The Favorite Sister | Jessica Knoll

I love the reality TV, esp the Realhouswives series so I thought this wouldn‘t disappoint me. I tried to get into this one but had a hard time caring enough about the characters. I was in love more with the idea of the book than the actual plot. I had to force my way through this one. I had such high hopes. #netgalley #lesigh

Pickpick

Absolutely #sequelplease! This book caused me to fall in love with Antoine Laurain as a writer, wonder how many amazing books are out there that I'll never read because I don't speak French, and want to know how a sweet love story is continuing... *sigh* #AprilBookShowers

Books88 The flower is so cool! 8y
Jess_Read_This @ScorpioBookDreams @AJBowers Thank you!! I made it from the pages of an Outlander novel that was beyond loanable state from the local library. Rather than scrap it, we tried to repurpose it 😊 8y
Books88 I hear that, one time my daughters tore apart a Harry Potter book, so I took a big heart hole punch and made some garland to hang, but it looked nothing like your gorgeous flower! Amazing job. ❤ 8y
ScorpioBookDreams @Jess_Read_This I've made a rose from Harry Potter pages before but it's not as nice as yours. 8y
elliemcc11 See... you do do crafts ☺👍 7y

Litsy community, have you seen this yet? "Book Marks" by Lit Hub where they assign a letter grade to books based on the reviews of (direct quote) "critics from the most important and active outlets in literary journalism"... Anyone else think this is hugely problematic on multiple levels??

brendanmleonard It's fucked up, and I like Lit Hub. 8y
KateTheBookworm Me too! I'm really shocked they would do this. Critics from the "most important" literary journals? What does that mean?? 8y
brendanmleonard It seems designed to reinforce bad ideas about what's good literature. 8y

KateTheBookworm ^ Exactly. 8y
KateTheBookworm And not to mention the overwhelming lack of diversity in literary criticism and how that will affect stories about different perspectives and world views. 8y
AlexandraGriffin If they did it based on community reviews, that might be better.... But then again something horrid would end up with an A+ regardless of how poorly written and structured the book is. #lesigh 8y
KateTheBookworm @GriffinAndHerBooks Yeah, I think letter grades are going to be inherently problematic when applied to books. 8y
WordWaller Oh nooo... I like Lit Hub. I don't think that's a good idea at all :( 8y
SusanInTiburon I give them a B for intent; C- for execution; F for originality. That's about a D+ overall. Might need to redo that one. 8y
TheWellReadOwl And, um, The Girls is graded higher than Homegoing? 😳 8y
ramyasbookshelf I might be the only ignorant one - but what is lit hub?? 8y
OffTheBeatenShelf.com Damn! I really liked Lit Hub, but this is just stupid. 😒 8y
Susannah I actually think it's a great idea, though I have not seen the publications Lit Hub is pulling reviews from. Have you read anything about plans to broaden their scope of reviewers? If they're just getting started, they may have picked from really obvious sources first with plans to expand. 8y
thelibraryofmars Nice @Susanintiburon and I totally agree. 8y
SusanInTiburon @Susannah Thank you, truly, for expressing a different reasonable view. I like having a rough guide to relative merit (hence B for intent), but a letter grade feels factitious. I like how Bookmarks Mag does it, with direct quotes from reviews, plus summary and stars. Have you seen that one? 8y
KateTheBookworm @Susannah I haven't read anything about them broadening their scope, though I do think that would be a step in the right direction. 8y
KateTheBookworm @Susanintiburon Agreed. Something about the letter grades just rubs me the wrong way. What's a B, roughly 85%? So is this 85% a book? I need to see a rubric! Haha 8y
Susannah Ah, yes @Susanintiburon I love Bookmarks! I think you're right that summaries and review excerpts would go a long way towards helping readers determine the value of the actual reviews when deciding whether to read a book. 8y
