A landmark in American literature (Chicago Sun-Times)Stephen Kings #1 national bestseller about seven adults who return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they had first stumbled on as teenagersan evil without a name: It.Welcome to Derry, Maine. Its a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made twenty-eight years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the citys children. Now, children are being murdered again and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derrys sewers. Readers of Stephen King know that Derry, Maine, is a place with a deep, dark hold on the author. It reappears in many of his books, including Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, and 11/22/63. But it all starts with It. Stephen Kings most mature work (St. Petersburg Times), It will overwhelm you to be read in a well-lit room only (Los Angeles Times).

I adored this novel. The depth of friendship in the story and the heart Stephen King puts into his character development is truly amazing. Pennywise is such an interesting villain and all the hero characters have traits that are endearing. I don't think anyone could read this book and not want to identify as one of “The Losers“ by the end. Quite a few thrills and gross moments between the characters with the backdrop of fictional Derry.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is one of those books that holds you hostage until it‘s finished. We all know Pennywise, but it‘s much deeper and darker than you could ever imagine. I went in never having seen any of the films and I‘m grateful for that. King, you are a masterful storyteller.

MrsMalaprop I remember going to see a late night session of this movie, then walking home. The laneway/shortcut we usually use was locked (never seen it locked before or since) and we had to retrace our steps and take the looonng way home on the dark, deserted suburban streets. I was perusing Libby for my next #scarathlon audiobook and IT is listed as being 45 hours long! How can this be? I feel bad for the narrator, if it‘s not a glitch. Can anyone confirm that this book is this much of a tome?!

Soubhiville It is a brick of a tome so I wouldn‘t be surprised if it is that long. Of course if you speed it up you can make it shorter! 1mo
Soubhiville Looks like The Stand is 48 hours and both books are close to the same page count, so seems accurate. 1mo
Larkken @Soubhiville oh man. I‘ve been going back to Kings books that I never read before, but I dunno if I have the stamina right now for another Stand-level brick 🫠 thanks for the info! I‘ll save it for another time 😆 1mo

I watched the new version of It today for #Scarathlon2022. I actually like the older version better. This Pennywise didn't inspire as much dread for me as his scenes seemed more about shock factor. Of course the book was the best of the three.
@StayCurious #TeamMonsterMash

braddsibbersen Yeah, the new movie had fine character moments but the horror scenes all felt like they were trying too hard. Next time someone wants to remake this they should film Summer of Night instead. 2mo

Well this book has with out a doubt solidified my fear and loathing of clowns. Thank you, Mr King. This one took me the better part of three weeks to read because 1) hello it‘s over 1k and a chunkster and 2) clowns. Yeah I read this during the day. Sorry not sorry. I can understand why he‘s a horror go to author.

I remember the first time I watched the miniseries and how much it scared me as a kid. I took me until last year to finally read this and it did not disappoint. What I love here is that all the characters were fleshed out and memorable. Everything in this book seemed to have a purpose, there wasn't any fluff. And the root of this book is the power of friendship; how it can transcend time and place. And how friends can conquer anything.

This was one of the first Stephen Kings I read & is still one of the scariest. Definitely gave me a lifelong distrust of clowns! The movies do not do it justice, the sense of dread & hopelessness that permeates this story will stay with you for a long time after(though there‘s also a ray of hope at the end) Highly recommend.

This last chapter I read was so eye opening. Being scared or fearful does something to the mind, and standing up to life‘s small challenges is so satisfying. My guess is Eddie‘s mom didn‘t want to lose her son at a very young age.

Well, I didn‘t know if I‘d ever truly get around to reading this book on my shelf, but a favorite author and podcaster Laura Tremaine hosts a Stephen King Summer book club and this was the first selection this summer. It wasn‘t as scary as I thought it would be! A "Something Wicked This Way Comes" post reminded me how much I like "kids on bikes vs. supernatural evil" books. I've read "It", of course, "Summer of Night", "Boy's Life", "Shadowshow" by Brad Strickland, and Thomas Tessier's "Phantom". I'm also familiar with (but haven't read) Brain Keene's "Ghoul". Anyone know of any more I can add to this list?

My all-time favorite Stephen King book, forever. My heart was taken by Pennywise a long time ago and Bill Skarsgard reignited the flame in 2017.

I read this book as a child and despite my efforts to be anything but a scaredy cat, I remember putting the book in the freezer each time I closed the book for the day.

This book is absolutely horrifying in the best way. King is a G.O.A.T and I appreciate whatever goes on in his attic.

Definitely the best Stephen King book i‘ve read so far. It had the most descriptive horror/gore scenes that really painted a picture, but also realistic and in-depth characters that sometimes it feels like you‘re reading about yourself. It was slightly mature at some points, but it really contributed to the story.
