I feel almost a bit of a letdown with this one - I adore Emily Dickinson‘s poetry, and I had hoped there would be more interaction between her and Margaret. Instead, while overall an interesting story, I felt the narrative bogged down in the middle of the book. Sometimes I had a hard time following Margaret‘s thoughts and her speech patterns, and I would have to reread a few sentences to better understand. #LiteraryCrew

LeeRHarry That‘s a shame it wasn‘t a hit. Hopefully your next read will be!😊 2y

Librarybelle Thanks, @LeeRHarry ! I hope so too! 2y
squirrelbrain Sounds good on paper, but at least it fulfilled a prompt! 🤷‍♀️ 2y

I really liked the strong female relationships in this one. The writing was also beautiful and created a real sense of the place. I found all the different points of view. Bit frustrating and am not convinced they came together to tell a better story than if we had kept with just one or two narrators. Still a good solid read and claiming fro #booked2023 #setintwoormoretimeperiods it‘s also going to be my US for #readingtheamericas

Bolla: A Novel | Pajtim Statovci

I don‘t know if I even have words to describe this one. It sickened me, broke my heart, and is generally overall hopeless. Arsim is one of the most unredeemable characters I‘ve ever read. The story of how he meets, falls in love, and cares for Milos starts so promising. But he is married, has a child on the way, and is Albanian and Milos is a Serb. The war will tear them apart, but they do that on their own. Homophobia, war, ⬇️⬇️

LaraReads and self-loathing lay ahead. The story is intertwined with the Albanian folklore of the Bolla, a demonic serpentine dragon who is only free to roam the world one day a year, when it will devour anyone in its path. And it is what these two men become. 2y
LaraReads Arsim in the way that he destroys anyone and everyone who has ever cared for him, and Milos in the way that Arsim and his war experiences break his soul and lock him away in his own mind. It is a devastating story that breaks everything in me. 2y

LeeRHarry I read this one last year - ultimately the sick feeling I had throughout made me struggle to finish it. 2y
LaraReads @LeeRHarry it was a complete struggle! I alternated listening & reading, and the narrator for Milos broke my heart. The narrator for Arsim made me want to throw up. 2y
LaraReads @LeeRHarry I stuck with it for the importance of a book that talks about how homophobia and war destroy so much, but it was very tough. 2y
Librarybelle Great review! 2y

12/23 I‘m glad I finally got around to reading this book. I read it at the same time as The Familiars by Stacey Halls and It really made me think about that fact that all through the ages women have had to use whatever they have at their disposal to get what they want and need. I guessed the twist immediately, but that didn‘t really matter, that wasn‘t the point. Well written and engrossing. Worth a read. #booked23 #setintwoormoretimeperiods

Cinfhen Evelyn is a great read but The Familiars sounds fascinating 2y

Stumbled across this. I remember it was supposed to be a duology and now we have book FOUR!?

Might be able to use this for #GasLampFantasy or #SetInTwoOrMoreTimePeriods of the #Booked2023 challenge.

@alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen

Also, #SeriesLove2023 and definitely #20in4 #readathon this weekend.

Andrew65 Amazing how some series expand, like the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy in five parts 😂 2y

On the surface, this Book Club choice appeared to be “my kind of book”. Then why did I dread picking it up and so thankful that I finally finished it? Not sure. It did pick up towards the end. I was very happy to realize that I could use it for #booked2023 #setintwoormoretimeperiods. Emma in 2021, Beth in 1944 and Venetia in 1907 are united through a beautiful English garden at Highbury House.

Cinfhen It does sound like a lovely read…glad you persevered but sorry it wasn‘t great 2y
DivineDiana @Cinfhen I wish I had finished before the Book Club meeting! The discussion always gives me a new outlook! ❤️ 2y
