The Late Child: A Novel | Larry McMurtry

Desert Rose Book 2. The books starts out with a tragic revelation for Harmony. Harmony‘s sisters fly to Las Vegas to be with her and her 5 year old son, Eddie. The title serves as a double entendre..which I thought was interesting. A Road trip to NY ensues and all kinds of crazy happens in the midst of deep grief. I loved both books. McMurtry is highly readable and crafts a great yarn, he reminds of of Stephen King in that way.

The protagonist, Harmony, is a single mom showgirl working at the Stardust in Vegas. The characters in this book range from sweet (Harmony) to real creeps and everything in between. Book was written in 1983, the sequel, The Late Child, published 12 years later in 1995. Im picking up sequel bc I want to see how this plays out. #Vegas

Leftcoastzen I love McMurtry but haven‘t read this one or the sequel 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Leftcoastzen From what I gather, they‘re not well loved. I‘ve only read this and Loop Group. I haven‘t read his best stuff yet. I will! 2mo

Are you watching the big game today? Rooting for anyone or just in it for snacks and commercials? Since the game is here in Vegas, the entire city is psyched! I work at The Neon Museum and our signs were used for the cover of the Super Bowl program!!!

Here are a couple great reads about Sin City. Chronicles Of Old Las Vegas gives the history of Vegas from the beginning through present day, and Haunted Las Vegas is a spooky good time!

Ruthiella You are on the spot! 🏈 2mo
kspenmoll This is great!!! Yes we will be watching & having our game day chili , chicken wings & cornbread. 🫕 🌶️🍗🌽 🏈 2mo
Graywacke Rooting for the snacks, and maybe a little for Mahomes. Cool recommendations! 2mo

I listened to this one over audio, great narration. What a wild ride of a book. Amber Jamison can‘t believe her bad luck when she‘s abducted by a serial killer. She‘s rescued by a mysterious woman. After Amber leaves college to escape what happened she falls back into her old patterns. Her escape west has her meet a true crime Vegas group & her mysterious rescuer. A story full of twists & a quick, fun listen. #bookspin book

117/150 I remember trying to watch this in the theater, and walking out after the first half hour. Why this book is beloved is beyond me, it's a incomprehensible mess, a rambling, meandering story that goes no where. Is it trying to make a point, is there a moral here? Seems to be just two degenerate junkies on a spree. No thanks. 2 ⭐⭐
41st book finished for #RushathonExtended @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES @Andrew65

TheBookgeekFrau I hated this book. I wanted to bail, but kept thinking that it had to get better bc it's so loved by many; but nope. I don't know why I keep reading his books. The only one that I thought was really good was 5mo

kelli7990 I‘ve never heard of this book. 5mo
5feet.of.fury I wonder what I would think of it now. I read it when I was in high school and me and my friends were burn outs 🍃it was pretty much required reading 😂 5mo
arlenefinnigan Could not agree more, I hated this. 5mo
RamsFan1963 @5feet.of.fury I've smoke pot, and I still have an edible now and then, but I've never been much on drugs. Almost everyone experiments in high school & college, but the behavior in this book is so alien to me I just couldn't get into the characters or the story, what there was of it. 5mo
Larkken I thought the movie was funny, but I think the book would just be too much and too long. 5mo
Andrew65 On no 😫 5mo
GHABI4ROSES That is the book for the movie? The movie is popular with my twenty-somethings but it never got my attention. 5mo

Quick read at only 216 pages but enjoyable. I picked this up from my local library bc I was going to Vegas and wanted to read something set in Nevada. Protagonist loves hiking in Death Valley and stumbles upon a woman dying in a deserted region of the Mojave. Interesting ride from there. #California #Nevada

#IdiomInsight

Although the idiom #DownForTheCount is sports metaphor that expresses a negative outcome for whoever or whatever the speaker is referencing, for some reason it made me think of counting cards & laying them down.

I chose this book & “21” the movie made from it where 6 MIT math students used counting cards in Blackjack to get more than 3 million $$$ from Vegas casinos. ♠️♥️♣️♦️

Eggs Great choices- I found 21 very enjoyable 🎥 8mo

UNPUTDOWNABLE! Who knew a book about serial killers would be LOL hilarious but also a really good thriller!

Amber Jamison is a whole mess. When she gets kidnapped by a serial killer & is about to be murdered she is upset with herself that it happened to her. Her snark made me snort laugh so much!
But luckily (or maybe not so lucky) she gets saved. And things just get weirder and weirder from there and the twisty tale of a thriller ride begins!

I love Joe Kenda. I will read anything he writes and I loved this book so much. It was very entertaining and I loved the mystery. I definitely hope he plans to write more fiction thriller novels because I couldn‘t get enough of this one.
