Perfect for fans of The Last Magician and Descendant of the Crane, this heart-stopping debut is an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai, with rival gangs and a monster in the depths of the Huangpu River. The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery. A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Ganga network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliettes first loveand first betrayal. But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their gunsand grudgesaside and work together, for if they cant stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

I didn‘t love this as much as I was expecting to. The time and place setting was interesting. I felt like Gong tried too hard to take on too many “issues” with this book, which led to it being a bit scattered and unfocused. I also couldn‘t feel the chemistry between the two MCs- a pretty big problem for a R&J retelling. The supporting characters fell absolutely flat for me too, which didn‘t help. I didn‘t hate it and it picked up towards the end.

Great concept, shaky execution. Some of the phrasing and anachronisms just FEEL like a young person's attempt at sounding historical or poetic to me. But I love Juliette as a character, and I'll probably get to the sequel just for closure! #yalit #historicalfiction #historicalfantasy

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

An intense retelling of Romeo and Juliet that takes place on the turbulent streets of Shanghai during the 1920s. But there‘s a twist. A literal monster, scales and all, is roaming the streets spreading madness in a population already being squeezed to a breaking point. Juliette and Roma are much more cutthroat than the original Shakespeare characters but there is still something innocent about their love.

CW: gore, gun violence, death

These Violent Delights blew me away. Retelling of Romeo and Juliette set in an alternate 1920‘s China. It was dark and wonderful and I plan on diving into the conclusion soon. #12Booksof2021 @Andrew65

3.75/5 ⭐️ Short story that takes place before These Violent Delights. I wish I would have read it closer to the book cause I think it helps add more background on Roma and Juliette.

I‘ll be entirely honest, it grabbed enough of my attention to finish it in 2 hours. But I‘m not sure I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it…. It was good, I guess… maybe the second one will allow me to make up my mind….

Rehesina I understand that though! People really hyped this up, but I didn‘t find it particularly memorable. 4w

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

I read the play in high school, but my true love of R&J comes from the Leonardo DiCaprio and Clair Danes movie from the 90‘s. Despite the tragic ending (and how they could have figured this out without dying 🙄) I watched that movie lover and over. Loved what Gong did with the story and can‘t wait to read the sequel.

Didn‘t love this one as much as I thought I would. Didn‘t like the two main characters and the atmosphere fell flat for me. A bit gory in places but not suspenseful. It did get a bit better near the end but not enough for me to be interested in the second book

BoleyBooks Wise choice. I forced myself through both books…it was disappointing. The story had so much potential and just didn‘t deliver. 2mo

I really can't decide how I feel about this one. I had really high hopes that this would be a book I loved and maybe that's part of the problem. The plot was awesome but I found Juliette hard to like, Roma didn't have much of a personality and 1920s Shanghai didn't have enough worldbuilding. And they spend the majority of the book hating each other. I'll finish off this series because the book did improve near the end.

My tentative plan for #Booked2022 #Winter! Tagged another book in consideration for the Set in China prompt.

1. The Witches: Salem, 1692: maybe a stretch, but it does involve a close look at Puritanism.
2. 🎧 📖
3. I have 3 on my TBR for this prompt, also tagged book and a Lisa See novel 🎧 📖
4. Maybe I will finally read this trilogy!
5. From Nigerian publishing house Farafina
6. 🎧 📖

I started out not really loving this; but I think that it‘s because I was expecting a retelling of Romeo and Juliet and that‘s NOT what this is. It‘s more a monster story based on the characters from the play set in 1920s Shanghai. When my perspective changed, the story improved for me. I‘ll likely read the sequel because I want to find out what happens to the characters…I‘ll just have to put up with monsters I guess. #sundaybuddyread

A surprising pick for me! Two rival gangs in Shanghai and a mystery madness that is killing off people from both sides. Roma and Juliette come together to stop the madness and save their people and beloved city from dying. A bit gory and bloody with detailed descriptions in some parts, however the humor was fun and I enjoyed the reimagined story of R&J and their gay friends. Eagerly awaiting the sequel. #audio #sundaybuddyread

I am not a big fan of Shakespeare‘s Romeo and Juliet but I quite enjoyed this retelling for October‘s #SundayBuddyRead Set in 1920s Shanghai with rival gangster families, political uprisings, some great LQBTQ characters & even a monster, it was perfect for my #scarathlon #teamhendrix theme. A bit gory with the mind-altering bugs 🐜🤢but engaging & darkly fun with lots of twists & a major cliffhanger ending that will have me reading the sequel.

I‘m glad to read more soonish.

Anyone else not ready to leave these characters yet?

Anything I missed? This last part was quick!

rjsthumbelina The last part flew by! I already have the sequel pre-ordered! I know the angst is cheesy, but that doesn't stop it from working for me. Lol. Tyler. I like him not.

Alisa. She gets saved.

Marshall?! Clever plan? Bound to fail?

Juliet‘s plan is ?! All for love of everyone ?

“Release THEM” ….. this can‘t be good.

Well. That ending. Now what ?!

rjsthumbelina Yeah, sounds like there are more bugs. I thought that maybe he was raising the killer bugs somewhere? I thought the Marshall thing was pretty clever, and I wondered at how she could pull that off in the moment. Seems like it would have had to have been preplanned. But I also liked it on the author's part bc I found it an interesting way to weave in that plot point from R+J 3mo
vlwelser I totally forgot about the potion. And I'm glad Marshall isn't really dead. Because I accidentally read a blurb about the next book and was totally convinced that he was going to actually die. 3mo
See All 15 Comments
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I forgot as well 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3mo
JaclynW @rjsthumbelina So clever! I loved that part. I was also taken by surprise. I get distracted too and keep forgetting that this is a Romeo and Juliette story. Haha! 3mo
TheBookHippie @JaclynW me too I get so involved and then go DUH 😂💀 3mo
JaclynW @TheBookHippie yep! 😂 3mo
DebinHawaii I kind of answered this in the last question. I remembered the potion & her stealing it from the lab & Marshall watching her amused so I knew he wasn‘t dead. But I still don‘t get how there are more bugs to release if they all die with the monster‘s death??? 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii RIGHT?! WHAT IN THE WORLD?! 3mo
katy4peas @vlwelser I forgot too, but I liked this twist and am so glad that he is still alive. 3mo
katy4peas @DebinHawaii yeah! The mother bug and the monster were both killed. 🤷‍♀️🤯🙃😮🤦‍♀️ 3mo
TheBookHippie @katy4peas 😝all the bugs … did he send a bug somewhere ?! To be hatched ?! 3mo
katy4peas @TheBookHippie so creepy🤢 3mo
mollyrotondo I didn‘t like that Juliette schemed the same plan that Roma planned. So now Roma hates Juliette. So now in book 2 instead of Juliette hating Roma, Roma will hate Juliette. It‘s just not different enough. I didn‘t want Marshall to die though. I wonder how and where the bugs will effect other people 3mo
Sargar114 I LOVED the Marshall twist and the nod to the original story but a different use. My thought on the bugs is that possibly you only kill the bugs that THAT specific monster released. So there‘s more host bugs lurking. 3mo

So it was Paul
Indeed
He thought he loved you
It wasn‘t love

Qi Ren was turned into a monster…
All those bugs …
Then dead
Over?
Why does she feel empty?

The bugs ack gross could hardly make it through!

Also my original thought was Paul (Paris) I got distracted and now I‘m like DUH.

Thoughts on what still may be?

Why is she feeling empty?! She KNOWS it isn‘t finished ?!

rjsthumbelina I hope we somehow find out more in the next book about Paul's motivations for spreading the virus in the first place. The explanation given didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Also, why did he believe that he was in love with Juliette? There's a few things re:Paul that I hope are made more clear in the sequel 3mo
rjsthumbelina I felt like she was feeling empty bc she knows that now Roma is experiencing the same feelings toward her that she has spent the last 4 years feeling about him 3mo
vlwelser There is a whole lot of crazy going on with this bit. He just seemed totally deranged to me. 3mo
See All 9 Comments
DanaManiac Yes, this part confused me a little bit. I could see if Paul was pretending to be in love with Juliette– but, him being so evil and actually thinking he was in love with her was a bit confusing. 3mo
DebinHawaii It did seem a little out of left field & were his motivations strictly money? Is his father who the note was to? To release them all? And I am also confused because are the new things they are releasing different because shouldn‘t ALL the bugs have tied with the monster? So many ???? I am going to need to read the sequel! 😡 3mo
mollyrotondo It made sense to me that Paul was irrationally in love with Juliette because Paris in the play insists on marrying Juliet even though he barely knows her and she clearly has no interest in him. So it fits his original character. And I‘ve definitely met guys like that 😂 I think Juliet feels empty because she knows it was too easy. I have no clue how they will make the story different in book two. It just seems like the same threat is lurking. 3mo
Sargar114 @mollyrotondo I was okay with it too, plus he was crazy clearly so no logic needed there! Lol 3mo
Sargar114 I wished it would have just ended with the message instead of Juliettes reaction to reading it. It would have been a much more impactful cliffhanger. I‘m worried that the second book is just going to be more of them running around chasing monsters versus the familial dynamics and interpersonal drama. 3mo
mollyrotondo @Sargar114 I am afraid the second book will be more of the same too. 3mo

“America. Men in women in white hoods roam the streets to murder black folks -written laws prohibit Chinese from stepping on the shores where immigrant children are separated from the mothers never to be seen again …”

“The land of dreams is to wake up sometimes… “

Amen?

Interesting the author adds this?

Is it the greatest country ? Are Americans just told that ? Ever think how otters view us?

rjsthumbelina I don't think of the US as the greatest country. I don't think of any country as 'great' anymore. I loved what this section acknowledged about the United States. It's not the perfect ideal that we hold in our heads. I thought this was interesting bc the author grew up in New Zealand but currently lives in the US for school 3mo
vlwelser I think I highlighted this on my Kindle. I think it's interesting to add this perspective. Because America isn't the land of dreams unless you fall into a very specific demographic. But it doesn't perhaps have a ton to do with this actual book. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I found it interesting as Paul is American, has come there and created chaos! 3mo
See All 21 Comments
vlwelser @TheBookHippie I didn't even think of that! Evil American! Wait. I thought he was British. 3mo
DanaManiac I find the quote to be accurate, but it did feel a little bit out of place in this novel. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 😂😂😂omg could be I just keep thinking American 😬😂😂😂 3mo
vlwelser 😂 I have no idea now. Didn't he have a notebook or something you could only get in the UK? This might drive me slightly crazy. But not enough to borrow the book again and start hunting for it. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I‘m texting my friend to look she borrowed my book 😂😂😂 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser OMG BRITISH 🤦🏻‍♀️😝Bahaha it was more fun when I thought him American 😂 3mo
vlwelser I like that you were convinced that the supremely evil dude was American. Sorry I ruined that. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I‘m going to still pretend he is 😂😂 3mo
JaclynW @TheBookHippie @vlwelser With Paul....either American or British it kind of is equivalent, right??! They both think they are all powerful and try to insert themselves in everything. 3mo
JaclynW @DanaManiac I thought that too. I may have to go back to that part to see if it truly fit and I just missed it. The book does talk a lot of how Juliette came from school in the US and the things she learned there. So I guess in thinking about those references, it may not be too much of a stretch. 3mo
JaclynW @rjsthumbelina I wonder this too. Why does someone always have to "be best." Why can't we all work towards good things? To me, this attitude just drives towards division and less towards working together. In this global time, we need to have room at the table for everyone and work towards common goals. 3mo
DanaManiac @JaclynW That‘s a good point. I guess looking back, it felt like American interference wasn‘t highlighted as much as that of the French and the British… 3mo
TheBookHippie @JaclynW same same yes 3mo
DebinHawaii @vlwelser @TheBookHippie I thought British & just checked my Kindle & yes, the author refers to them as British merchants & British visitor, so definitely British. 😉 3mo
DebinHawaii I think the America quote fits the story because Juliette lived & studied there. And I agree with the quote & the sentiments that no country is truly great. 3mo
katy4peas @JaclynW this fits in with both Roma and Juliette‘s dreams of being able to lead in a nonviolent way one day and to be able to end the blood feud. They don‘t really like being violent, but they are in order to survive. 3mo
JaclynW @katy4peas Yes! Totally! 3mo
mollyrotondo I think there were some characters who wanted to flee and move to America (I forget who exactly now) but really they wouldn‘t be accepted anyway because of how Americans treated he Chinese. Americans are very egotistical which has not helped us improve the past few decades. Our country is very behind other countries especially in education. I think Juliette has a point when she says she needs to stay in Shanghai and help it rather than flee to US 3mo

Kathleen
Rosalind
Well wow.
Thoughts on their interchange and also Rosalind using Celia. Extremely hateful ?
Rosalind a traitor?

rjsthumbelina I don't think that Rosalind is a traitor, but I do think that she holds a lot of resentment toward Juliette, who has the name needed to actually become powerful. Rosalind doesn't like that Juliette is, essentially, untouchable. And I thought her using the name Celia was to try to appeal to Kathleen, not to be hateful to her. It just upset Kathleen bc people could overhear, and it might expose her identity 3mo
TheBookHippie @rjsthumbelina interesting I thought it vicious -her using the name like that. Experience and perspective of the reader, yes? I wonder what the author intended. Seeing it‘s YA I figured she was making a point. 3mo
vlwelser I bet Rosalind turns even more evil in the next book. I felt bad for Kathleen even if she acts like a derpy follower a lot of the time. 3mo
See All 13 Comments
DanaManiac A part of me wonders how much of the animosity could be clarified by a few simple conversations… Like Kathleen and Rosalind could certainly have talked about Amethyst friend being a jerk. It‘s too difficult for me to say for sure how evil Rosalind is, when I know that she has a lot of inaccurate knowledge about Juliette. 3mo
JaclynW @vlwelser @DanaManiac @thebookhippie @rjsthumbelina I don't trust Rosalind. She makes me nervous. What drives her? I could her being a traitor. Kathleen seems like a loyal friend to me. I can't wait to see how these characters come to light more in the next book. 3mo
DanaManiac @JaclynW I can totally see that as well. I guess when a character is so obviously bad, I wonder if it‘s a trick from the author to make me wrongfully suspect them, or if it‘s actually that straightforward. 3mo
DebinHawaii I still vote that Rosalind is a traitor but have not viewed her as really evil, just maybe bitter & a survivor. 3mo
JaclynW @DanaManiac Could be either! Hopefully we find out in the next book! 3mo
mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii I agree. She‘s bitter and she knows she is not safe like Juliette is safe with the Scarlet Gang. She‘s not evil but she‘s not to be trusted since she is jealous of Juliette. 3mo
Sargar114 @JaclynW @vlwelser @DanaManiac @TheBookHippie @rjsthumbelina @mollyrotondo I tend to think she‘s the traitor as well. I saw her use of the name Celia as a last grab effort to appeal to her sister, but I could see how it was a way to make Kathleen recognize she knows more and can be dangerous. I‘m also looking forward to this aspect is the character development 3mo
vlwelser @Sargar114 Does this mean you're joining us for the sequel in February? You know you want to. 3mo

Vaccine before the madness….

What.a.plot. 👀

Thoughts?

rjsthumbelina I honestly loved the monster/madness plotline. I did guess who the villain was at less than halfway through the book though, which isn't a good sign bc I never guess plot reveals correctly! 3mo
vlwelser This book was so fun. Even if parts of it were truly ridiculous. 3mo
DanaManiac Ha ha, this part of the plot felt a little bit too real for my comfort LOL. 3mo
See All 7 Comments
JaclynW The monster thing was crazy and kind of cool ar the same time. I loved how this was what brought Roma and Juliette back together - working towards a common goal for the common good. Serious madness. And yes @DanaManiac maybe too real for comfort. Haha! 3mo
DebinHawaii I think the monster plot worked. I had my suspicions about the monster in the last section we read & it turned out to be true, but I felt like Paul & his father were more players in the game. I liked how it kept me guessing. 3mo
mollyrotondo @DanaManiac haha a little for me too 😆 3mo
Sargar114 I wasn‘t a fan of the monster/madness plot. It felt like a distraction to the human relationships and drama from the original story. That being said, it seemed to be a good device to bring them back together but not in a “loving way” 3mo

Communist thrive in places people are starving and poor and take advantage of chaos … off with theirs heads down with the rich..
Is this still true today?
Is it just communist?

Pic:

https://www.thatsmags.com/shanghai/post/14316/this-day-in-history-founding-of-th...

rjsthumbelina I think it's always easier for extremist groups (not making a good or bad judgement here necessarily, just noting that ideologies are very extreme and different from the norm) to gain a foothold in places were there is a lot of suffering happening. 3mo
TheBookHippie @rjsthumbelina I agree. Even if the perspective is you‘re suffering it happens. 3mo
vlwelser It always makes me think of the French Revolution. They didn't (for the most part) end up communist. But I can see the appeal. A few people have everything and communism might seem like a good alternative though it is sort of the opposite extreme. 3mo
See All 7 Comments
DanaManiac I don‘t think that this is exclusive to communism. I think that in any situation where people are poor and/or desperate, a regime change promising to solve their issues will be appealing- it‘s just in our nature… (edited) 3mo
JaclynW @DanaManiac That's exactly what I was going to say. Desperation will grasp on to anything that holds promise of something better. @thebookhippie @vlwelser @rjsthumbelina 3mo
DebinHawaii Yes, whoever paints a picture of something better well will appeal to those who are suffering and/or the have-nots. 3mo
mollyrotondo @DanaManiac definitely agree. When people have been put in a desperate situation for a long time with no end in sight from those in power currently any type of ideology that is different and offering change will appeal to these desperate people. I think politicians in general take advantage of poor hopeless people. 3mo

Truth. The.
Love. Loved.
Roma refused to kill her.
The stars incline us they do not bind us.

Four years ago.
Still in love
Think the original Romeo & Juliet were in love?
Fun word enter change while getting the story.
So they‘re 19 now.
Interesting to make them this much older?

rjsthumbelina I ❤️ the use of this line! It felt perfect. I don't know that I believe that the original R+J were in love - it has always seemed more like an infatuation to me. But, I guess there's no way to know if someone is in love unless you ARE that person. And so often, even then, it's confusing 3mo
vlwelser They're still so young. But I like that she makes them older than the original pair. 3mo
JaclynW @vlwelser I love the age change too. @rjsthumbelina I also think it's hard to say if someone really is in love or not. Who is to say?! I met my husband when I was 16. I would say we were "in love" within a year or so of dating. But generally, I say teens are mostly "in lust" and not in love. ? Love comes after really getting to know each other in my opinion. ❤ 3mo
See All 6 Comments
DebinHawaii I have always thought infatuation for Romeo & Juliet but those were different times in terms of age & maturity, so maybe. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Having them older with a backstory four years prior works well here. 3mo
mollyrotondo I don‘t think the original Romeo and Juliet were in love. I think it was lust and a little danger since they were family rivals. I think it‘s interesting she makes these characters a little older but they are still very young and they a lot has changed since they were first dating so they really need to get to know each other wholly. 3mo
Sargar114 This story feels like the “what if Romeo and Juliet survived” and I really like that aspect. I think my biggest issue with this book was the expectations set of it as a retelling vs a new story based on these characters. When I changed my perspective I was enjoying it more. I agree in the original R&J it doesn‘t seem like love; however when it‘s your first experience with an infatuation that strong, how can you tell the difference. 3mo

Roma…I had no choice …
Ah gardening …speak to Juliette with a plant in her hand and risk the consequences …yikes!
Any gardeners here?
Is she trying to ground herself, the scarlet in her blood, the love she‘s trying not to have for Roma…she keeps repeating Romas words. Overthinking or working it out, I enjoyed the way this is written.

I see teens do this all the time and even me. Overthinking 😬 helpful?

rjsthumbelina I don't think overthinking is ever helpful, but it's something we all do - especially those of us with anxiety! 🙃 I think Juliette had to re-examine the choice that Roma made, to be able to forgive him and move forward. But it was really painful for her to look at, even when she had all of the facts 3mo
vlwelser I loved this and then she went totally crazy. It does seem a little out of character but I get her need for thinking time. 3mo
JaclynW @rjsthumbelina 🙌to the anxiety. Overthinking is an issue I have. I could totally identify with Juliette here. I also love gardening and could see how she finds that therapeutic and a good way to think. I look forward to the next book to see how these revelations are worked out. 3mo
See All 6 Comments
DebinHawaii Not a gardener, but sometimes I do my overthinking & worrying in the kitchen cooking something & it is my place where I go not to think too. But it‘s generally when I am thinking too hard that the things I make don‘t turn out as well. (But I usually don‘t wreck & destroy them after! 😉) 3mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I definitely do this while cooking! 3mo
mollyrotondo Uhh I overthink everything 🤣 anxiety just consumes me sometimes. So I totally understand Juliette here and I understand s needing an outlet to help regroup. 3mo

It‘s never as simple as ONE truth-NOTHING ever is…

Roma trying to explain to Juliette his actions….

“Both things can be true” is a saying I thought of.

How often does that very thing change perspective ?

rjsthumbelina We are wired to think in terms of 'black and white,' but it's rarely that simple. Roma was faced with 2 terrible options - he picked the one where Juliette would live, despite the fact that it meant he had to do something terrible to her, to make her hate him. 3mo
vlwelser I love them as a couple even if their intentions sometimes go awry. 3mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I do too. I like how they are written here. 3mo
See All 6 Comments
JaclynW @TheBookHippie @vlwelser I also love how these two characters are written. And like @rjsthumbelina said, nothing is ever black and white. We know this, but we seem to forget/aren't thoughtful sometimes when in conversation with others or when others "do something" to us. There are so many examples in this book. 3mo
DebinHawaii I still had it pegged as his father‘s doing until this reveal & in one sense it was, because I didn‘t see Roma as having that killer instinct but to protect those he loves he does & he made the choice he did to protect her. I always think of the “there are three sides to every story” quote. 3mo
mollyrotondo Nothing is black and white. Or very rarely let‘s say. Roma needed to make a terrible choice and he chose to save Juliette‘s life even though she hated him for making the other choice. I just really don‘t like that the end of the book had Juliette do the same thing in order to save Roma. I could have done without that. 3mo

Roma to Juliette
You have always feared weakness
Why is that you think?
Premonition ?

Do you?

rjsthumbelina I agree with him that Juliette fears being perceived as weak, even her own perception of her cannot contain weakness. I think that's bc she feels like it's her duty to take care of all of the Scarlets, and the rest of Shanghai, and giving the idea that she might be weak could put everyone in danger, including herself. You can't be seen as weak and run a gang. 3mo
vlwelser I definitely think she focuses pretty hard on what other people think of her. To the point where she's afraid to be herself in public, or perhaps at all. 3mo
See All 7 Comments
DanaManiac I agree and can see why. Loyalty is very important and she has a history of falling for someone in their rival gang. There are others not set to inherit the gang, who would gladly take it by force. I don‘t think she has any other option in her eyes… 3mo
JaclynW @rjsthumbelina @DanaManiac @vlwelser I agree with you all. You said it so well. She cannot allow herself to be weak, which definitely has its drawbacks as we saw. I kept feeling that pressure she was feeling and it was heavy. 3mo
DebinHawaii Yes, I agree with what has been said here. To be weak or to be perceived as weak means the end for her with the Scarlets, even with her family and puts them all at risk. (edited) 3mo
mollyrotondo I agree with everyone. She also has the stigma of being a female who will inherit the throne and she knows the gang will respect her less just because she‘s not a man. She puts a lot of pressure on herself to not appear weak now so that her gang will depend on her and slightly fear her once she is in power. 3mo

TheBookHippie @robinb the girl -who is on the spectrum-and her manager who came from down the parking lot. It was sad because no one would help her take them out -you are supposed to have two for big orders…. It would have avoided the spill. My grandson and I got out and helped after we asked if it was okay. You are suppose to remain in car. She was so upset. I kept telling her it was okay. People are cruel. I‘ll never get it. The others should have helped her. (edited) 3mo
Patchshank Just awful. Companies always expect one person to do the work of several people and then wonder why they can't get positions filled. I've known several people who work/have worked for Walmart and they always seem to do that to people. Horrible place to work from what I've heard. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Patchshank I agree I‘ve heard that as well. 3mo
robinb @TheBookHippie Oh no, I hate to hear that. That poor girl. 😔 And yes, she definitely should have had help getting it out there. What‘s with common kindness anymore??! Much less policy? 3mo

Kindness is free, People forget. 3mo

I read Romeo and Juliet so long ago in high school that I can't make accurate comparisons, so I just enjoyed the first half of this retelling duology on its own merit, and I thought it was great. It has more historical fiction/ gangster/ sci fi elements than romance. The book is definitely genre bending. I can't wait for the next one!

Catsandbooks I already finished it and all I'll say is 😱 3mo
mollyrotondo Would someone be so kind as to explain to me why exactly Kathleen couldn‘t go by Celia? I was confused about that part and the issue was brought about again as I sit here reading the last section. I don‘t quite understand why her father made her use the name Kathleen instead of Celia. @katy4peas @TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii @Catsandbooks @Sargar114 3mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo all I have is Celia and Rosalind are cousins in As you like it -Shakespeare -it is a Shakespearean name but also it‘s rumored that this was a lesbian couple … I‘ve no clue. Celia a boy? I‘m lost as well…. 3mo
Catsandbooks @mollyrotondo It was to save face. There was 3 Lang siblings. The original Kathleen died. And instead of letting Celia use her chosen name the father said the brother died and now she is Kathleen. It was his way of "accepting" her while also saving face. 3mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie I‘m so glad I wasn‘t the only one confused by all of that. But that is an amazingly deep Easter egg in the book if the author really had Celia from As You Like It in mind for that whole storyline. Celia implies lesbianism so the father wouldn‘t want his child to be associated with lesbians? That‘s amazing if you nailed it 😂 but it was a very confusing section and not sure why it was needed. 3mo
mollyrotondo @Catsandbooks oh wow. That is horrible of the father. Doing that makes it seem as if Kathleen the original was replaceable. That‘s awful. I feel sorry for the Kathleen who is no longer alive and the daughter who is still living not being allowed to have her own identity. He disgraced two of his children that way. What a disgusting man. Thank you for this clarification! 3mo
Catsandbooks @mollyrotondo Sure thing! And yeah terrible father. But it's better than him shunning or killing her. Cause I could see that happening too. Considering the time period and culture I could see this happening more than we think. I mean it unfortunately still happens today. While the acceptance of transgender people has grown, there are still many that face prejudice and violence all the time. 3mo
Sargar114 @mollyrotondo I saw it as a way of trying to accept his daughter. I can see the negative of it but like @Catsandbooks said I was thinking more the time and culture it seemed a way of the father trying to improve her survival in a harsh society 3mo

For a Chinese woman your English is extraordinary. Microaggressive/demeaning makes Juliette wonder if she‘d be seen as less than if she sounded like her parents.

Ever noticed that English speaking people learn another language- brag about it -or brag about their children being bilingual, but when a non-English speaking person or child has to learn English or is multilingual they are looked down upon? The difference is what?

vlwelser I think this is weird. Americans are always surprised when native English speakers also speak another language. I have definitely encountered this quite a lot. 3mo
DebinHawaii I think the difference is that collectively, Americans have an expectation that everyone should defer to them whether in this country or not, so why should they learn or change. 3mo
mollyrotondo Americans are extremely egotistical and entitled. We think we are the number one when really we are extremely behind a lot of other countries when it comes to education. For those Americans that have the resources to learn another language they think they hold all the power and those from other countries are beneath them. It‘s disgusting. 3mo

Too poor to deserve …
Angry enough to rise up
Is this thinking STILL around today ?!

vlwelser I think people don't realize what a difference they can make and then end up doing nothing while the crazy people with too much ego have no problem with this. 3mo
DebinHawaii I do think there are those who believe that whatever their situation, it‘s “their lot in life” & they don‘t try to change it. 3mo
mollyrotondo I think the gangsters think that the poor need to stay low and the foreigners in the book believe the poor don‘t deserve more. That is why the communist party is gaining ground. The poor are being awakened to the fact that they should strive for more control. 3mo
See All 7 Comments
Catsandbooks This thinking is still true. Look at the idea of the American dream. Everyone thinks they can make it. That if they just work hard enough or pull themselves up by their bootstraps that they can be successful and rich. Unfortunately the system is set up so that this rarely ever happens. 3mo
DanaManiac Absolutely still valid today. The fact that people lost businesses, homes and jobs while the richest people had major earnings without proper taxation is bonkers. I feel like I‘m living in an alternate universe. People also think that if they protect the interests of the rich, they‘ll be protected “when they get there” 🙄 3mo

vlwelser It's a lot. 3mo
DebinHawaii There are a lot of side characters to keep track of! 3mo
mollyrotondo There is way too much going on this book. Monster. Politics. Romance. Family drama. Family feuds. Characters who we haven‘t even met. It‘s too much. It should have been simplified. 3mo

Catsandbooks Paul is definitely hiding something. At first I felt like there was a lot of characters and things going on but it's coming together. 3mo

DebinHawaii Yeah, it‘s got me stumped. The Communist Party or Nationalists seem to gain the most from it as a fear tactic but I just don‘t know. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
mollyrotondo I thought we already knew this from earlier in the book. The insects are part of the monster. It wasn‘t new information I thought. I am not sure in any way why a political party would use this tactic. TheBookHippie @vlwelser Tyler yes. Loathe him. He probably is behind it all. 3mo
DebinHawaii @vlwelser Hmm, I was still blaming Roma‘s father for killing the servants and Nurse, but Tyler is an interesting option & I could totally buy it. 🤔 3mo
See All 9 Comments
vlwelser @DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie my logic is that he seems to be most interested in Juliette unraveling and getting her out of the way. Roma's father is my second guess, but it doesn't seem twisty enough for this particular book. We shall see. Hopefully. Unless she saved it for the next book. Which would be just plain evil on the part of the author. 3mo
mollyrotondo @vlwelser oh that makes more sense that Tyler was behind the attack. I kept focusing on the father too. 3mo
DanaManiac @vlwelser that‘s a good theory! I, too had been focusing on Roma‘s father, but Tyler makes a lot of sense! 3mo

mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii I wonder if Rosalind is the spy too. It would make sense that Rosalind would be an enemy of Juliette‘s since she was Romeo‘s first infatuation before Juliet in the original play. 3mo

Catsandbooks Rosalind is a mystery. I don't really trust her. I like Kathleen though! 3mo
DanaManiac I wonder if she‘s suspicious of Juliette because she thinks Juliette was the one to knock out her friend lol. Or maybe the author WANTS me to think that so that I don‘t suspect Rosalind of being the spy 🕵️ 🧐 (edited) 3mo
TheBookHippie @DanaManiac OH That's GOOD!!! I wonder if you are right?! 3mo
DanaManiac @TheBookHippie right? Because she didn‘t ever find out that her friend was a terrible person…so she must think poorly of Juliette just on principle. 3mo
rjsthumbelina Yeah, I really want to like Rosalind. But there's got to be a reveal coming that involves her... 3mo
Sargar114 @DebinHawaii @mollyrotondo I was wondering if she was the spy too…maybe because she plays both sides is why the monster didn‘t attack her earlier 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3mo
mollyrotondo @Sargar114 oh good point. I wondered why she didn‘t get attacked like poor Alisa got infected. Your theory would help that make sense. 3mo

Larkspur - man/woman ???????! Fake person?

Zhang Gutai has no power- he has a monster doing his bidding
But who ?!

Anyone else notice this is a disease made in China needing a vaccine 😬?! Clearly written before COVID but still 😳

vlwelser Covid isn't the first thing like this that started there. It's just the one that got totally out of control. 3mo
DebinHawaii No clue on Larkspur yet. For Zhang Gutai, the old man assistant seems suspicious. 🤨 Has anyone seen Gutai? I can‘t remember but is he the old man, maybe? Hmm… 3mo

mollyrotondo This is the part of the story that I wish would move more quickly because I‘m interested in learning how this monster is controlled. I have a feeling we won‘t find out though until book 2 😏 3mo
rjsthumbelina I have a theory as to who Larkspur is, but I'm keeping it to myself for now 🧐🤓 3mo
Sargar114 I‘m not sure, possibly Dexter using a fake name? Roma and Juliette interviewed Roma earlier but that‘s the last we‘ve seen of him I think @DebinHawaii 3mo
