Very in character for me to read a Sleeping Beauty reimagining - the theme for February‘s #fairytalereadingchallenge at the end of March… it kept me company on the train from Canberra to Sydney. I love Alix E. Harrow and this was enjoyable BUT calling girls who love Cinderella best vanilla right at the start. Ouch! The Disney version features the art and colour palette of Mary Blair AND Gus Gus! 😐

tpixie I agree - she was a little judgy judgy! Fun read though Sleeping Beauty returns in 2w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @tpixie, especially since she gave the romantic girls Beauty & the Beast 🤔 like ok? I am slowly working my way through her backlist - so I‘ll get to Mirror Mended, eventually! (edited) 2w

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @tpixie, I haven‘t read that one yet - even though the paperback is sitting patiently on my bookshelf 🫣 my favourite so far 2w
tpixie @thegirlwiththelibrarybag that‘s great also! I really enjoyed her novels. The Novelas were OK, but the novels were great. 2w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @tpixie, I‘ve really enjoyed her short stories too - she has a new one out (an Amazon exclusive unfortunately) the knight and the butcherbird. 2w
tpixie @thegirlwiththelibrarybag oh! Thanks! I‘ll look for it. 2w

Vanilla! Those are fighting words!!!

OrangeMooseReads 😄 they are indeed fightin words! Cinderella is anything but vanilla 2w
lil1inblue 😂 I think I take issue with all of the descriptions. 😂 2w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @lil1inblue, fair! (In the main characters defence, she is a dying girl so she does relate to sleeping beauty) 2w
Centique I always preferred Sleeping Beauty. Maleficient! Merryweather and Flora and Fauna! But then again the mice in Cinderella were awesome too 😍 1w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Centique, both movies had concept art by Mary Blair (you can tell by the bold colour palette) so both top tier in my book! Gus Gus does have my whole heart tho! 1w

Sace Might I recommend a Wizard‘s Guide to Defensive Baking? 2w
MaleficentBookDragon @Sace oh that sounds fun! 2w
Sace It is a good one. I‘ve read it twice! I have Minor Mage on my TBR as well. 2w
Sace Oh! And Bryony and Roses is one I read for #LMPBC years and years ago. It was a good read as well. 2w

I will only say the ending was a touch anticlimactic but otherwise it was a good read. Very creative and enjoyable I liked this take on the sleeping beauty story. First book I've finished in a while, I feel proud of myself even if it was just a novella.

I felt their children and grandchildren, eager to meet me and see if I was as interesting as their parents had said.
And I felt my Yashaa, bearded and wrinkled, when he pressed his lips to mine.

I thought this was a fun and unique spin on how the story of Sleeping Beauty came about. It did have a bit of a slow start but it definitely picked up. I would give it 3 stars.

4.5 ⭐ You know that feeling when you have waited too long to read a really good book. I‘m living that now. I‘ve had Thornhedge since it came out and I already know I love T. Kingfisher. But no, I waited on this. The story that this woman can put in 111 pages. It‘s sweet, it‘s uplifting, it‘s happy, it‘s fascinating. Let the adjectives continue. This is a sleeping beauty retelling that imagines a different villain and a different reason

LibrarianRyan for beauty to sleep. It dares to say that beauty can be ugly, and commonness can be beautiful. It weaves a story we know into a culture we don‘t to produce a story that will want to be read repeatedly. 2mo
TracyReadsBooks Loved this book! So good!!! 2mo

A short novella. I liked the concept but I wish it would have been a full novel with more character development and world building. A little heavy with themes of sexual assault so be warned before you begin. I loved the feminist themes but it just didn‘t land for me as a great retelling of a Sleeping Beauty story.

A fantastic retelling of Sleeping Beauty. A reverse where the princess is evil and the fairy is good. I love T. Kingfisher‘s books and this novella didn‘t disappoint.

Book 8/100 of the year.

LibrarianRyan I just finished this this week. I loved it! 2mo
BooksNBowls I read this in December. TK never misses with me. ❤️ 2mo
Graciouswarriorprincess @LibrarianRyan @BooksNBowls I love her books. She is a local author for me and occasionally drops into my local BN store and randomly signs the books. 2mo
