The Power of Concentration | Theron Q. Dumont
post image

So I got my new Kindle colorsoft yesterday, and I am so excited because my old one was on its last legs. But I am too distressed over current events to be able to concentrate well enough to read. I am very frustrated. Do any of you have this problem if you get anxious, and do you have suggestions for how to calm down and concentrate on your books?

lil1inblue Sometimes, playing instrumental music in the background helps me focus. I also switch up what I'm reading, or I find more lighthearted and funny books. 1w
Aims42 I do some 4-7-8 breathes (in thru your nose for 4, hold for 7, exhale thru your mouth for 8). I second @lil1inblue suggestion of playing instrumental music, there are some great long play YouTube videos 👍 I‘ve been enjoying this one https://youtu.be/YTDqU4R07Zc 1w
Bookwormjillk For me it‘s usually finding a spot without distractions and forcing myself to read for 20 minutes without stopping. That‘s usually enough to remind my brain that I really do like reading more than doom scrolling. I‘ve definitely been struggling to focus this year. 1w

AnnCrystal 🫂 I watch fantasy movies, which somehow inspires me to read 📚💝. 1w
Amiable Like @Aims42 , deep breathing. And meditation. 1w
Jari-chan I started reading cozy books or romances, that take away the fears and the stress of reality at least for a short amount of time. Also, avoiding social media 🙁 1w
dabbe I listen to soothing rain or ocean sounds. You can find 10+ hour ones on youtube or any music app you're using. I also love the website https://asoftmurmur.com/, where you can create your own ambient mix. Then, if I'm really in a rut, reading my PEANUTS/MUTTS comics or any comics helps me unwind while still reading. https://www.gocomics.com/ is also a great comics website. 🩵💙🩵 1w
Eggbeater @lil1inblue @Aims42 @Bookwormjillk @AnnCrystal @Amiable @dabbe Thank you all so much for the suggestions. I really appreciate the support. It means a lot. 💕 1w
Eggbeater @Aims42 Thanks for the link! I've been enjoying the coffee shop bookstore music. Very comforting. 1w
Eggbeater @dabbe thanks for the links! Comic books never occurred to me! Rain sounds sound lovely. 1w
Aims42 @Eggbeater There has been a lot going on, reading these comments have given me ideas too!! 😊☺️ 1w

A good introduction to lateral thinking although few times we may have used it even without thinking specifically about it

I am a wild over-thinker which truly gets in the way of my daily life. Maybe that‘s why I found this book so helpful. I listened to it and found myself agreeing with almost everything the author explained. I do believe I will live a better & happier life if I apply his advice. I specially love the fact that he has a whole section with explicit practice exercises.

I had high hopes but this was lame, nothing new here and the kind of gobbledygook that makes people dislike self help books. Next!

KathyWheeler Too bad — the title made it sound promising. 11mo

This was dead in the middle of the road for me. 2.5 stars.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was really short and didn‘t go into as much detail as I would have liked, in places. The first half was strong and what I expected from the title. The first half supported his thesis. The second half did not; in fact, it sort of disproved it (at least for me). 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics About 1/2 to 2/3 through the book, Nguyen suddenly started referring to god A LOT and talked about “divine downloads.” This was very distracting to me. I get where he was going with the divine download thing, but it just came off weird. The god thing just unsettled me. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1y
GingerAntics There was also this random moment of diet advice that did not have any backing other than common practice as opposed to supportable science. It was out of place and just not needed. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1y
GingerAntics He used “nonthinking” instead of mindfulness or being present. It got really weird when he talking about nonthinking being the the same thing as a flow mental state. It was kind of weird and not exactly accurate, especially for someone who tends to go into mental flow when studying, doing research, and writing academic papers. 1y

Texreader As always thanks for an honest review! 1y
GingerAntics @Texreader I was just so hoping for something… different I guess. The first part was in line with what I was expecting, then all of a sudden it took this turn and it was very jarring. I mean, I have to give him credit for referring to god as her. Maybe it was me. 1y
