Robotswithpersonality
Batgirl: Year One | Chuck Dixon, Scott Beatty
post image
Pickpick

Oh yes. I love the vintage feel, the sense of going back to Batgirl's orgins now, in a way that obviously plays off lore that has developed over the years, e.g. the Oracle/Cassandra references, the hint of something with Dick, the ominous whisper in references to the Joker.
The writers and artists did a great job of presenting a recognizable character with a bit more youthful hubris and pep, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? contrasted by a more dour, demanding figure in the Batman, and a truly creepy villain in the arsonist/murderer Firefly. Killer Moth continues to flabbergast me by his unique brand of clueless chutzpah and the fact he has yet to expire though his own foolishness.
I enjoyed the balance between depicting a young woman frustrated by the limiting requirements of ideal career fields, a repeated pattern of men telling her she literally didn't
3d
Robotswithpersonality 3/? measure up, showcased alongside a forthrightness in all things - if the young men around her are going to vague flirt, she's stating clearly 'ask me out or go away'. She's also clear with Robin when he needs to back off with the more-than-just-flirting.
Back to the vintage style I mentioned, there's some dated terms that Babara is using to refer to Black Canary, bad she is consistently acknowledging when her efforts are overshadowed by more
3d
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 established heroes in the mix, but I'll take the positive that she's her own advocate, similar to incapacitating the purse snatcher, it's still nice to see proto-feminist messaging especially if the comic feels like it might be marketed to a younger audience. 🤷🏼‍♂️ (edited) 3d

My Hero Academia, Vol. 1 | Kohei Horikoshi
Mehso-so

In comparison to other manga series I read, this one feels more “serious” (it has fewer funny moments and the characters are competing against each other), and that was hard to get into. Also the art felt dark and hard to follow, and there weren‘t enough female characters.

50/100 The first of a series, where corporations have their own superheroes, and make contracts to protect people and property. It doesn't really work as a superhero story, but as a work place comedy, it's actually pretty funny. Andrea starts as a fish out of water, but quickly comes to be invaluable to C.U.P. I don't know if I'll listen to more of the series, but I enjoyed this one. 3.75/5 ⭐ #Read2025 #SeriesLove2025

I really enjoyed this series, more so than a lot of older comics I've read recently. Batman is settling into his role in Gotham when a villain known as the Reaper starts to terrorize the city. A vigilante from the past, the Reaper's return rattles Batman, as he is a violent, murderous reflection of our dark knight. Batman has to reconcile with his own self-imposed limits while also confronting Joe Chill in a fascinating side story.

TieDyeDude Some excellent art from the legendary Todd McFarlane. Also, always a sign of a good story when Dr. Leslie Tompkins is involved, IMO. 3w

Batman's Killing Time is an obnoxiously consistent non-linear story that could have easily been a masterpiece. I ended up DNF'ing this one around the 65% mark. Tom King is a fantastic creator. I highly recommend both The Human Target & Rorschach. There were elements of this I liked quite a bit, however the elements that did not work were too big of distractions.

As the title says the events of this are a bit like origin stories for Nite Owl/Dr Manhattan. Nite Owl is a bit of a poor man's Batman. What is interesting in this volume is how he grows as a character with his interactions with Rorschach & others. The second half of this was absolutely fantastic, easily one of the best graphic novels I have read this year. Dealing with quantum realities, pocket universes, etc. There are times where you (CONT)

vivastory have to turn the book sideways/upside down (House of Leave style-minus the pages of footnotes). This was an immensely satisfying origin story on Dr. Manhattan. 3w
RamsFan1963 I've read the Before Watchman volume with The Comedian and Rorschach, I need to get around to reading the rest of them. 3w
vivastory @RamsFan1963 If you haven't read it, Tom King:s Rorschach is fantastic 3w

RamsFan1963 @vivastory I've seen it at the library, but I haven't read it yet. Is it the original Rorschach or the replacement introduced in Doomsday Clock? 3w
vivastory @RamsFan1963 I haven't read Doomsday Clock but it's definitely not the original 3w
RamsFan1963 @vivastory I wouldn't waste my time on Doomsday Clock. It was a good idea, and could have been an interesting sequel to Watchmen, but DC blew it. There was big delays between issues, then events were happening in other DC comics that affected the plot of the miniseries. The only good thing about it was the artwork by Gary Frank. 3w

Thanks go to Panda Redd for making me aware of this one's existence. Sure it's dark, sad and gorey, but it's also a rollicking bop though classic literature, (the Little Women kick Deadpool's ass: I appreciate this) and the recognition that a) The comic book characters we know best have some powerful antecedents b) stories matter 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 c) a violent jaunt in graphic novel form doesn't necessarily do anyone any harm, as long as it's not what the entire comic book industry is reduced to. 1mo
