West: A Novel | Carys Davies
post image
Pickpick

A low pick for me, maybe too high expectations - I expected to love it; it was just good 🤷🏻‍♀️

Widower Cy Bellman heads into the American West, searching for living dinosaurs. His lonely young daughter is left behind in the care of her aunt. Despite the wide open spaces and big themes, this is a subtle novella, albeit with a surprising end. It would make for a great book club discussion.

Did I love it? No. It might just stay with me though.

rockpools I‘m going to use this for #booked2022 #involvesanexploration, although you do feel that Bess could learn more exploring the world from home (given the chance) than Cy did on his journeys. @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae 1y
Cinfhen Cool choice!! I read this one and I thought it was really thought provoking!! And I appreciated how the author conveyed so much in under 150 pages!!! 1y
rockpools @Cinfhen It is extremely well-done! It just didn‘t connect with me quite as much as I‘d hoped it would, for some reason. 1y

This is the story of the crew of the Karluk who were stranded for about 9 months on Wrangel Island, north of Siberia. The author describes the ordeal of the men in great detail making it sometimes hard to read but, it's a fast-paced and tense tale that kept me reading past my bedtime wanting to know what happened. Anyone who enjoys survival and/or exploration adventures would like this. It will be published on December 6th.

Cinfhen Sounds fascinating!! I love exploration stories!!! #Stacked 1y

This was like a horror story for me: outdoors, insects, camping, walking, wet clothes, dirty hair, weather, no food, no home.
I‘ll be having nightmares. I think they were bonkers and nothing would make me do this.

54/22 It was interesting listening to this straight after The Haunting of Hill House. I would be very surprised if one was not a homage to the other, there were so many similarities. I seem to be reading a lot surrounding the war years for #scarathlon. I suppose that setting only adds to the darkness of the atmosphere. I quite enjoyed this and the ending left me thinking… I can‘t say more then that. #teammonstermash wordsearch- 540 pts

Magpiegem @Cinfhen I‘m also going to use this for #booked2022 #involvesanexploration 1y
Cinfhen Is this the new Larson fiction?? I definitely want to read it! 1y
Magpiegem @Cinfhen yes it is. I‘ll look out for your review 😊 his historical influences definitely inform his fictional writing. 1y
Cinfhen Yay! I was hoping that would be the case 🥰 1y

This seems like a really good book: maybe it is for somebody who understands science, but that isn‘t me! I was attracted by the description of how it analyzes the intersections of scientific work, gender, and race, but I just wasn‘t able to follow it.

The 1st part of this fits
#involvesanexploration #booked2022
as 3 men, on a geographical team at the antarctic are caught in a terrible wind storm. The story is a then different tale abt the older man Doc, + his wife who is used to his absence, managing his rehabilitation from a stroke.Macgregor writes brilliantly abt people + circumstances, his is a unique voice. And So my summer challenge ends

If I‘m going to read nonfiction, this is the kind I need: really good narrative storytelling with fascinating subject matter. Grann does an excellent job weaving his two timelines (Fawcett‘s life leading up to his disappearance in the Amazon in 1925 and Grann‘s own journey to the green hell on Fawcett‘s trail) together. The number one thing I learned: stay the hell out of the Amazon.😱

Great on audio.

Erinsuereads Did not know this was a book! I loved the movie! 2y
sprainedbrain @ErinSueMreads I‘ve wanted to watch the movie for so long… but I stick to my stupid book-first rule. Now I can! 😂 2y
Erinsuereads That's hilarious. I have a pretty strict movie-first rule 🤣🤣🤣 2y

sprainedbrain @ErinSueMreads that sounds way more fun than my rule. 😆 2y
Erinsuereads I'm not spoiler sensitive so I don't have to worry about that and I am ALWAYS disappointed by the movie, so if I watch it first the book adds to something I liked, rather than me hating the movie for taking away things I loved from the book. Figured that out with hunger games. It's not fool proof but I've got like a 90% satisfaction rating on it 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 2y
KateReadsYA Hey ill be sending you paybacks a witch by early next week! How'd you like witches steeped in gold?? 2y

Did I listen to 14 hours of an audiobook about hummingbirds!? (Actually no, I speed it up, but that‘s the duration, set by Libby!) Either way, it was a lot of book about a tiny bird. But it was actually much more about the author‘s travels to find different types of hummingbirds. I do wish this had a bit more on hummingbird behavior, as my kids are very interested when they visit our feeder, and I wanted to share tidbits with them. 🪺

CBee Hummingbirds are probably my favorite bird ♥️ 2y
Cinfhen Cool choice 🪺🪶 a co-worker went to Costa Rica and saw the most gorgeous birds, especially the hummingbirds @CBee she went as part of a bird watching group. Her photos were MAGNIFICENT 2y

CBee @Cinfhen I would love that! Plus the sloth sanctuary is in Costa Rica so 😍😍😍 2y
Cinfhen My co-worker didn‘t mention the sloth sanctuary @CBee that sounds fabulous although she did show me photos of some sloths in the rainforest🦥 2y
Chelsea.Poole @CBee they‘re truly amazing! And beautiful, to boot! 2y
Chelsea.Poole @Cinfhen that sounds like an amazing trip! And a sloth sanctuary!?! Sign me up!!! 😍 2y
CBee @Cinfhen I love all different types of animals but sloths just get me every time 😍 2y
CBee @Chelsea.Poole yes! I believe they have videos on YouTube - a lot of those are BABY sloths 😍 2y
