The Chosen One: A Novel | Carol Lynch Williams
19 posts | 32 read | 47 to read
Thirteen-year-old Kyra has grown up in an isolated community without questioning the fact that her father has three wives and she has twenty brothers and sisters, with two more on the way. That is, without questioning them much---if you don't count her secret visits to the Mobile Library on Wheels to read forbidden books, or her meetings with Joshua, the boy she hopes to choose for herself instead of having a man chosen for her. But when the Prophet decrees that she must marry her sixty-year-old uncle---who already has six wives---Kyra must make a desperate choice in the face of violence and her own fears of losing her family forever.

#AyupAugust
At 13, 15, 16 & 17, it‘s #TooMuchTooYoung for Kyra, Sara & Rachel, Twig & Hanna to be forced into a life of polygamy & marriage to men old enough to be their fathers or even grandfathers. All 4 of these novels from my “read” stack are set within religious sects & cults where young girls are abused & treated as chattel.

squirrelbrain Which one(s) would you most recommend Deb? 5y
DebinHawaii @squirrelbrain None are perfect but I liked them all for different reasons. The audiobook of The Chosen One is probably my favorite, followed by 5y

I am a sucker for books about cults, and I read this in one sitting. The author did a good job of shaping the world and writing believable characters, but there were a few things that felt off and the ending left me with several unanswered questions. It wasn‘t the best fictionalized cult book that I‘ve ever read, but it wasn‘t the worst – it would be better for those just starting to fall down the rabbit hole of cult-related stories.

Really enjoyed this one. I found a lot of the subject matter to be frustrating, but I loved rooting on the main character, 13 year old Kyra as she fought for her right to chose her own future when her community tried to force her to marry her 60 year old uncle. #fightforyourrights ♥️

This is such a sad book. I felt so bad for Kyra however for being just 13 she had enough nerve to do what needed to be done. It's a shame that things like this really happen with people using God as their reasoning. I read this for SWON teen reading challenge.

#DecDays #Believer I have long been fascinated with cults & sects-religious or not & reading about why people believe what they do. I like both fiction & non-fiction but for this prompt here are 6 novels from my stacks where the young women, girls in some cases, started out as believers. In most (except for The Girls) it was the life and belief system they were born into. I've read them all except the last one, which is in one of my #TBR stacks.

TricksyTails I've also been fascinated with cults. I'll need to add these to the TBR! Thanks, lovely enabler! 😆 7y
DebinHawaii @TricksyTails Always happy to help others grow their #TBR stacks. I feel better when my friends have stacks equal to or bigger than mine! 📚📚📚😬📚📚📚📚🤣 7y
Cinfhen @britt_brooke has a cult fascination...as does @Reviewsbylola 💚💚check out these titles 7y

britt_brooke @Cinfhen Thanks for tagging me! Speaking of cults, I‘m reading The Road to Jonestown right now and it‘s captivating. 7y
DebinHawaii @britt_brooke I listened to the audio of that one last month and felt the same! 👍📚 7y
britt_brooke @DebinHawaii I‘m almost finished with it and it‘s going to be one of my favorite reads this year. The audio is so good. 7y

#Septembowie #YoungAmericans I looked back on my Goodreads YA shelf for some books featuring young Americans that I enjoyed reading or listening to relatively recently. I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting since I've been bad about posting reviews on Goodreads, 😬 but these have some different ages and perspectives. 🇺🇸📚💙❤️

OneCent76 I loved reading Burn Baby Burn! The others look interesting! 7y
DebinHawaii @OneCent76 Burn Baby Burn was great! Although I enjoyed them all, I think my favorite of this bunch is Rabbit Cake. 🐰🎂💛 7y

The stellar audio book definitely made this one a pick for me. Kudos to Jenna Lamia who was perfect-her voice was just what I expected 13-year-old Kyra to sound like. I was completely pulled into the story & rooting for Kyra to escape the fate of being forced to marry her father's older brother in their polygamist cult. A relatively short 5 1/2 hour YA novel, it has some disturbing violence & subject matter-so probably for older teens/adults.👍

BethFishReads Lamia is fab as a young girl, isn't she? 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 I remember liking this book. Tough subject matter, but good story! 8y

Sadly, I have a few hours of editing workshop slides on a Saturday, but it's made better by ice brew coffee, a bagel with lox & a good e-book. This is a YA book about a 13-year-old girl in a polygamous cult. The narrator is awesome--Jenna Lamia who is in her 30s but sounds like a teen & has won awards for her audio book work including this one. Thanks to @Jenshootsweddings - I stacked it from her posts. Happy Saturday Everyone 📚❤️ #HelloOctober

Gulfsidemusing Jenna Lamia is SUCH a good narrator!! 8y
Jenshootsweddings Oooooooooh, I hope the audio is just as good! 8y

DebinHawaii @Lakesidemusing Yes! I pulled up some of her other books and it looks like she has some good ones. 8y
DebinHawaii @Jenshootsweddings The audio is really good! 👍😀 I was waiting on a bunch of library holds & saw this book was available on audiobook, so I grabbed it. 8y
DebinHawaii @Scorpioseah Yes. It's what the library system here uses. It's not a huge selection & there are long hold lists on anything relatively new, but they have some good ones and it's free. 👍Bummer that your library doesn't have a big selection. 8y

I must have read about or saw a recommendation for this one some where, since it was in my library holds. By the time I got it, I had forgotten all about it - literally. So I went into it blindly .... And read it all in one night. Quick paced, intriguing and tense. Thanks to whomever recommended it to me!

Home from Vegas and missing it already. I accidentally left my ereader at my husbands house, which is annoying. Walked down to the library and found this waiting for me - I don't even remember putting it on hold! Guess I'll put Outlander on pause until next week. Now excuse me while I recharge on the front porch and jog my memory about why I wanted to read this one.

Mirshad I want to read this one now, too! 8y

A solid three star book. Ending was slightly jarring and not in a necessarily good/haunting way. Other books have done it much better but a good palette cleanser

Do you ever read a book that you know is going to be three stars but you still want to read it because it's a nice break from what you were reading? Bueller? Bueller?

GinaAnderson All. The. Time. Isn't that what the kindle is for? 8y
CaitlinSiem Oh yeah. But I only DNF books that I abhor. 8y
carys14 I do that often with audiobooks. I often choose to listen to mediocre or fluffy books when I am working on things that need more focus. Or when I just want to coast through a book usually between deeper reads. 8y

carys14 @CaitlinSiem I am the same. I rarely give up on a book even if it is horrible (I am looking at you Fallen) 8y
CaitlinSiem @carys14 😂😂😂 I'm glad I'm not alone in this. 8y
maximoffs @GinaAnderson PREACH. And libraries. @CaitlinSiem I actually have a DNF mark where if by that point I'm not into it, I DNF 🙊 @carys14 see I'm doing the coasting thing right now 8y
Shemac77 All the time. I have to particularly dislike a book to not finish. 8y
BookishMarginalia Yes. I need my palate cleansers just as much as the ultra literary bricks 🤓 8y
Megabooks Yup! But then sometimes I'll bail 80% in if something more interesting comes in at the library. 🤓 8y
Daisey I rate most of what I read as 3 stars. They are enjoyable, but I don't expect them to stick with me. Usually, I only have a couple of 5 star books in an entire year, and I hardly ever DNF (although I think this also comes from learning how to better select books for myself over time). 8y
MarieA Yea! I'm in grad school right now and sometimes my mind is maxed out and I need to read something without high expectations 8y
