I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it.

Death and Taxes | David Dodge

I‘ve seen a lot of misinformation about government employees on social media. One of the most ridiculous assertions is that government employees don‘t pay taxes. This is news to me! I‘ve been paying taxes on my wages since I started working in high school, through college, and as a #longtimefed for 35+ years. I still pay taxes on some of my retirement income. The same applies for teachers, firefighters, state workers, and other public servants.

Tamra 🤦🏽‍♀️ it‘s inexplicable. (edited) 3w
ImperfectCJ So many misconceptions. I spoke with a medical doctor yesterday who didn't know that the NIH was part of the federal government and didn't understand the link between cutting federal funding and colleges decreasing the number of science graduate students they could accept. I just...ugh. I don't mean to imply that I have a firm understanding about how everything works, but I feel pretty confident that I understand the basic structure. 3w
TieDyeDude That hurts my brain. Why would someone make up a lie like that, unless there is no practical reason for these fed lay-offs and supporters need to make up easily refutable stories to justify this administration's actions in their own minds... 🤔 😵 😔 3w

marleed I‘m retired fed civil service (38 years). I paid taxes then. I pay taxes now. And honestly, I‘m good with paying taxes to support roads, libraries, education, keeping SS solvent, healthcare, emergency response, military, peace keeping mission, altruistic endeavors and so much more. I don‘t want to pay the taxes of billionaires who have the accountants and the exception‘s to avoid their responsibility. 3w
marleed And another thing… In 2022-23 the average cost of educating one student was $17,650. I have 2 grown children who were in public schools k-13. Without adjusting for inflation, my taxes for those 13 years of education is $458,900. My taxes did not pay the direct education of my own kids. It went to the education of the US. Just stop it with private school vouchers. Our best natural resource is the education of our children. 3w
Susanita @marleed I don‘t think anyone “likes” paying taxes, but I definitely like what taxes pay for, nationally and locally. I like public land and schools and libraries and sidewalks and food testing and so much more. Vouchers are a scam. 3w
Susanita @TieDyeDude The more I think about it, the more absurd it seems to me. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3w

At one point as a #longtimefed I was pretty familiar with the Miami airport, whether as the destination or a transit point. I also spent a long day at the airport greeting arriving participants and getting them onto the right shuttle bus. For another conference, my room overlooked the main runway.

Anyway, in addition to the sandwiches from La Careta, I also like the artwork on the walls.

TheBookHippie I liked it too. Been years since I‘ve flown in there! 3w

A whopping 14/100! 🤣 Some of those posters were 😱!
Faves:
THE THIN MAN: [Nora Charles]: “Waiter, will you serve the nuts? I mean, will you serve the guests the nuts?“
DARK VICTORY: “Nothing can hurt us now. What we have can't be destroyed. That's our victory - our victory over the dark. It is a victory because we're not afraid.“
WUTHERING HEIGHTS: “I am Heathcliff!“ (I laugh at this one now).

Mollyanna I need to watch Dark Victory it‘s been on my to watch list for a long time. 4w
dabbe @Mollyanna It's so worth it. Have hankies nearby, though! 🩶💚🩶 4w

Book 1 of the series. I‘d read some of the later ones, so it was interesting to go back to where it all started. #serieslove2025

Pickpick

My first read of 2025! I love the Powell/Loy movies, and I think the first film does an excellent job at adapting this book. If you are not familiar with the title, this is a well done detective novel with fun, sassy characters and an intriguing mystery. But if you've seen the movie, it doesn't really offer much additional story or insight. Still, since it has been a while since I've watched the movie, I had a blast revisiting Nick and Nora.

The Big Sleep | Raymond Chandler

Two thumbs down. I've never read Chandler, so I didn't realize I would have to muddle through blatant misogyny. The hostility with which he writes about his female characters is nauseating. And don't give me the "he's a product of his time" garbage. I've read plenty of literature from the time that doesn't normalize slapping women around and make every female character insipid and ridiculous. It's gross.

Susanita I picked up either this or The Long Goodbye (can‘t remember which) because it was a “classic.” Barely finished one chapter before bailing on it in frustration. 3mo
Angeles I tried to read the Maltese Falcon and had to bail for similar reasons. 3mo
Bookwomble Chandler, and so Marlow, got more misogynistic as he got older, drunker and more depressed. He's certainly a flawed writer, but I still find his writing engaging. 3mo

@chaoticmissadventures #333challenge

Auto-buy: V.E. Schwab, Patrick deWitt, P. Djèlí Clark

Read More: Adrian Tchaikovsky, Walter Mosley, Percival Everett

First Time: Malcolm Gladwell, Kurt Vonnegut, Brom

ChaoticMissAdventures Kurt Vonnegut is one of my all time favorites I even got So It Goes tattooed on myself! These are great lists! I do recommend listening to the podcast If Books Could Kill episode about Outliers before reading Gladwell, it turns out not everything he writes is on the up and up. 📚 3mo
TieDyeDude Thanks for the recommendation, @chaoticmissadventures I got “Blink“ at our book club book swap, otherwise Gladwell might not have made this list :-)
I saw an article that argued the movie of Breakfast of Champions starring Bruce Willis is misunderstood and underrated. Then I went down a rabbit hole reading about Vonnegut, who I've never really gave much thought to.
