This book did not work for me. I know that with Oyeyemi, you just have to let the writing wash over you, and there will be times you have no idea what is "happening" in the plot. This novel was true to form in that regard. I found the use of Shakespearen and Mythical names heavy-handed. I still enjoy her writing, but this novel was a miss. 2 ?

Not my kind of book. A man is in search of his origins and we follow him along his journey. The book touches upon themes as colonization and race but mostly it‘s about the people he meets. Not for me.

Cinfhen Gorgeous photo! So sorry the book was a pan! Should I even bother?!?? 2y
sarahbarnes Ugh, bummer. Echoing @cinfhen - should I bother to try it? 2y

AnneCecilie Sorry about the book, but I love the picture of Versailles 2y
squirrelbrain That‘s a shame but loving your pic! ❤️ 🇫🇷 2y
BookwormM Still waiting for my library hold bet it doesn‘t arrive before the winner is announced 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @sarahbarnes I‘m not sure. It is well written but I just don‘t like stories about people on a journey, meeting new people and insights in every chapter, just to move on in the next one. 2y
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie @squirrelbrain Thank you, it‘s a beautiful place. Work though, so it was an efficient & short visit! 2y
BarbaraBB @BookwormM It‘s not as good as Still Born! 2y
Cinfhen I hear that! I don‘t think I‘d enjoy the experience either. I might read it later on but for now I‘m passing on Gospel. 2y
Librarybelle Beautiful pic! 2y
sarahbarnes Hmmm. Thanks for your thoughts on this one. I‘ll see if I feel motivated to try it before it‘s due back at the library. 2y
TheKidUpstairs I bailed about half way through, seeing your review helps confirm I made the right choice! I thought there were moments of such beautiful, brilliant writing, but just not enough meat to the book. It was ostensibly about Pascal, but he was just such a blank space of a person, there was nothing to grab onto. Things happened around or to him, but with no central core to it, it all just felt like a random series of circumstances. 2y
BarbaraBB @TheKidUpstairs I feel relieved you felt the same. I was wondering if it was just me but you say it so well: there was too little Pascal to hold on to. Thanks! 2y
