Everyday Words in Irish | Jo Litchfield

#WeirdWordsWednesday @CBee

I know this is a beautiful word, but I laughed when I saw it because when you learn Irish, one of the first things you learn is I am hungry, sad, tired etc Ta mé tuirseach. I just think it‘s funny that I was telling the world I had a soul deep fatigue at the age of five!! Maybe that‘s why the Irish are known for their melancholy. Lol

Chrissyreadit this is me!!!! 3w
Cuilin @Chrissyreadit 💜 I love how this word sounds tear-sha 3w
Chrissyreadit I love that also!!! I love Irish Gaelic- i bought some pimsleur classes to try and learn it but it‘s still on my back burner. Do you speak Irish? 3w

lil1inblue Well, today's weird words all seem to sum me up perfectly. 😂 3w
dabbe I feel this one in me bones. 🧡💜💛 3w
Cuilin @Chrissyreadit Not as good anymore since I don‘t use it. I use some apps to keep it. I‘m helping beta test Sionnach. 3w
CBee I love this! I‘m mostly English with some Scottish and Irish so, my whole family is a melancholy lot 😂 3w
Cuilin @dabbe yep, daily! 3w
Amiable This makes me think of the German word “weltschmertz” —literally, “world-pain" or "world-weariness.” It describes the existential sadness or melancholy you feel about the state of the world and its inability to meet your idealized expectations. I love that other languages can sum up such heavy emotions in a single word! 3w
Cuilin @CBee 😢😆 3w
Cuilin @Amiable Yes. A few letters for a lot of feelings. 3w

I know I‘ve done an interesting color words post before, but I just LOVE unique words for colors. Here are a few, and here‘s an article to read: https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/59328/19-colors-youve-probably-never-heard
Who knew “puke” and “xanadu” were colors? #weirdwords #weirdwordswednesday

Here‘s one for #weirdwordsWednesday. This comes from “The King of the Cats,” by Stephen Vincent Benet.
Pizen-sure… here‘s the thing about this one. I can‘t find it online written like this. It must be an alternate spelling of poison-sure, but there‘s not much about that either. I guess the meaning can be inferred, but it‘s an interesting expression. It gives me saloon in a western vibes. Has anyone seen this written elsewhere?
@CBee

CBee I‘ve never seen it before - super interesting!! 1y

Is anyone else excited anytime they read another description for the wind besides whispering which is so painfully overused it‘s almost its own cliche?

Jari-chan In my region of Switzerland we use this word quite often 😄 1y
IndoorDame @Jari-chan love that language is regional like that even when you‘re all speaking the same language and the same dialect! 1y
CBee A great word 😊 1y
dabbe You mean you don't like “the wind whispered wistfully through the trees?“ 😂😂😂 1y
IndoorDame @dabbe I know, I‘m a terrible person 😂😂😂😂 1y

#WeirdWordsWednesday This picture is the cover of a book I haven‘t read. It‘s actually the second book in a trilogy that I haven‘t read. But I really like the covers and the books sound interesting.

I don‘t have the book yet but I thought it would be fun to share the cover for #WeirdWordsWednesday.

CBee Oooo, this is a word I‘ve never heard of and didn‘t know existed - thank you 😊👍🏻 (edited) 1y
CatLass007 @CBee You‘re welcome. It‘s the first book in a trilogy and if I get a chance to listen to this one and I like it, I‘ll make sure to tag you on those when I listen to them. 1y
CBee @CatLass007 that would be great! Thank you! 1y
Bookwomble The first time I came across this word was in a short story which had a vicious dog coming for the MC, and it described their fear of the approaching animal's "mordacious proprinquity", and it's a phrase I've never forgotten and, though rarely, have used! 1y
CatLass007 @Bookwomble Mordacious AND propinquity in the same sentence?! Excellent!😂 1y

Really nerding out for this #weirdwordsWednesday. While doing my Greek homework this morning I came across the word τσιπούρα. Having been to a Greek distillery before, I thought this was the word for what some people know as “raki,” an anise-flavored alcoholic beverage (which is apparently the national drink of Turkey!). The problem was it was on a list of things you can buy from a fisherman. (See comments for more explanation.)⬇️
@CBee

psalva Confused, I looked it up and was puzzled to see it defined as “daurade,” another new word for me. I looked that up (sigh) and learned it is a type of sea bream. Okay, all was explained. I‘m glad I learned the difference between τσιπούρα and τσίπουρο. Only one letter and a shifted accent between them. Now I won‘t order the wrong thing if I go back to Greece! 2y
CBee Down a bit of a rabbit hole with this one, hmm? 😂🤓 2y

Did you guys know that this delicate, introspective poet who writes mostly about cultivating joy and gardening got his start in college basketball, thought about going the pro sports route, and wrote his 7th book entirely as an ode to Julius Erving?

CBee Wow! I had no idea ♥️ 2y
