🥱

Another contemporary thriller full of horrible people being horrible, with an over-the-top plot twist. I liked the setting and the concept, but it was still fairly predictable (despite that twist) and I only genuinely cared what happened to about 3 people.

I‘ve had my BOTM copy since April 2020 😳 but listened to the audio. Good narration for the most part, but I wasn‘t such a fan of the male narrator.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

mcctrish I think this was best as an audio book but the male narrator was a weird choice 2y

Just finished reading this one. My first Lucy Foley- it was a quick read and I liked the fast pace with interesting characters. Also history of the area was in there too. The plot was not an easy one to figure- as “whodunnits” go. I recommend it. I‘ve got “The Invitation” checked out of hers.

Audiobook. This was a bit of an edge-of-your-seat book. Not told chronologically, you learn early that someone has been hurt or killed. But then the story is told through a handful of characters from different points within the long wedding weekend. And it works. I didn‘t know who the victim was, or who did it, until the author wanted me to. Very good.

Cpg Yes, it was a very “tangled web woven”! Oh my! 😱 2y

The story is about a Wedding Weekend where we get six povs, and I'm not saying that I had any issue with that, I've read many novels that has a certain number of people narrating. No, sir. I had a issue that these many povs were not needed. They were there to create confusion between the choosing villain by the author but it was very clear from the start who was bad and who wasn't.

I guessed the half twist and the writing was so stretched!

My partner and I do not read the same kind of books (because he‘s boring and only likes nonfiction) but we both listened to this together as we moved across the country, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Had modern Agatha Christie vibes! It kept us alert on our drive and interested enough that we finished it too soon and then had to find another book! A good, not all blood and gore mystery book. TW: some suicide talk 9/10

I loved this book. 🤩
Each chapter is a characters retelling of events that happened. It goes back and forth throughout.
A wedding on a rugged Irish isolated island. A wedding and a body.
It was a real slow burner and I just wanted answers but I couldn‘t guess the ending.
Slow burning tension, great characterisation and left in the dark til the end. I‘ve loved both mystery books by Lucy Foley. 5 ⭐️ read

It's a psychological thriller and I can not stress enough that it is one of the best of its genre. From the wedding of two rich celebrities living lavish lifestyle to the murder happened on the wedding night at the island, the whole setting of the story is remarkable. You won't be able to guess the murderer till last. It's a must read for all the mystery lovers. ⭐

Book review update time!

Listened to the full cast audiobook recording of this book. Narration was excellent, but the story was a bit lackluster. I really enjoyed The Hunting Party by the same author, so I had greater expectations for this book, but was disappointed by the execution. The premise was great, but I found myself bored throughout the book, the characters were all terrible people, and even the “twist” ending couldn‘t redeem it for me.

If you read Lucy Foley's first book last year it appears for the first half, very similar. Characters, setting all very reminiscent. The ending however, is not and tied together really well. Worth reading but not the most inspiring read of the year so far.

An enjoyable thriller that owes quite a debt to Big Little Lies: five story lines converge to condemn toxic masculinity and the ricocheting effects of misused privilege. Loved the setting and the classic murder-mystery conceit. It was a fun read.

I had such a fun time finishing this murder mystery during a dark and stormy night ⛈ It was intriguing to guess who the victim was, while also guessing who was the murderer and their motive.

I loved all the tension created between the various characters, and reading about how all their lives connected. Very unsettling, anticipatory vibe throughout the whole novel.

I definitely want to read more by this author now!

Low pick only because of the ending. The ending was the best part, the last 20% or so. Gripping and suspenseful I couldn‘t turn pages fast enough. The rest of the book is just okay. The characters are all unlikeable, awful people and feel like copies of the characters from her previous work The Hunting Party. Think I‘m tired of mystery/thrillers full of awful people and college boys that never grew up 🤷🏼‍♀️

brittanythebookdragon My thoughts on this one exactly! I haven‘t read The Hunting Party but this one really turned me off from wanting to read it. 3y
RainyDayReading @brittanythebookdragon Yeah honestly between the two, The Guest List in my opinion is better than The Hunting Party. You wouldn‘t be missing anything by not reading it. The characters are just as insufferable. 3y

Wow, what a doozy, and not a wedding I‘d RSVP to!! 😳🤣 My last #LMPBC book for this round, and it‘s a winner! Eerie and atmospheric it‘s a tale of secrets, revenge and just plain evil all culminating at an island destination wedding. Told in several voices, the suspense keeps building as the reader knows the reckoning is coming. So it‘s not so much a murder mystery but rather a who‘s going to get to the bad guy first! LOL Recommended. 4.5/5⭐️

12/22/2020 Ok, I couldn‘t put this book down and I am impatiently waiting to read the next book by this author. The nonlinear timeline is everything in this book. You know there is a wedding, you know everything falls apart, you know someone is dead. The author slowly and methodically weaves the web of this story together.

One of the only books that multiple perspectives that work and flow perfectly. Loved the concept of the wedding that the problems are all within the wedding party, it was original and well laid out. The revelations of information are perfect, you know enough to keep you going but not enough to be sure about the ending. This book will keep you on the edge. In conclusion, it's a great murder mystery.

Another book I never would've read if not for #NewYearWhoDis. Terrible secrets come to haunt the wedding party on a remote Irish island. Someone has been murdered, & there are plenty of possible victims & more than enough motives. I don't normally read mystery but I loved the atmospheric setting & the pacing. Everything was revealed so expertly & though I was worried the ending might leave me wanting, it turned out quite satisfying. @Laughterhp

The atmosphere is done so well – this deserted, dangerous, boggy island with a storm coming. The opening chapter starts with things going wrong during the wedding, then backs up to everything leading up to what happened at the wedding. Parts were creepy, and I was kept wanting to read. There were not very many likeable characters in this book, but there were a couple. No surprise here, but everyone had secrets

Trying to get back into the groove of dog walking now that I've been working with a trainer and have a little more confidence (and thick skin) in dealing with my sweet pup's less than sweet behavior around strangers. And good audio books are a plus!

Read-y_Picker I love that that vest and leash exist! Stay strong and keep it up! 3y
DogMomIrene One of my dog‘s is dog reactive, so I get how hard walks can be. My husband and I have been working with her with 2 trainers (because we love both of them and their styles are similar but their diff exercises give us variety) for 15 months. Improvement is ongoing, but she‘s definitely made huge strides! Dog trainers are amazing! Your yellow vest and leash are perfect. Not everybody had heard of the Yellow Dog project, so I love the messaging too 3y
MicheleinPhilly Keep it up! Pickles became leash reactive a couple of years ago and the strides she made with a trainer were life changing. Now she only reacts to people that seem shady which is A-OK with me. 3y
See All 8 Comments
rachelsbrittain @Read-y_Picker thank you! My trainer suggested something like them and they have been godsends in 1) cueing people to give us a bit of distance and 2) letting people know she's nervous not an irredeemable man killer 😅 3y
rachelsbrittain @DogMomIrene ah fellow dog parents with reactive dogs! The solidarity is nice because honestly so many people are totally clueless and don't get how stressful it is for the owners and how much work they're putting in despite all appearances 😂 I'm so glad you've had so much luck with your trainers. We're only a few sessions into meeting with ours but it has already been so helpful. A long way to go, but we'll get there 3y
rachelsbrittain @MicheleinPhilly that's where I hope to get with Kara! Hearing Pickles went through that too and has made a lot of progress is super encouraging! If we can get to just barking shady people and not, ya know, strollers (because those are apparently terrifying) 😂🙈 3y
DGRachel I love that vest and leash. Bailey walks so nicely by my side unless we encounter people or animals. She‘s so scared of strangers that she turns into Cujo, barking and pulling. A lot of people in my neighborhood are great and give us space (they have reactive dogs, too), but there are a couple who practically run us over speed walking with their own reactive dogs. 😔 3y
MicheleinPhilly Oh you would be amazed at the stuff Pickles is terrified of. She doesn‘t have a problem with strollers but scooters are apparently a MASSIVE THREAT. But once you recognize what her triggers are and have solid tips for combating the reactivity, you‘ll both feel so much better. I used to get SOOO stressed walking her. 3y

Great book and great audio book! Foley does a great job by building up an intense atmosphere and I just really wanted to know what everyone's been hiding. I loved getting to know the characters, even more since the story is told without calling out to the drama llama. The audio book comes with a fitting full cast, which make the characters even more real. I'm totally on the hype train with this one!
