I picked this up months ago for #ReadingAfrica22 but somehow I didn‘t get around to listening until now. It‘s FANTASTIC!!! What a gripping medical story - the trajectory of the 2014 Ebola virus outbreak in Western Africa. I‘ve already read books for the three main countries #Guinea #SierraLeone and #Liberia - it also covers #DRCongo. With the knowledge we now have about Covid-19 this book is truly fascinating🤓

He started close to the river‘s source (the actual source being too small for his canoe) in northern #Zambia and traveled through the #DemocraticRepublicofCongo to the Atlantic Ocean. I learned so much about both countries. Almost everyone told him he‘d die, especially given the violence in the DR Congo. Sometimes it felt ⬇️
I just finished the tagged book for #Zambia #readingAfrica2022 but before I review the book I felt compelled to share my malachite elephants (and a bear behind them) I inherited from my mother-in-law. The family bought malachite beauties when they lived in Zambia and during their African travels. Among the pieces, these seemed most appropriate to post for Zambia. I love them so much for their beauty and family history.

pickWhile visiting her mother‘s bonobo rescue center, the main character Sophie & the bonobo Otto she rescued herself become a victim of a violent civil war in #DRCongo. She grows up quickly to escape death and to protect her bonobo. This feels overwhelmingly like a dystopian YA novel; it is not for the weak at heart. Sophie, soon to be a high school freshman, is immature, impulsive, and emotional. It was hard to sympathize with her for much of ⬇️

Phil Harwood sets out in a lone canoe to travel the Congo River starting in #Zambia and ending in #Angola 🛶Along the way there‘s 🐍🦟🦛🐊🕷to contend with as well as 🐲(cannibals)!!!
