Long Way Down | Nick Hornby
post image

I like Nick Hornby, but this was the only one I didn't enjoy all that much. I think the premise - four people unexpectedly meeting on a rooftop, all contemplating suicide on the same night - just seemed too artificial to work. Like a Breakfast Club for adults that couldn't get the humor/drama ratio quite right. #waydownwego #getmovin @eanderson @Cinfhen

LauraJ Also my least favorite Hornby. 6y
Leftcoastzen Wow, didn‘t know about this one .sounds like I don‘t want to know😆 6y
Cinfhen such a great choice....haven‘t read this book but title and premise are 🙌🏻 6y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Yeah, there were moments that were funny, but it was less than the sum of its parts. 6y
ValerieAndBooks I like Hornby‘s essays about books much more than his fiction I‘ve read so far, which was this one and About a Boy. 6y
Suet624 @ValerieAndBooks I agree with you. 6y

#WayDownWeGo , from my location in the US, to Australia for this mystery. I bought the book and am dying to read it. Maybe I can get to it soon, if my library holds would stop arriving...#getmovin

Skeebies05 Why is it that holds all come in at the same time? 🤔 6y
amb 👆that exactly 6y

Cinfhen I love that you‘re strangled by library holds, too!!!! I thought maybe job perk😉 6y
Cinfhen This book was good but nothing earth shattering 6y
LeeRHarry I enjoyed this book and it really captures country Australia well 😊 (edited) 6y
Librarybelle @Cinfhen Hahha! Definitely job perk! The book is an unique setting for me, as I don‘t read much set in Australia. 6y
Librarybelle @LeeRHarry I think it‘s the setting I‘m looking forward to most! 6y

The Madness of a Seduced Woman | Susan Fromberg Schaeffer

#getmovin #waydownwego

I loved this book as an uncritical teenager but I think I would find issues with it now. It is a ride through extreme passions and ultimately down into “madness” after betrayal. Agnes is from a line of women cursed by rare beauty and disasters brought about by reckless passions. She attempts to break the chain but ends up committing a crime and #waydownwego

Kind of like an eighties attempt at Wuthering Heights melodrama

Cinfhen I‘m actually intrigued 😂👍🏻 6y
Centique @Cinfhen yeah I think it‘s probably still a very enjoyable melodrama, as long as you don‘t analyse it! 6y
Cinfhen I‘ll look around charity shops for a used copy 😀 6y

#GetMovin #WayDownWeGo

This prompt made me think of one of my favorite movies as a child, Hello Down There, a 1969 film about a family who moves into an underwater house for 30 days to test out the design. I adored this movie & watched it every time it showed up on television. I wanted to live there-claustrophobia be damned!😆There was not to my knowledge & online surfing, a book tie-in so I'm linking it to this book, which looks pretty great.🐬

DebinHawaii And how can you resist a tagline like "A combo of scuba dupes rock up a storm in a mad pad under the sea..." ? And Richard Dreyfuss is in the band...) 6y
saresmoore The tagged book is awesome, by the way. My kids love it! 6y
PatriciaU LOVED that movie!!! 6y
Bookzombie I need to see this movie! 6y
Cinfhen I so DONT remember this...but Richard Dreyfus is totally legit!!!! 6y

I‘m handing in my thesis this summer, which, most likely, entails some months of unemployment. So to keep those months from being too 💩💩 I‘m planning a list of chunksters I really want to read when I have lots of time. This is what happens when #waydownwego in the rabbit hole of procrastination. So if you have any #chunkster must read, let me know! 👍

#GetMovin

Kalalalatja @Moray_Reads that sounds good! I‘m thinking I‘m finally going to read this 6y
Moray_Reads @Kalalalatja oh, my favourite! 6y

Moray_Reads I loved this one a couple of years ago 6y
LittlePixels One of my favorites from the past few years. It's emotionally shattering, but amazing. 💔❤️ 6y
Kalalalatja @Moray_Reads well, with a comparison to the Shadow of the Wind, I have to read it! @LittlePixels I read that some years ago, and I absolutely loved it! 6y
LiterRohde 🕐 The Dark Tower Series ~ Stephen King

🕑 The Stand ~ Stephen King

🕒 Lisey‘s Story ~ Stephen King

🕓 Bag of Bones ~ Stephen King

🕔 The Goldfinch ~ Donna Tartt

🕕 The Bone Clocks ~ David Mitchell

🕖 The Circle Series by Ted Dekker

🕗 Station Eleven ~ Emily St. John Mandel (Not quite a chunkster, but good)

And, no, I am not a fan of Stephen King. 😜
(edited) 6y
Jerdencon And even though you aren't a Stephen King fan I would say 6y
ephemeralwaltz I really want to read Bulgakov too!! And I have Middlesex, The Crow Girl and A Little Life to get to this summer :) oh and The Grapes of Wrath! 6y
chlolovesbooks Good luck on your thesis! What are you writing about? 6y
Vertabrain I second The Pillars of the Earth. While you‘re at it, read the sequels too. Good luck on your thesis!! 6y
BethwithBooks The Historian has some heft to it but it makes for a quick read I think. Good luck with your thesis!!! I just finished my own so I feel you! 6y
Kalalalatja @LiterRohde @Jerdencon I had been thinking about some Stephen King, and now I have something to choose from 😄@vertabrain I have already read the Follet books, but good pick! @BethwithBooks Congratulations!! 🎉🎉🎉 @Billypar already read, and enjoyed that one 👍 and thanks! 6y
Kalalalatja @ephemeralwaltz oh, good picks! 👏👏 @chloeeblack I‘m writing about how other People‘s reactions and feelings of shame can keep rape victims from reporting the crime 6y
Cinfhen Ooooh, you got so many good suggestions!!! I‘m reading the King 11.22.63 this summer....we could buddyread!!! And I would suggest (edited) 6y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen that could be fun! I just have to buy the book first 😄😄 6y
Cinfhen Me too!!! I still need to get a copy💕 6y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen and I still need to finish my thesis. I‘m hoping for July 1st, but you never know 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Cinfhen Tentative date of early July sounds good....I won‘t hold you to it 😘😘😘 6y

Underworld: A Novel | Don DeLillo

#GetMovin #WayDownWeGo
I have gone with the title here rather than the subject.
I guess underworld counts. A great book with an incredible first chapter and memorable images of the planes in the desert.
Really want to reread but it's so big.

Vikkiha I have this in my stack but it is so long it is putting me off. 6y
andrew61 @Vikkiha i remember enjoying it but big books do need a lot of commitment - i generally aim one or two a year. 6y

I‘m reading my first #steampunk ever for #booked2018. Major cities move around on huge rollers and are called traction cities and have to eat other cities to survive. Early in the novel two characters fall/are pushed off of London and #waydownwego to what is termed the outcountry, the muddy earth below the traction cities. #outsidemycomfortzone #getmovin #newgenre

Cinfhen Oh wow!! Look at you #multitasking 🙌🏻❣️ Are u enjoying the book?? Im dreading the #steampunk prompt 6y
Blaire @Cinfhen yeah, so was I. I went for ya steampunk because felt like less commitment. I‘m not generally a fantasy/sci-fi person so didn‘t know what to expect. The world of mortal engines is strange and I‘m not sure I truly get it, but its interesting and the narrative moves along, and there‘s an adventure/suspense feel to it. 6y

Cathythoughts Sound fun & exciting! I think I‘ll try & join in the challenges next year. Fair play to you for trying something different! Exciting 6y
Blaire @Cinfhen I‘ve read cinder, because saw it recommended a lot. I found it just ok. Finished it but wasn‘t compelled to read more of the series. Quick read tho. (Didn‘t realize it was steampunk when I read it - before I‘d heard the term). (edited) 6y
Cinfhen I‘m not sure if it‘s legit #steampunk but someone on Litsy said it was...I read Monstress but it was definitely NOT steampunk in my opinion so I‘m not counting it. 6y
Cinfhen @Cathythoughts if you want you can still join in on #booked2018...especially since it‘s split in quarters...the new quarter starts July 1 (edited) 6y
Cinfhen But feel free to jump in today... 6y
Centique @Cinfhen oh boy I love Cinder but I think you‘ll hate it. It‘s more sci fi/fantasy/fairytale retelling in my opinion. There‘s no steam technology or Victorian dresses. What about Soulless? You won‘t love it like I do but it‘s quick! 6y
Centique @Cinfhen the more I think about it, I think you‘ll hate that too 😂😂 But I won‘t be emotionally scarred by you hating it like I will with Cinder 😂😂😂 😘 6y
Cinfhen Hmmmm, Everybody seems to love Souless....I‘m gonna go with that choice @Centique although I‘m 100% sure I‘m going to HATE IT 6y
Centique @Cinfhen 😂😂 Good! You‘ll possibly struggle with the tone at first. Try and think of it as gently ridiculous, it‘s over the top but it‘s tongue in cheek. It took me a few pages to relax and just let it be. Expect silly and you might get the odd giggle. 👍👍 6y
Cinfhen I think going in with low expectations might serve me better @Centique I just feel like I‘m wasting my precious reading time 6y
