I feel almost a bit of a letdown with this one - I adore Emily Dickinson‘s poetry, and I had hoped there would be more interaction between her and Margaret. Instead, while overall an interesting story, I felt the narrative bogged down in the middle of the book. Sometimes I had a hard time following Margaret‘s thoughts and her speech patterns, and I would have to reread a few sentences to better understand. #LiteraryCrew

I really liked the strong female relationships in this one. The writing was also beautiful and created a real sense of the place. I found all the different points of view. Bit frustrating and am not convinced they came together to tell a better story than if we had kept with just one or two narrators. I don‘t know if I even have words to describe this one. It sickened me, broke my heart, and is generally overall hopeless. Arsim is one of the most unredeemable characters I‘ve ever read. The story of how he meets, falls in love, and cares for Milos starts so promising. But he is married, has a child on the way, and is Albanian and Milos is a Serb. The war will tear them apart, but they do that on their own. Homophobia, war, ⬇️⬇️

12/23 I‘m glad I finally got around to reading this book. I read it at the same time as The Familiars by Stacey Halls and It really made me think about that fact that all through the ages women have had to use whatever they have at their disposal to get what they want and need. I guessed the twist immediately, but that didn‘t really matter, that wasn‘t the point. Well written and engrossing. Worth a read. #booked23 #setintwoormoretimeperiods

Stumbled across this. I remember it was supposed to be a duology and now we have book FOUR!?

On the surface, this Book Club choice appeared to be “my kind of book”. Then why did I dread picking it up and so thankful that I finally finished it? Not sure. It did pick up towards the end. I was very happy to realize that I could use it for #booked2023 #setintwoormoretimeperiods. Emma in 2021, Beth in 1944 and Venetia in 1907 are united through a beautiful English garden at Highbury House.
