My Next Breath: A Memoir | Jeremy Renner
post image
Panpan

This is an #unpopularopinion and I feel terrible about it. Renner‘s accident was horrific and his recovery nothing short of miraculous. This book, however, was so repetitive and Renner‘s insistence that he was responsible for all of the pain, fear, and stress his family experienced witnessing the accident and its aftermath bordered on performative martyrdom. I hope he‘s in therapy for the psychological trauma.

With 76% read & 9 chapters remaining…this is a solid DNF for me. No matter what I did, I could not focus or keep track of everything that was going on. Too wordy for my tastes - reminded me of reading Shakespeare in HS😬🫨

I very much enjoyed the group read setting, just not this book😂🤭

IMASLOWREADER love the powet of DNF lol 1w

Cuilin #hailthebail seriously life‘s too short. I hope your next book is more enjoyable. 1w
DieAReader @Cuilin 💖Thanks! 🤓So very true! 1w
CoverToCoverGirl Lol! I quite liked Shakespeare. 🤭 I just read Huck Finn and didn‘t really care for it. I‘ll have to put this one my classic to read list. I really liked the movie. Daniel Day Lewis wasn‘t hard on the eyes either. 😁 6d
DieAReader @CoverToCoverGirl 😁Chances are you‘ll enjoy this one more than I did. Never saw the movie unfortunately. 6d

#unpopularopinion Oh how I wish the inside of the book was anywhere near as beautiful as the exterior. It has sprayed edges and exquisite end papers. The text? It did not work for me at all. The writing feels choppy and juvenile and I already dislike the MC. 😭

TracyReadsBooks Gorgeous book, bad story…I somehow finished this one though I was generally disappointed by it. 2w
Blh87 Oh, no! I have this book sitting on my shelf and was so looking forward to it! 2w

#unpopularopinion I know a lot of people really enjoyed this book, but it's just not doing it for me. Maybe it's because I've just listened to two mysteries, I'm burnt out on solving murders, or maybe Lafferty isn't an author for me. I also bailed on The Shambling Guide to New York City. I think it's time for something lighter.

BookmarkTavern I loved this one, but I can definitely see how it‘s not for everyone! Hope your next book is better! 2w
RamsFan1963 @BookmarkTavern I'm going to hold on to the book and try it again some other time. I just don't think I was in the mood for another mystery right now. 2w
BookmarkTavern Absolutely fair! Also, if you enjoy audiobooks, that‘s how I read this one and I really enjoyed it! 2w

Mehso-so

This felt like 6 shows that had adults playing teens, and 1 that actually cast teens. After Fresh Prince, So-Called, and Dawson‘s, it felt like the book deteriorated into ways show business is horrible to people - people in show business, fans, and people in general - and how that was expressed in the next four shows.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics There was a lot of “no one had ever done this before,” but she said the exact same thing about the show before it when it did pretty much the same thing. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1mo
GingerAntics Maybe I‘m not the target audience? I grew up watching Fresh Prince and Dawson‘s Creek. The rest of the shows I never watched and hadn‘t even heard of some of them. I have seen some episodes of Friday Night Lights, but everyone I knew who watched that show was a middle aged woman, so I never saw it as a teen show. When I asked these fans now, they were all baffled that anyone would call it a teen show. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1mo
GingerAntics “It had teens in it, but it wasn‘t specifically aimed at teens. It was a family show maybe” was the general consensus. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1mo

GingerAntics If Glassman was trying to bring new fans to these shows, she utterly failed. At first, I thought I‘d check out the shows I hadn‘t seen before, but that quickly deteriorated. I do want to check out My So-Called Life. Hearing about the crappy way Apatow treated the Freaks and Geeks cast, I‘m not about to support that. Five minutes into the discussion of The OC the creators were quoted as saying “too Jewish” twice. Nope. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1mo
GingerAntics Then it turned out the directors and crew talked crap about the actors behind their backs. Double hope. I was actually really excited to watch Glee. I knew several fans when it was on the air, and I just didn‘t watch it for whatever reason. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1mo
GingerAntics Then she talked about the writer/creator of Glee venting his own body shaming, homophobia, racism, and general bad humanity through the characters - making actors say and do horrible things to each other for his own joy? Hard pass. 1mo
TheBookHippie 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 I‘ve watched zero of these shows 👵🏼 I did see a few Fresh Prince episodes 🤷🏻‍♀️but that‘s it. 1mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm intrigued because I've watched 5 of the 7 (not Glee nor FNL), but not sure if care enough about them to read behind the scenes drama. 15 years ago, sure. Today? Meh. If you can watch My So-Called Life, I'd suggest that one of the bunch. One short season, a 90s time capsule, and pretty Jared Leto if you're into that. 1mo
GingerAntics @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick yeah, it‘s less BTS and more (supposed) cultural importance. There is a bit of BTS type stuff. I don‘t think I would have gotten through the whole book if it was just BTS stuff. My favourite to hear about, honestly, was Fresh Prince. lol 1mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie lol that‘s fair… this was pretty niche watching, so if you didn‘t have someone in the right age group who actually watched these shows, you‘d really have no reason on to watch them. This was definitely a millennial anthem in a sense. Glee probably did have some gen Z and Fresh Prince had some younger gen X, mostly millennial shows. 1mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I find it interesting my childhood shows still run 😂 I mostly watched old movies with my grandma and I‘m so grateful. I watched Gilmore Girls with my daughter, Fraiser with Mr BookHippie- but we mostly watched VHS BLOCKBUSTER 😂 I worked more than two jobs 14-40 so not much TV for me 🙃 1mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie yeah, long work hours do make it hard to do much outside of work. Gilmore Girls was a brilliant show. I really love that show! VHS Blockbuster seriously brings back memories. lol 1mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I feel like Gilmore Girls would have made a better teen show than some of the nonsense that was listed in this book. Maybe more men need to get comfortable with that show, because seriously that is a show full of powerful women and girls! 1mo

Here goes nothing. Let‘s break some hearts!
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I should know better, by now, not to even bother with Irish-American versions of Irish history. These works are why I have never attempted my own manuscript of Irish history and never will. This is mostly mythology. She makes these claims that have little to no supporting evidence, but no footnotes or citations, so no way of checking her sources. This makes this book dubious as best and a racist at worst. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1mo
GingerAntics Unfortunately, we jump almost entirely from the mythological history to the famine - where she claims the English weren‘t as helpful as they could have been but Queen Victoria was great. I‘m going to need you to show your work on that, sweetie, because the math (and currently available sources) aren‘t mathing on that. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1mo
GingerAntics She claimed sectarian violence - namely The Troubles - was hundreds of years of violence, but fails to mention ALL of that violence stems from the English trying to capture Ireland as their own, while the Irish fought them off in favour of self governance (don‘t even get me started on her precious Catholic Church‘s role in that). Yeah, this was a uniquely Irish problem. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1mo

GingerAntics One could definitely NOT ask India, Jamaica, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago, the UAE, Malta, Kenya, Botswana, the Maldives, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Zambia, or any number of other former Colonies of the British empire about such things. This is Ireland‘s (and the Irish people‘s) failing. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1mo
GingerAntics Not having the Bible in public schools is a “modern tragedy?” Really? Gross. Someone is a good little minnow muncher. I went to catholic school too, and I don‘t see any need to force my beliefs on others. Please be a little more Irish and extend the same courtesy to others. Thanks. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 (edited) 1mo
GingerAntics I‘m going to need to see some credentials and some citations, because the modern history of Ireland seems a little screwed, and none of my academic sources agree with her on many accounts. I‘m so glad she works at a Catholic college, but I am tremendously grateful I have never had to sit in one of her classes because I read more accurate accounts of Irish history in Middle School. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1mo
GingerAntics I can‘t imagine sitting through 13 weeks of this drivel with a grade on the line. FIN … or perhaps Le gach dea-ghuí would be more appropriate. 1mo
GingerAntics I was once working on a paper in grad school where I found a scholarly paper claiming that the Irish people were now embracing Oliver Cromwell as a not so bad bloke… I had an Irish classmate who REALLY begged to differ and laughed at the paper because it was written by an English person and clearly had no clue what it was talking about. I thought of that paper when she talked about English aid during the famine. 🤣😂🤣 1mo
Bookwomble Whoa! Sounds like an awful and biased account! Thanks for your review. 1mo
GingerAntics @Bookwomble the bias is weird, too. Sometimes it is in the Irish people‘s favour, and other times it‘s in the English people‘s favour. It‘s really weird. 1mo

If you like random trivia about entirely unrelated nonsense loosely tied to “writing” via some kind of alcohol or wishful thinking, this is the book for you. If you might enjoy a (too) long diatribe about the differences between diaries and journals, complete with definitions admittedly made up by the author, this book is for you. If you want to actually learn about writing, look elsewhere.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Seriously, this was nearly 5 hours of “all the jobs I‘ve done that I wasn‘t qualified for.” I have no desire to revise HER writing. That is her job. She wasted multiple minutes listing off words for each letter of the alphabet. No idea why. She actually would have preferred a man had told her to smile more. I am seriously embarrassed for this woman. She comes off as a privileged, hateful person in multiple parts of the book. She needs therapy.👇🏻 2mo
GingerAntics I listened to this on 3x speed just to get through the madness. The prompts are really generic and other books will get you way further. This needs a PDF with all of the prompts, otherwise it‘s just a wild ride of going back and forth trying to get them from the audio or you‘re just listening like this is a book worth listening to. I will never be reading anything by this author ever again. #RutaSepetys #YouTheStory #audiobook #neveragain 2mo
julesG I've read two(?) books by her and was underwhelmed. I'm not going to touch this writing advice one. 2mo
GingerAntics @julesG monstrous! I was annoyed most of the time. I don‘t know why I felt like I needed to finish it, but I probably could have bailed and been just fine. Just… ugh. 2mo
