Arsenic and Old Lace | Joseph Kesselring
post image

Cary Grant is my fave Old Hollywood actor (I own all 72 of his movies 😳). My fave movie of his by far is the hilarious dark comedy Arsenic & Old Lace. It was filmed in 1941 but released in 1944. During this time, Cary became a United States citizen & donated his entire salary from this movie to the war effort. Can‘t recommend it enough!

AnnCrystal 👏🏼🤩🎬😍👍🏼...LOVE Cary Grant! And I'm the worst fan, because I haven't watched all his movies nor do I own them 🤔😂...Bravo! I didn't even know that he donated his entire salary, a sweet Champion!

Excellent Haiku 👏🏼🐝👍🏼🎬🐝💖.

BBC made his life story. I so hope I get to see it one day. Have you? I read that his childhood wasn't a happy one. As an adult, he found his mother (who his father told him was dead), and took care of her 💝.

AnnCrystal P.S.

I always wanted to see a continuation to Arsenic & Old Lace...a fun storyline might be where Mortimer's child or grandchild comes to own the “house“ by inheritance. It's been all boarded up and abandoned by Mortimer. The grandchild goes against the warning left by Mortimer, and plans to open a restaurant or B&B only to learn the place is haunted by the buried bodies in the basement and “the uncle.“

I'm always making up continuations 😂🎬💝.

JenlovesJT47 @AnnCrystal ooh that sounds so intriguing! You should write some fanfiction! I downloaded a copy of the play today, I‘ve never read it. There are a bunch of Cary bios, I‘m not sure which one the BBC is but I‘ve seen most of them, they‘re very good. Jason Isaacs played Cary in a movie a couple of years ago, based on Dyan Cannon‘s book about him. It‘s not perfect but he did a good job. They focus a lot on his mom and their difficult relationship. 6d
JenlovesJT47 @AnnCrystal I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the bio I‘d call the “definitive” one, but it came out in the mid 2000s and I have a copy of it on DVD somewhere, I‘ll have to dig it out. The movie with Jason Isaacs is called Archie. It‘s a miniseries. They mess up the timelines of some of the dates which irked me, but other than that, I enjoyed it. Dyan‘s book is very good, as is his daughter‘s, Jennifer. Can‘t get enough of Cary. ♥️ 6d
AnnCrystal Thank You @JenlovesJT47, I will keep this screen shot for reference info...I need to become a better fan 😂👌🏼, even with my Batman obsession, I am so far behind on info. 💝🤔💝🤗💝. (edited) 6d

Now for another of my favorite movies from Old Hollywood, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (if you haven‘t seen it, please do! Great movie and dialogue and Liz Taylor and Paul Newman might just be the two best looking people I‘ve ever seen together in one place here!)

Obnoxious odor,
smell that? The powerful smell
of mendacity.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this for the #SundayBuddyRead - I‘m a big fan of Old Hollywood but don‘t know as much about the silent era, so this opened up a whole new world for me. It‘s based on a real silent movie star (Colleen Moore) which makes it even better. Would love to go visit her fairy castle in Chicago one day. 4.5⭐️ Thanks for hosting @TheBookHippie ! 🤗

TorieStorieS The fairy castle has been my favorite part of the Museum of Science and Industry for my whole life! They used to have payphone style phones where you listened to the details, but now it plays in a less germy way hahaha! 6mo
JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS I feel like a bad fan because I have never heard of this before reading this book! I love Old Hollywood but don‘t know as much about the silent era. This book was really good and I‘d highly recommend it if you haven‘t read it! Here‘s a book about the dollhouse https://annas-archive.org/md5/7f02c721d5baaae35b9f2655b6538a10 6mo

TorieStorieS I listened to this one already, my book twin! But I grew up with this castle so I think I expected more magic!! 6mo
JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS of course you did, book twin! 😆 There are a bunch of books about Colleen Moore and the doll house on Anna‘s Archive if you‘re interested ❤️ 6mo
TorieStorieS Oooo— I‘m going to check them out now! I have my mom‘s original book on the castle from I think before I was born! I just have to find it… 6mo

I tried to pace myself with this book & only read the required chapters for the week for the #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD but I could NOT put this book down! I‘m a huge fan of Old Hollywood & I loved seeing the main character interact with all of these famous people, right on the cusp of WWII. I read a lot of WWII fiction & this was from a new perspective that I hadn‘t thought about but really appreciate. I‘m also ready to dive into some more ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 F. Scott Fitzgerald books. The author brought him to life in the best way possible. All this to say, I loved this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction, WWII fiction, and/or Old Hollywood. 5⭐️ #historicalfiction #WWII #OldHollywood #CannesFilmFestival (edited) 8mo

I‘m a huge fan of Old Hollywood & Jimmy Stewart is one of my faves. This short collection of poetry is a must for any of his fans. He gives a brief story about the background and why he wrote each poem. You can hear his personality come through in each one. Especially worth reading for the last one about his dog, Beau. 🐶 4⭐️ #poetry #OldHollywood #JimmyStewart #dogs

This was such a fun book full of juicy Hollywood gossip. It covers about 100 years from 1914 to 2012 with a scandal for each day of the year. It‘s full of sly humor which I so appreciate over corny stuff. No one should be shocked that Charlie Sheen shows up more than anyone else in this book with about 8 entries dedicated to him. 😆 Highly recommended for movie buffs and lovers of Old Hollywood. 5⭐️🍿🎥

Another good read from Hourly History! I really enjoy these short bios and there are so many of them to choose from. Naturally, my love for Old Hollywood has led me to read this 13-part series first.

Ingrid Bergman is one of THE Old Hollywood legends and it was fascinating to read about her early life, career and romantic choices. This is a great place for anyone to start that is not overly familiar with the details of her life. 4⭐️
