The Story Girl | Lucy Maud Montgomery

Pickpick

I finished this one yesterday in a big gulp, after being true to my chapter-a-day for most of the month haha I hadn't read this one in probably 15 years so it was lovely to visit these characters again. A fun little story about a group of cousins/siblings/neighbors. I can remember always wishing I had an amazing orchard with such a rich family history. Looking forward to discussing this one for January's #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead !!

TheSpineView Excellant! 2y
Clwojick Great job! ❤️ 2y
BarbaraJean There‘s that beautiful vintage edition! 😊 Looking forward to discussing this one tomorrow! 2y

The Old Man & the Sea | Ernest Hemingway

Pickpick

Somehow I've never read this classic, despite it being short and despite it being on my shelves for over a decade, since my husband owned this copy when we got married haha I'm not sure how Hemingway managed to make me completely engrossed in a story about an old man catching a fish, but he did - I could barely put this one down! The ending did make me rather mad, though, but most classics do haha

OutAndAbout I read this in high school and only remember it as boring. Sounds like it might be worth a reread? 2y
PuddleJumper That's great! 2y

TheAromaofBooks @OutAndAbout - I can definitely see this as a book that I wouldn't have appreciated in high school, because it is, objectively, rather boring haha But as an adult I was a lot more interested in the Old Man's struggles, contemplations on aging and loneliness, and the Boy's genuine love and compassion for the Old Man. I think some authors just can't be truly appreciated by teens, and Hemingway may be one of them. 2y
OutAndAbout @TheAromaofBooks sold. It‘s going on this years TBR. 2y
Roary47 This was always my favorite story in school. We read it two different times. I‘m glad you had the opportunity to check it off. 💛 2y
Clwojick A old favourite! ❤️ 2y

The Fire: A Novel | Katherine Neville

Mehso-so

Even though I really enjoyed The Eight, The Fire just didn't completely work for me. From the beginning, Xie (the MC) is just so passive as a character - things happen TO her for the entire book, but she never seems to make a move on her own. The historical storyline, which worked so well in the first book, was incredibly lackluster here, to the point of feeling like filler. I'm still honestly not completely sure what the point of it was. ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I'm not sure how many times in one book an author should be allowed to have the characters realize that their conversation is being bugged, but it felt like it happened constantly in this book. In the end, it wasn't a bad concept, and there were some parts of this that worked, but where The Eight's complications and interconnectedness felt natural, in The Fire it felt forced, with everyone constantly explaining to other people what ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) was going on. While I can see myself rereading The Eight, I don't see myself picking this one up again.

TheSpineView Fantastic! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle - There were so many good elements here, I just didn't feel like they quite came together! 2y
IndoorDame It‘s been years since I‘ve read it and my memory of this one is fuzzy on the details, but I was left with similar feelings 2y
hissingpotatoes My review for this book was very similar! Especially since I liked The Eight so much. It felt like the main character was punted from plot point to plot point instead of being active, just like you said. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @IndoorDame @hissingpotatoes - It was weird because I actually really liked the MC, and it was fun to see what had happened to many of the characters from The Eight, but I just felt like the entire book was her being confused and getting dragged off somewhere else by the next person 😂 2y
ferskner That's a bummer! The Eight is one of my favorite books. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - There were a lot of great elements here, they just didn't come together for me. But I still think it's worth trying if you enjoyed the first book. And if you start it but then decide to DNF, it's worth skipping to the end to see how everyone's lives turn out haha 2y

Pickpick

The beginning of this book was slow, but once the characters really started to form relationships, it got much better. I thought the interview format really worked to convey everyone's feelings for each other. The emotional connections between all of the characters were intense, in a good way. I enjoyed the portrayal of addiction, and the focus on the emotional loss to the characters bc of their addictions. 4 ⭐

rjsthumbelina I read this for the #charms prompt for #OWLSmagicalreadathon. (Book with a white cover) 4y

I may have gone a little overboard during a sale on the #Etsy shop Discounts For Lovely; many of these are destined for specific projects. This was also not the extent of my Etsy purchases, just the first to arrive. #jewelrymaking #charms
