The Hate U Give | Angela Thomas

Pickpick

This has been on my TBR for quite a while; admittedly, recent events bumped this up the list. The last couple of months, I‘ve been amazed at my own lack of awareness and perspective on the topics of #systemicracism & #policebrutality. Stories like this one serve a very important purpose to #educate people and highlight the corruption. While this story did not have the ultimate desired outcome, I have faith that a real change will come. It has to.

PurpleTulipGirl As sad as the resolution was, it felt more realistic than what I would have preferred. Which makes me sad. 4y
rethier1 @PurpleTulipGirl Absolutely 😔 Not many happy endings on this topic to-date. But as Starr said, “Yet I think it‘ll change one day. How? I don‘t know. When? I definitely don‘t know. Why? Because there will always be someone ready to fight.” #don‘tgiveup #speakup #demandchange #standtogether 🤎🤍🖤 4y

The History of the Hobbit | John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, John D. Rateliff

Loved this footnote....and still very relevant in our current time...a strong reminder of Elie Wiesel‘s Warning,

“We must take sides.
Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.
Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

True then and sadly still true today.

Speak: The Graphic Novel | Laurie Halse Anderson
post image

Got to meet Laurie Halse Anderson today at my local library. She was here to talk about her novel “Speak”, the new “Speak Graphic Novel” and a little about her own experiences. Such an amazing afternoon, I could listen to her talk all day. She was even kind enough to give me some book recs while signing my books. #speakup #endrapeculture

Pickpick

5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars. What would you do if your government decided to put a 100 word tracker on your wrist? In order to force women and girls into submission that‘s what the government did in this dystopian novel. This plot may sound far-fetched, but the message is timely. This book made me angry as the author intended. I am not a dystopian fan, but #vox was great. The ending was satisfying—this is a MUST READ! {82 words} #100words #jpbookreview

Jess7 *** I received an #arc of this book from the publisher via #netgalley in exchange for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. *** #voxbook #bookreview #review #dystopian #fiction #feminist #feminism #womensrights #speakup #advancedreaderscopy #goodreads #goodreadschallenge No. 45 (edited) 6y

minkyb I appreciate your review. I wanted to really love it but other than the premise (which terrifies me) it fell flat. In any case, I hope it does well. 6y

I was thinking about this very poem last night. I first saw it on a poster in my 11th grade English classroom. It has stuck with me ever since. #speakup #malala #inspiration

Difficult Women | Roxane Gay
post image

Day 17 | #FallIntoBooks - #DifficultWomen by #RoxaneGay | #TBR ?This book is "[f]or difficult women, who should be celebrated for their very nature." ????‍??? "All too often, representations of a woman's strength overlook the cost of that strength, where it rises from, and how it is called upon when needed most." - Roxane Gay ??#Feminism #Equality #WomensRights #StrongWomen #Speakup #ProudFeminist

heatherspoetlife I loved this book! 7y
Jess7 @StoredFeminism I've borrowed it from the library. I really liked parts of her book #BadFeminist but not all of it. What did you like most about this one? 7y
heatherspoetlife @Jess7 I liked that most of the protagonists were women that aren't usually the main characters of stories. They're the kind of troubled women that break the male protagonist or that the female protagonist is in competition with, or break the story for some cop or journalist. 7y
