Chalk Man | C J Tudor
post image
Pickpick

I was drawn to Chalk Man because it immediately made me think of Slenderman. The story focuses on a boy named Eddie who lives in an #englishhouse in England-duh. Young Eddie experiences some mysterious deaths and as he gets older he and his childhood friends try to figure out wtf really happened. It was a creepy (and fun!) read and reminded me a lot of the show Stranger Things! #aprella

emilyhaldi Omg slender man freaks me the f*%k out!!! 😱😱😱 6y

The Passing Bells | Phillip Rock

#Aprella #EnglishHouse ? #ReadingResolutions #foreigncountry

"Before there was Downton Abbey, there was Abingdon Pryory..." This trilogy follows the Greville family & their household staff who reside at their English country estate, Abingdon Pryory, from the Great War, through the jazz age and into WWII. These books came out in the 70s & 80s but were reissued with Downton Abbey's massive success & the interest in British sweeping family sagas.

emilyhaldi I still need to watch Downtown Abbey 😬 so maybe when I do it I will read this trilogy!! Sounds great 👍🏻 6y
Dragon I read Passing Bells years ago , I didn‘t realize it was part of a trilogy. 👍🐉 6y
Cinfhen 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y

The White Cottage Mystery | Margery Allingham

Here‘s one from the TBR with a pretty #EnglishHouse cover. I‘ve never read any Allingham before but she‘s one of the greats from the Golden Age of mysteries.

#Aprella

Jerusalem | Alan Moore
post image

The Boroughs in Northhampton provides the backdrop for the epic Jerusalem. This Oikos is an #englishhouse which remains true to Moore's heritage and literary style. Could do with being hacked away at to make a more succinct, sharply formed novel but in spite of these flaws it's an unforgettable read - for all the right reasons!

CindyMyLifeIsLit What a lovely edition! I started this awhile back, but stopped when I realized what a complex work it is. I didn‘t have time at that point to give it the attention it deserves. Hopefully I can tackle it this summer. I absolutely loved what I read, but it needs to be read slowly and closely to get the full experience. 6y
minkyb Totally @Cinfhen 📚📚📚📚📚5 stack alert! 6y

Country House Servant | Pamela Sambrook
post image

#englishhouse #aprella I have never read this straight through, but have often read sections when reading novels of English houses or watching Downton Abbey. An incredible amount of work goes into running a large home, some things covered in this book includes a summary of a housemaids timetable ,1926, & tables of how much washing was done monthly and annually.Lady Grenville called her footman a “lazy flunkey” cuz he complained about drawing👇

Leftcoastzen 40 baths twice daily. 6y
Cinfhen Oh wow!!! Another tag for @LeahBergen this one looks fascinating #stacked 6y

The Little Stranger | Sarah Waters
post image

A supernatural story set in rural Warwickshire in a dilapidated #englishhouse. Sarah Waters can do no wrong for me ❤️ #aprella

AmyG This book was such a good one. It‘s a slow read but you felt as if you were there....you got such a feeling of the old house, the people, the atmosphere. 6y
Cathythoughts Looks good 👍🏻 6y

Mdargusch I need to try this author then @youneverarrived 👍🏼 is this your favorite by her? 6y
youneverarrived @AmyG 100% agree. It‘s got me wanting to read it again looking at it! 6y
youneverarrived @Cinfhen ha I‘ve heard a few people say they don‘t get along with her. 6y
youneverarrived @batsy it‘s a good ‘un. Bit different to her others but really suspenseful. 6y
youneverarrived @Mdargusch I prefer Tipping the Velvet & Fingersmith. The Paying Guests is my least fave. 6y
AmyG @Cinfhen I could see why people would not “get into” her books. Not blasphemous at all. 6y
emilyhaldi Love her ❤️ 6y
Reviewsbylola Ooooh, great pick! 6y
Reviewsbylola She is hit or miss for me @cinfhen I didn‘t care for this one but loved Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet. The Paying Guests wasn‘t a favorite either. 6y

The Lake House | Kate Morton
post image

#Aprella #day12 #EnglishHouse After a really bad case,Detective Sadie Sparrow is taking a break at her grandfathers Cornwall cottage when she comes across a crumbling English House on a lake with an overgrown garden.Curious, she learns it was abandoned after the disappearance of a baby boy in the 1930s.Now an old lady, the owner,Alice Edevane, the boys sister, writes Detective novels & tries to forget the past. Until Sadie starts asking questions.

emilyhaldi Nice blurb, I'm officially intrigued!! 👍🏻 6y
Cinfhen I almost went with a different Kate Morton but I wasn‘t sure if a “Farm House” would work for #EnglishHouse 6y
asiriusreader I really liked this Kate Morton! 👏🏻 6y
