I love Gaelic. And I‘d love to be part of a cèilidh - just the music would be worth it ♥️♥️ #weirdwords #weirdwordswednesday

IndoorDame Gaelic is always so lyrical, I love it 💜 3mo

Here‘s one for #weirdwordsWednesday. This comes from “The King of the Cats,” by Stephen Vincent Benet.
Pizen-sure… here‘s the thing about this one. I can‘t find it online written like this. It must be an alternate spelling of poison-sure, but there‘s not much about that either. I guess the meaning can be inferred, but it‘s an interesting expression. It gives me saloon in a western vibes. Has anyone seen this written elsewhere?
@CBee

CBee I‘ve never seen it before - super interesting!! 4mo

Is anyone else excited anytime they read another description for the wind besides whispering which is so painfully overused it‘s almost its own cliche?

Jari-chan In my region of Switzerland we use this word quite often 😄 4mo
IndoorDame @Jari-chan love that language is regional like that even when you‘re all speaking the same language and the same dialect! 4mo
CBee A great word 😊 4mo
dabbe You mean you don't like “the wind whispered wistfully through the trees?“ 😂😂😂 4mo
IndoorDame @dabbe I know, I‘m a terrible person 😂😂😂😂 4mo

#WeirdWordsWednesday This picture is the cover of a book I haven‘t read. It‘s actually the second book in a trilogy that I haven‘t read. But I really like the covers and the books sound interesting.

CBee I really like this word! 5mo

I don‘t have the book yet but I thought it would be fun to share the cover for #WeirdWordsWednesday.

CBee Oooo, this is a word I‘ve never heard of and didn‘t know existed - thank you 😊👍🏻 (edited) 6mo
CatLass007 @CBee You‘re welcome. It‘s the first book in a trilogy and if I get a chance to listen to this one and I like it, I‘ll make sure to tag you on those when I listen to them. 5mo
CBee @CatLass007 that would be great! Thank you! 5mo
Bookwomble The first time I came across this word was in a short story which had a vicious dog coming for the MC, and it described their fear of the approaching animal's "mordacious proprinquity", and it's a phrase I've never forgotten and, though rarely, have used! 5mo
CatLass007 @Bookwomble Mordacious AND propinquity in the same sentence?! Excellent!😂 5mo

Really nerding out for this #weirdwordsWednesday. While doing my Greek homework this morning I came across the word τσιπούρα. Having been to a Greek distillery before, I thought this was the word for what some people know as “raki,” an anise-flavored alcoholic beverage (which is apparently the national drink of Turkey!). The problem was it was on a list of things you can buy from a fisherman. (See comments for more explanation.)⬇️
@CBee

psalva Confused, I looked it up and was puzzled to see it defined as “daurade,” another new word for me. I looked that up (sigh) and learned it is a type of sea bream. Okay, all was explained. I‘m glad I learned the difference between τσιπούρα and τσίπουρο. Only one letter and a shifted accent between them. Now I won‘t order the wrong thing if I go back to Greece! 8mo
CBee Down a bit of a rabbit hole with this one, hmm? 😂🤓 8mo

Did you guys know that this delicate, introspective poet who writes mostly about cultivating joy and gardening got his start in college basketball, thought about going the pro sports route, and wrote his 7th book entirely as an ode to Julius Erving?

CBee Wow! I had no idea ♥️ 9mo

I love this word and never knew this was what it meant! I also love looking at old advertisements - makes me nostalgic for when things were (maybe) simpler? Not that I‘m old enough to have played with a zoetrope…..but I digress. Enjoy 😂🤪 #weirdwords #weirdwordswednesday

TheBookHippie Oh wow! How fun! 10mo
IndoorDame I had no idea those had such a cool name! I‘m old enough to have played with flip books, which aren‘t as aesthetically appealing lying around a playroom, but were a really neat evolution of that since they could tell a whole mini wordless story… 10mo

CatLass007 I‘ve seen pictures of zoetropes, and I‘ve heard the word zoetrope. But I never put the word with the toy. Cool. 10mo
CBee @IndoorDame my oldest son loves to make his own flip books 😊 10mo

willaful When I was a kid, we had a book of paper cut out old-fashioned toys and it included a Zoetrope, so I guess I'm old enough to have played with one. 😂 We used to put it on the record player so it would spin. (There, now you know how old I really am!) 10mo
CBee @willaful that sounds cool! I had a record player - one for me and my parents had one too 😊 I guess I just meant I wasn‘t old enough to have played with it when it was new? 🤷‍♀️😂 10mo
