So I‘m sitting at the library trying to read and take my mind off of things while I wait for my car to finish in the shop but it‘s hard. Last night we found out that my cousin I excepted passed away. It‘s times like this that it‘s really hard living far away from family.

This one was just okay. I found myself not really caring about any of the many characters. It was difficult to keep up with which mom was which/who did what, and the idea of a mommy group gives me anxiety. Back stories of some of the characters came up, but I didn't find myself really caring 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Jenni_Capps Reading this now and feeling the same way. #struggling should I bail?! 6y
Erinreadsthebooks @Jenni_Capps I don't feel like I wasted my time reading it, but it was just kind of flat all the way through. If you're close to finished, maybe keep going? If it had been difficult to read, I would've bailed for sure. 6y

🎧❤️Did anyone feel surprised that the author of the Lunar Chronicles wrote this? I thought the Lunar Chronicles were brilliant, fast paced, and well crafted plots. This is a thin plot, weak whiny heroine, and basically the only thing going for it is the descriptions of the baked goods.. 😐
•Am I the only person who is bummed reading this one?

Samwise_Gamgee I felt the same! I was disappointed. 7y
BookMusings Good to know! 7y
Jess_Read_This @Samwise_Gamgee @BookMusings I bailed on the audiobook today. I have a print copy my mom gave me from her Owlcrate so I might skim and get to the ending. ?That counts as a "read" right? I gave it halfway through on audio and reached the point of "No more" 7y
litmuggle I started it and dropped it very early on because all they did was talked about baking. I do plan on giving it another try though. 7y
Jess_Read_This @litmuggle I got halfway through and realized there was no real story happening! Such an odd set up. Maybe she should have written a baking book. 7y

I have never, in my life, wished so desperately for two people NOT to copulate. Perhaps this book should have been called "The Whiny Kidnapper and His Manic Pixie". #struggling #sodangedunhealthy

Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale | William Shakespeare

Mehso-so

"A poem on the page is half the experience" - Kate Tempest, possibly.

Me reading Shakespeare is considerably less than half the experience. I need a theatre director and some wonderful actors to translate for me.

I haven't read any Shakespeare since school (& that was an ordeal), so wanted to give it a go. However, neat script isn't the thing. Officially letting myself off the reading hook - theatre or film is the way to go. #struggling!

DeborahSmall You should try the Hogarth Shakespeare re tellings. I just read Hag-Seed by Margaret Atwood, her take on The Tempest and Jeanette Winterson has retold The Winters Tale in The Gap of Time it looks very good 👍🏼 7y
rockpools @DeborahSmall Oh! Thank you. I'd seen Hag-Seed, but had no idea it was part of a series. Maybe that'd be a better way in - thanks! 7y
cathysaid I confess. 😔 I have an MA in English and I've taught for over 17 years...but I have always and will forevermore HATE Shakespeare. Detest reading his plays, don't like seeing them performed live. It's my dirty little secret. 😏 (edited) 7y

rockpools @cathysaid 🙌🏼Drinks on me! 🍷That makes me feel loads better & I promise not to tell anyone! I'm not done yet - I still feel like I just don't get it enough to 'get' it, but it's good to know I'm not being a total muppet! 7y
GlitteryOtters FYI, i actually love reading Shakespeare, but have had horrible experiences trying to read A Winter's Tale. Something about that play seems to really require a stage and actors. Some plays just seem to be like that! 7y
rockpools @GlitteryOtters Hmm. That's interesting. Any recommendations for easier-to-handle plays, next time I'm feeling determined enough to try again? 7y
GlitteryOtters @RachelO Othello, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet were all easier, IMHO. Also, try out different versions. I really liked the Folger editions with explanatory footnotes on each page to give context & explanation where needed, and usually recommend people at least poke through and see if that is their style. If not, look at other editions, see what works best for you. Good luck if/when you venture down that path again! 7y
rockpools Thank you. Footnotes would've been good - it was a spur-of-the-moment serial reader read, which probably didn't help. Next time- planning! 7y
Petrichor74 I firmly believe that reading Shakespeare's plays is the wrong thing to do. They are often confusing, and can be a huge turn-off, which leads people to dislike Shakespeare. They were written as plays, and should be treated as such. Watch them! Read them if you want, but watching the plays is better. The poems are wonderful though...❤️ 6y
