Devil's Cub | Georgette Heyer
16 posts | 26 read | 10 to read
Devil's Cub is one of Georgette Heyer's most famous and memorable novels, featuring a dashing and wild young nobleman and the gently bred young lady in whom he finally meets his match?Like father, like son?Dominic Alistair, Marquis of Vidal and fiery son of the notorious Duke of Avon, has established a rakish reputation that rivals his father's, living a life of excess and indulgence. Banished to the Continent after wounding his opponent in a duel, Vidal schemes to abduct the silly aristocrat bent on seducing him into marriage and make her his mistress instead. In his rush, however, he seems to have taken the wrong woman?A young lady of remarkable fortitude?Determined to save her sister from ruin, virtuous Mary Challoner intercepts the Marquis's advances and throws herself into his path, hoping Vidal will release her upon realizing his error. But as the two become irrevocably entangled, Mary's reputation and future lie in the hands of a devilish rake, who finds her more fascinating every day?WHAT READERS SAY:"This is my favorite Heyer? It has action, romance, and humor. I couldn't put it down.""A sequel to These Old Shades, being about the son of the Duke of Avon and Leonie? this is a must read for Heyer fans.""This is my fourth copy of this book.? I have worn out each of my previous copies to the point of falling apart.""Stylish, romantic, sharp and witty?her heroines are enterprising, and her heroes dashing."Margaret Drabble"If you've never read Heyer's books before, prepare to be charmed. Or come rediscover her magic."Linda Howard"Our Georgette Heyer display of the Sourcebooks reprints has been a huge success, not only to those early fans like myself, but to many new readers who appreciate her style and wit."Nancy Olson, Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, NC"Reading Georgette Heyer is the next best thing to reading Jane Austen."Publishers Weekly"Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic. Georgette Heyer achieves what the rest of us only aspire to." Katie Fforde

The sequel to These Old Shades, this is one is even more fun. Vidal and Mary are a perfect example of the (probably very dangerous for the female psyche) romance trope of the rake tamed by the love of a good woman. Even more enjoyable was the return of the irrepressible Leonie and her very grand Monseigneur. #romantsy

didn‘t realize this book was written in 1930s bc of the updated cover.
We have Dominic, a rogue so bad, he‘s nicknamed the devil‘s cub. He wants to run off with Mary‘s sister and she doesn‘t want her sister ruined. She takes her sisters place to protect her, and he does not take being tricked lightly.
honestly wish it focused more on just them and not all family members hunting them down, but alas, & hated that its written in 3rd person

Reread an old favourite this weekend. Still love it. They‘ve updated the cover to this on for my kindle edition- like the idea, hate the fact that they‘ve got a blonde on the cover when Mary is a brunette...

LeahBergen I‘ve read These Old Shades and really must get to this one soon, too. 4y
Leniverse That's a pet peeve of mine, when the person on the cover looks wrong. 😒 4y
Verity @LeahBergen it is lovely to get to see (much older) Avon and Leonie again. And Vidal is everything you would hope their son might be! 4y
Verity @Leniverse it‘s so annoying isn‘t it. And such a simple thing you would think 4y

I read These Old Shades for #LMPBC last month, so I thought I would pick up this one as it involves some of the same characters - basically, it's the next generation as the duke's son is in his 20s & just as much of a rake as his father was before him. I liked this one better than Shades - the pacing here is more even, the dialogue is snappy, & the duke just omniscient enough to keep things lively. Definitely recommend this one to my other ⬇️

robinb I need to get back to Heyer...thanks for the reminder! 😂😂 I don‘t think I‘ve read this one, and it‘s been so long I‘ll have to refresh my memory as to which titles I haven‘t read...they all run together. 🙃 4y
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - yes, they definitely have similar stories!! She's someone that I've picked up a lot of her books used here and there because they're so nice when I want something relaxing & safe lol My #LMPBC group is reading These Old Shades, which wasn't my favorite book of hers that I've read (it was one of her very first stories), but this follow-up to that one was pretty entertaining. You don't have to read Shades first, but it's more fun if you do 4y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks I think I‘ve read These Old Shades (reading over the blurb), and I think I remember something bothering me about it. Maybe an age discrepancy or too much control (by the hero) over a less-advantaged heroine? It‘s been awhile since I read it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - There's a HUGE age gap in Shades (like 20yrs) & it was also just overall very dramatic & French haha I wasn't surprised to find out that it was one of Heyer's very first novels as the writing style feels somewhat undeveloped. I did end up liking the characters, though, so it was fun to see them back in this book, including the duke's brother & sister since my favorite part of Shades was watching them all become a family again haha 4y

Probably should post my own #BookSpin list!! I have a couple of nonfiction that I want to get through this month so I am giving them multiple spaces on my Bingo card - that really helped me get through Moby-Dick in November!! I also have two Brazil books for #FoodandLit, my #LMPBC reads, a #NewYearWhoDis pick, & a #FairyTaleReadingChallenge book... In short, Litsy has once again taken over my TBR! 😂

Still time to post your #BookSpin list ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I don't draw the numbers until the 2nd!!

Oh, and I forgot - I also have books for #AuthoraMonth as well! I'm going to read The Fifth Season, and if it's good the other two books in the trilogy will take free spots on my bingo board!
4y
imyril Meep, I'm late getting my ass in gear for 2021 - time to get my BookSpin chart in place before I see this month's number(s) 😂 4y
Crazeedi What are your Brazil books? I have to pick one!! 4y

TheAromaofBooks @Crazeedi - I'm trying to read one fiction & one nonfiction for each country. A while ago @Butterfinger had a few posts with title suggestions (children's books - www.litsy.com/web/post/2086111 - fiction - https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2086152 - nonfiction - https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2086230 - native writers/poets - https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2086261) I went through the fiction ones & could only find one that both sounded interesting & ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks was at the library, so my fiction choice is Ways to Disappear by Idra Novey. For nonfiction, I got an Eyewitness travel guide. I'm trying to find something that will have an overview of the country's history, geography, & politics without it being a 1000 page tome haha 4y
Butterfinger @Crazeedi if you wanted to do a reread, the first of The Seven Sisters is set in Brazil. @TheAromaofBooks I didn't think it would be so hard to find books. I really didn't. It looks like the only ones I could find were by Clarice Lispector. Hopefully, Vietnam will be better. 4y
Crazeedi @Butterfinger I thought about reread, but I found this one and theres another by her called The Seamstress, but I couldn't find on libby. (Though I think reread is a prompt for a challenge, hmmm, and that book is a chunkster too)oh well! 4y
Crazeedi @TheAromaofBooks and thanks for the links, see above comment on what I picked 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Butterfinger - I think you did a great job putting together the lists - I really appreciated it since I would have no idea where to start!!! 4y
Butterfinger @TheAromaofBooks thanks. I am having fun with the planning. 4y

Dragon Georgette Heyer 💕 6y
howjessicareads @Chrissyreadit - start with The Grand Sophy or Frederica!! 😍 6y
Chrissyreadit @howjessreads adding them to my TBR now! 6y
LeahBergen @Chrissyreadit I second those two to start with. 👍🏻 She‘s a comfort read for me. ❤️ 6y
Chrissyreadit @LeahBergen I def look forward to this! Is she similar to Anya Seton? 6y
LeahBergen @Chrissyreadit Nope. She‘s lighter and frothier and full of Regency-era wit. Almost “Jane Austen-lite”.😆😆 (edited) 6y
LeahBergen @Chrissyreadit Unless you opt for one of her mysteries (then she‘s very “British country house murder”-ish). 6y
howjessicareads @Chrissyreadit @LeahBergen - I like her mysteries, but her Regencies and historical fiction are better imho. I call her “Jane Austen but funnier”. 😃 6y
Chrissyreadit @LeahBergen @howjessreads sounds really good!! I need something light desperately. 6y

Call me crazy, but I wouldn't call this a "Daily Deal." Is this a mistake or some bizarre new strategy that Amazon is throwing at the wall to see if it sticks? I have bought one or two Heyer Kindle books, so does Amazon think I will be tempted because they dropped the price two whole dollars to $11.00??? WTH??

Bookzombie I wouldn't call this a deal either. 🤔 7y

The sequel to These Old Shades, Devil's Cub is a delight from start to finish. You don't need to have read the first to understand the second though it will add to your enjoyment! The Duke of Avon and his wife now have a son who is just as much of a trouble maker as the father. He ends up needing to leave the country for awhile after a duel gone bad. In a fit of pique he takes a girl with him to teach her a lesson, only he takes the wrong sister!

CrowCAH This looks good, if the cover is any indication: horse with a dude in a frock coat, breeches, cravat! ☺️ 8y
