Wilkerson makes the devastating history of caste utterly clear. Combining the U.S. system with India and Nazi Germany history is brilliant. I was especially gobsmacked by some of her real-life examples, from the historical to the personal.

Just go get this and read it!

Bakingbookworm Do you think it would read well as an audiobook? 3y
Cinfhen Great review!! You‘ve inspired me to finally pick this up/ I think I‘ll use my #BOTM credit for this one 😁 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Bakingbookworm I do. But I also wanted to have text to refer to later ... 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen It‘s really worth the time! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great review, some of her examples were eye opening and devastating, especially for anyone how wants to claim there is no racism in America. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Post-racist claims are just ignorant ... and Wilkerson (among others) proves it. 3y

After taking a good look at my shelves, it turns out most of my #POCAuthor books are female written fantasies and....I'm ok with that

I loved this book. The premise of human beings literally embodying a city was both fascinating and quite brilliantly done. Jemisin is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors 💗

BarbaraTheBibliophage Amazing! I neeeed this ... 😎 4y
Kammbia1 I just started reading this one today. I'm finally reading a Jemisin novel but I love when fantasy novels tells stories set in a city. Charles de Lint has been known for that over the past 3 decades. I'm looking forward to see what Jemisin does with NYC in this novel. 4y

Such a powerful memoir!

Moore‘s unique story is honest and introspective, at times heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting. Beautifully written and narrated by the author, this audiobook gave me chills and made me cry.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Using this for #mandmchallenge2020 #POCauthor

March: Book Three | Andrew Aydin, John Lewis

A stunning conclusion to the March trilogy. This one covers the time period from the Birmingham church bombing to the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

These books are a gift, and I am grateful to John Lewis for sharing his memories and experiences. A difficult read at any time, even more so under the shadow of the Charlottesville Unite the Right White supremacist rally, rollbacks to the 🗳 Rights Act, and the current POTUS.🤮 #nonfiction2020

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes to all of that and excellent review! 4y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I was excited that this was the First-Year Book the last time I taught freshman composition--it's so useful for teaching rhetorical appeals and visual analysis! 4y

March: Book One | John Robert Lewis, Andrew Aydin, Nate Powell

The first volume of March goes backs and forth between the day of Barack Obama‘s inauguration in 2009, and John Lewis‘s childhood and early years in the civil rights movement.

It‘s an extraordinary memoir in graphic novel format, and sparked some excellent conversations with Maya this morning. I‘m looking forward to reading the next two.

Such an important piece of narrative history. The story of Cudjo Lewis one of the last African men who was brought over to America on a slave ship. His story was heartbreaking and his life after being “freed” was still fraught & painful. Despite his hardships Cudjo Lewis displayed such dignity & humanity. I HIGHLY suggest the audio as the narrator really captures the flavor of the dialect.

KT1432 I‘m glad I did the audio for this one too! 4y
rockpools I‘m looking forward to getting properly into this - sadly I think it‘ll have to be print though. 4y

Cinfhen I‘m sure it‘ll still be a very powerful read @RachelO 4y
TrishB I have this on my kindle 👍🏻 but have done two NF in the last week so I‘m definitely on a fiction binge for the rest of the month 😁 4y
Cinfhen Oops, forgot this also works for #OneWordTitle #ReadingWithMrBook @MrBook 4y
Megabooks Thanks for mentioning this one. It has gotten lost in the shuffle of my mind! 4y
Cinfhen It‘s super short @Megabooks but really worth your time!!! Listen to audio 4y
Cinfhen Yes, you‘ve fulfilled your NF quota @TrishB 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa This one has been on my to-read list for awhile now... I must push it up again. 4y
Cinfhen It‘s good @Riveted_Reader_Melissa so I was surprised to see a bunch of negative reviews on GoodReads 4y
MrBook Ooh, sounds like a great one!!! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Wait, this is a #memoir? I thought it was a #biography ... but it‘s your call. Or was it a #mystery? I‘m glad the audio was good pick. This could work for #finishinaday also, right? 4y
Cinfhen So technically it‘s a biography @BarbaraTheBibliophage BUT it‘s an actual transcript of Codju Lewis‘s words uninterrupted or edited so I took that to be a memoir , for this challenge at least😜 ZNH does give context to their meetings but she never interjects or steers the conversation. It‘s really fascinating and worth listening too. 4y
Cinfhen And yes, it‘s less than 3 1/2 hours on audio and the last 45 minutes is African fables @BarbaraTheBibliophage 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Interesting—it‘s a memoir wrapped in commentary / biography. Good call and glad you liked it! Moving it up my list! 4y
Cinfhen If you can listen to the audio I recommend going that route @BarbaraTheBibliophage 😊 4y
