latter part of the books and some moments that hit home. 6y
See All 11 Comments
BridgetteM I‘m on page 260. Much slower going than I thought it would be. It was a real struggle at the beginning, but it got better once things started making a little bit of sense. 6y
BookwormM I struggled with the beginning of this as it was quite slow but by the end I was fully invested 6y
That-Bookish-Hiker I haven‘t started this one. 🤦🏽‍♀️ 6y
MelissaSue81 I wasn‘t in on this buddy read or whatever.. but I‘d be up for some discussion because I‘m really fuzzy on some things that happened. I agree with @andrew65 that audio is not great for this one.. I really would like to be able to flip back and reread with the Changing timelines and sooo much symbolism.. and audio makes that difficult.. :/ (edited) 6y
MinDea @MelissaSue81 this was a completely open read so please join the discussion!!!! 6y
Joanne1 I agree this could be hard going on audio and the very beginning is quite fuzzy. But this is my pick of 2018. I absolutely adored it. The Dunbar boys very quickly wormed their way into my heart and have stayed there ever since. Equally, Zusak‘s writing I thought was utterly masterful, the symbolism perfection. I loved his use of short sentences and the choppy style. He left space for the reader to give the text meaning. And that ending!! 6y
MelissaSue81 So can someone explain to me exactly what happened to Carrie and why Clay thought it was his fault? And I understand that Clay helped his mom die but what happened? What was the peg and the mattress? (I clearly missed a lot on Audio! I zone out sometimes!) 6y
BooknerdsLife @MinDea sorry I haven't been able to read any of his books in December :( Christmas have been way too stressful than I've expected. But would love to see everyone's discussion ...And thank you again for the tag 😘💕🙌 6y

MinDea I absolutely love this book! It was not aaaaaaas good the second time around but I loved it. 6y
julesG I truly liked this book. But, as a German, I also had some issues with it. Especially with some of the German language and swearing. A lot of it was translations from English into German that no German would say like that. Some of the swearing was very inventive. Even my friends from Bavaria did not know those words. 6y
See All 32 Comments
MinDea @JulesG 😆😆😆 I would say I had that top ofind when I was reading this the second time around and wondered how it would really be said. I remember getting tired of the whole Saumensch and Saukerl part in the book. 6y
julesG What really rubbed me the wrong way was when Liesl and Max were called "the German and the Jew" - I'd understood "the communist's child and the jew", since both are actually German, even if Max had lost his citizenship due to his religion. 6y
MinDea Who was your favorite and least favorite character? 6y
MinDea @julesG yes! That did bother me too but I think it was your last point there. He was no longer a German cause he lost his citizenship because he was Jewish. 6y
julesG Saukerl is okay. But it's often used in a playful, rather admiring way. Saumensch I had never heard before. Or "arse scratcher" = "Arschkratzer" doesn't make sense in German. Some of the things the second band of thieves by the river said didn't sound German either. And I'd already said that we don't say crystal clear. 6y
julesG I know that not a lot of the things going on during the nazi time made sense. So, I'm willing to let that hang in the air, but I still hate it. 6y
julesG For the record, German windows open like doors. They have hinges. You cannot slide them up. Having seen my fair share of German houses from the last 1000 years, I can assure you, sliding windows are a rarety. 😉 6y
julesG My favourite characters were Death, Max and Hans. 6y
MinDea @julesG 😆😆😆 it's funny the little things you notice. I would never have wondered if German windows do in fact slide up! Here we have both kinds so it wouldn't be weird if I read that in a book. 6y
MinDea @julesG yes! They're all the best. And Liesel. I love her. 6y
julesG Don't get me started on things I notice in books/films. It's an annoying form of OCD. 😁 6y
BookwormAHN @julesG I wondered about some of those words and phrases. Also though I think Rosa was rather like the comic relief of the book. 6y
julesG By the way, the street names of Molchibg - a fictitious town - are weird, too. 6y
julesG @BookwormAHN Rosa was very uncommon. Given that she must have been born in the late 19th century. No woman would have sworn like that. 😁 6y
BookwormAHN My favorite characters were Liesel, Rudy and Hans 💚 6y
MinDea @BookwormAHN yes! Rudy. 💙 His friendship with Liesel if such a great one. 6y
MinDea Did everyone like that you knew what heartache would be coming in the book from the beginning since Death gave it all away or did you wish he had not spoiled things to come? 6y
MinDea I actually wondered if any of those books were real that Liesel stole. 🤔 6y
julesG It's WWII Germany. I actually expected worse. But, still felt for the characters and was very relieved to see Max had made it out of Dachau. 6y
julesG @MinDea Apart from Mein Kampf, they all seem to have been books invented by Zusak. 6y
thereadingowlvina Truth be told, I DNF this book. I really tried but the writing did not work for me. I'm frustrated with myself as this is a book that I always wanted to read. I think I'll watch the movie instead. #unpopularopinion 😪 6y
MinDea @thereadingowlvina maybe audiobook would work? It is definitely worth the read but yes his writing style is different and in his other books I definitely struggled with it. 6y
thereadingowlvina @MinDea That sounds like a good idea. I think I'll give the audioook a try! 😊 6y
BookwormAHN @thereadingowlvina I listened to the audio book version and it was very entertaining. 6y
thereadingowlvina @BookwormAHN Awesome! I'll give it a try! 😁 6y
That-Bookish-Hiker I really loved this book. Knowing what was going to happen beforehand didn‘t ruin the story for me which is weird cause it generally does. I cried so much when Rudy, Hans and Rosa died. I also cried hard when she saw max walking towards the concentration camp. 😭😭 Rudy, Liesel, and Max were my fav characters. 6y
MinDea @That-Bookish-Hiker I remember being like what the hell! Why tell me that at the very beginning but he wrote the book in such a way that it actually made it better knowing. Oh Max. 💔💔💔 6y
MinDea @thereadingowlvina I have struggled with popular books before too but really wanted to get through it. I've heard the audiobook is really good but what I do when this happens is I read a chapter a day. That way I slowly make my way through it and hopefully it starts to pick up but have had ones where even a chapter a day I struggled with. 😆😆😆 6y
Tanisha_A This book, y'all! I loved it. I know I am going to read it again. It's something to be visiting over for the things it teaches you. I loved the relationship between Rudy and Liesel. ❤️ 6y

MinDea I enjoyed this one quite a bit. I thought it was interesting. Who was your favorite person he had to help and who did you dislike the most? 6y
Tove_Reads Hmm, I have to say I did not get on a first name basis with any of the characters. They all felt distant to me. I loved the book thief, but this one, not so much 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
See All 6 Comments
MinDea Yes! I am sitting here thinking and the only character I remember is The Doorman. 😆😆😆 I think I enjoyed this one because I struggled with Underdogs and read this one while trying to get through Underdogs. It was better than Underdogs but not near as good as The Book Thief that's for sure. 6y
That-Bookish-Hiker I really enjoyed this book since it was the first I‘ve read of Zusak. I really liked the family he got Christmas lights for. It was so simple but he made them so happy. 6y
MinDea @That-Bookish-Hiker yes that was probably my favorite one too or the old lady he read to. 6y
