Death and Taxes | David Dodge

I‘ve seen a lot of misinformation about government employees on social media. One of the most ridiculous assertions is that government employees don‘t pay taxes. This is news to me! I‘ve been paying taxes on my wages since I started working in high school, through college, and as a #longtimefed for 35+ years. I still pay taxes on some of my retirement income. The same applies for teachers, firefighters, state workers, and other public servants.

Tamra 🤦🏽‍♀️ it‘s inexplicable. (edited) 2d
ImperfectCJ So many misconceptions. I spoke with a medical doctor yesterday who didn't know that the NIH was part of the federal government and didn't understand the link between cutting federal funding and colleges decreasing the number of science graduate students they could accept. I just...ugh. I don't mean to imply that I have a firm understanding about how everything works, but I feel pretty confident that I understand the basic structure. 2d
TieDyeDude That hurts my brain. Why would someone make up a lie like that, unless there is no practical reason for these fed lay-offs and supporters need to make up easily refutable stories to justify this administration's actions in their own minds... 🤔 😵 😔 2d

marleed I‘m retired fed civil service (38 years). I paid taxes then. I pay taxes now. And honestly, I‘m good with paying taxes to support roads, libraries, education, keeping SS solvent, healthcare, emergency response, military, peace keeping mission, altruistic endeavors and so much more. I don‘t want to pay the taxes of billionaires who have the accountants and the exception‘s to avoid their responsibility. 2d
marleed And another thing… In 2022-23 the average cost of educating one student was $17,650. I have 2 grown children who were in public schools k-13. Without adjusting for inflation, my taxes for those 13 years of education is $458,900. My taxes did not pay the direct education of my own kids. It went to the education of the US. Just stop it with private school vouchers. Our best natural resource is the education of our children. 2d
Susanita @marleed I don‘t think anyone “likes” paying taxes, but I definitely like what taxes pay for, nationally and locally. I like public land and schools and libraries and sidewalks and food testing and so much more. Vouchers are a scam. 2d
Susanita @TieDyeDude The more I think about it, the more absurd it seems to me. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2d

I enjoyed just how the author portrayed the Queen‘s humanity in this book. She was quite likable to me & had me rooting for her! It‘s 1957, & Queen Elizabeth, new at her royal role, suspects someone among her father‘s courtiers intends to sabotage her reign in public.2 bodies are discovered in Chelsea that are possibly linked to her monarchy. She asks an ex-code breaker to help her unravel the truth. #serieslove2025 #4

Bookwormjillk I didn‘t know there were more of these! Yay! 1mo
kspenmoll @Bookwormjillk I have #1 in my TBR but not the others, so I am reading out of order. I got this #4 thru Libby. There is a #5 being published this year. 1mo

Really enjoying this series. The first book was really good and this one was also. Looking forward to book three and hoping the series lasts because I‘m already attached.

Hey! Looks like all Agatha Christie books are $2 today- which ones would you recommend? I‘m not going to get all of them but want to try out maybe 2 or 3, as I‘ve never read anything by her🙂📖

Librarybelle My favorite is And Then There Were None, which is more on the thriller side of mysteries. But, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is good. Incidentally, a group of us are reading through Christie‘s mysteries and starting with the first one, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Discussion on January 26th. Everything‘s posted through #ChristiesCapers . 2mo
Cailey_Mac @Librarybelle oooo thank you! And omg really?! I might have to try to join- I love reading groups☺️ 2mo
Librarybelle I‘ll add you to the list! Jump in and out whenever you like. Some are reading each title, and others are reading when they can. 2mo

DGRachel I‘m going to add my vote for And Then There Were None. It‘s my absolute favorite of hers and one I reread frequently. 2mo
Cailey_Mac @Librarybelle yay thank you! I‘ll deff be in and out as I read slow, but it sounds fun! 2mo

This is the first Sparks & Bainbridge mystery that I‘ve read, so I was playing catch-up with the characters. That aside, it was a very enjoyable read. Set in postwar London, the titular characters are trying tie a new crime to an old series of robberies. The plot is pleasingly complicated, the history well drawn and the characters are interesting. The only bad news is that I now have a new back list to read, but I‘m looking forward to them.

Aims42 You‘re in for a treat reading the previous books, they‘re so fun! I love the banter between Gwen and Iris 😆 2mo
CaitlinR @Aims42 Thanks, looking forward to reading them! 2mo

The good news is this was a compelling and interesting story. It‘s 1922 in St. Louis, and the MC gets inadvertently involved in investigating the murder of a player for a local Negro League team. He finds out more than he expected about the racism and violence of the KKK and segregation. There‘s also a little personal crisis in his life.

The bad news is I can‘t find the next installment. Not insurmountable but inconvenient.

Book 3 of the Saffron Everleigh series, my third & final #Roll100 book for December & probably my last finished book of 2024 since it‘s 10:30 PM. I struggled a bit with this one & all the characters, but I really enjoy Saffron, her roommate & her colleague/love interest. The science & the 1920s London setting are great too. I find I really enjoy historical mysteries, ⬇️

DebinHawaii … & I‘ll keep reading this one. 2mo
