The HFN YA I needed at this time. Light, funny with a pinch of teenaged angst. The leads are well rounded. I loved all the K-Pop settings. Not complacent and everything is great settings. I liked it a lot. Would love to read more from this author.

I liked the classic yet with a twist storyline. Both leads are interesting and loveable. I liked both of them, their bickering and more personal conversations. Both are resourceful and are used to get their way. The secondary characters start out slim but I found myself hoping that I will get to read Cecily‘s view and story, also Archie‘s and Aunt Dorothy‘s.

A good first novel.

I'm coming out of social network hibernation. 🤞🏻

Haven't read something this fast in well over a year.
Good : The plot. It keeps you reading. You want to know what happens next. There are no "dull" moments. The main characters are vivid, interesting and most of all for me, present. The world building is good. You slowly get the information as is Crane. Okay: The romance. I bought it. Still, it was quite fast and sudden. But that's me and it's knitpicking.

Mehso-so

Two minds on this. This is the opening act of a very successful series. Ever more since the TV adaptation. It‘s very much of its time. Consent wasn‘t something even in the mind of the readers back in 2000. Not like now. I read the reviews before I got to the plot point that now sticks out like woah. More in the comments.

#romance

writerlibrarian See, I don‘t read Daphne has this really, really smart young woman. She‘s self-centered, loved without any restrictions by her large family. She‘s a good friend, a good sister but a naive young woman. That naivety is the anchor of the book, is the reason the drama exist in the book. Simon is closed off emotionally. His survival depended on this. He‘s a man of his time with a self awareness where self control is everything. (edited) 2y
writerlibrarian This story is part old school romance where violence, rape were acceptable plot points and part something that was probably new and surprising at the time with characters that are self aware and have a different agency. The friendship between Daphne and Simon is adorable and how they interact and “court” is fun. 2y
writerlibrarian Still, Daphne knows that her actions were wrong and feels some guilt but not enough to reconsider why they were wrong. Simon dismisses the actions, he got it coming. Sounds so familiar. Of course the reverse situation adds a layer of malaise for us reading this story in 2022.

It‘s a problematic story. Were it written now, I‘m not sure that plot point would be used.

llwheeler Impossible reading challenge? I'm intrigued, this book has been on my tbr for a long time. Do you have a link? 2y
writerlibrarian @llwheeler The challenge is part of French CBC radio show Plus on est de fous plus on lit. There's a facebook group, a coach, etc. It's all in French https://ici.radio-canada.ca/ohdio/premiere/emissions/plus-on-est-de-fous-plus-on... 2y
See All 10 Comments
writerlibrarian @llwheeler if you decided to try the book. One of the best advice the coach gave is to start with reading Yourcenar's notes usually at the end of most edition. It's good advice. 2y
llwheeler Merci! I'll have to check if my edition has notes in it or not... I had no idea this was considered such a hard read 😅 2y
rwmg I've only ever read it in English and although it's one of my favourite books I can imagine it would be hard reading it in a language you're not so totally fluent in. 2y
writerlibrarian @llwheeler I think it's the whole historical context that's the major hurdle with this book. That's what came out during the discussions on the radio show. 2y
writerlibrarian @rwmg French is my first language. I think it's more the level of erudition and the historical context that are difficult. It's been on my TRP forever. I wanted to challenge himself to start reading again. 2y
llwheeler Maybe I'll be okay then, since I studied classics in school. Now I'm curious to give it a try, I might bump it up on my list. 2y

Hi… it's been a while. 2021 was… well.. all my spoons went to getting through each day one day at a time. 2021 is the year I read the least books ever. I'm at 13, hoping getting to 15 maybe.

I found 2021 harder than 2020. Work was intense, demanding and completely bonkers every single week. I come home and just sit and don't want to do nothing other than sit, listen to podcast or radio. Tv is not much.

I did finish the new Lady Sherlock. 🥰

tournevis Welcome back! 😘 😘 😘 😘 😘 😘

To be fair, I was barely here too. For me too it's been worse that 2020. I have never had a more intense work year in my entire live and that includes the year of my comprehensive exams where I had to read, understand, and synthesize 15000 pages of history studies and theory in the span of 10 months.

It feels a lot like a first book. Lots of good ideas but the execution is lacking a bit. The pace of the plot felt off to me. It got going than stopped abruptly and lingered then got going again. I liked the main characters Marion and Bill I got a feel of them. What they wanted, what they were about. The secondary characters were more prop to the story then full fledged characters. #netgalley #mystery

writerlibrarian The idea is interesting, a secret organization doing business from the underground of London. The links to the historical timeline are teasingly well done (Bletchley, the weapon's race, etc.) and inserted in this somewhat alternate world that has potential.

Very much a first book that delivered less then promised.

This was a NetGalley ARC.
