This is one of the best in this series! Jam packed with action and answers. Gemma is seconded to a mysterious death in a garden square, a kind of locked room mystery, whose solution is both surprising and tragic. Meanwhile, Duncan is working to solve the attack on his former boss, Denis Childs, with astonishing revelations and results. Will Duncan and Gemma survive this one with their relationship intact? So. Much. Drama In a good way.5⭐️

A solid entry in the Kincaid & James series; a bit difficult for me to follow as it draws upon previous events in the series, and I read the last one 6 yrs ago. And BTW, I never noticed how much she talks about beverages, in loving detail: tea, coffee/lattes, wine, gin, limoncello, whiskey...☕🍷🍵🍸🍺😋

EvieBee I love food and beverage talk in a book! 3y
TiredLibrarian @EvieBee I wanted to try a limoncello and I hardly ever drink! 🥃😅 3y

I love books with maps, and one thing I always enjoy with Deborah Crombie's books are the lovely hand-drawn maps inside the covers. The illustrator is Laura Hartman Maestro. More about her& her work: https://www.deborahcrombie.com/index.php/dwell?id=39

November Road: read up ch 28 #botmbuddyread
Lilli de Jong: read up to book 7 #LilliRead
Started Silent Voices: on p. 140 #mysteryoftheweek

Reviewsbylola I need to read November Road. I thought Lilli was well done. 4y
Cinfhen Do you read a mystery a week??? I‘m having trouble with that genre lately. Every thriller feels like rinse, wash, repeat. Nothing original 😟any suggestions?? 4y
kspenmoll @Cinfhen I just finished The Scholar by Dervla Mc Tiernan, an author new to me. I enjoyed its themes, particularly the pharmaceutical background. Reminded me of an Deadly Cure, similar themes but set in the early stages (1899) of companies. That one leaves you hanging - author is lawrence Goldstone. 4y
kspenmoll Sometimes I just read cozys when I need a familiar escape from my life!!!! Sharon McCrumb is another author you might enjoy. (edited) 4y
Cinfhen Thanks for the recommendations 😁 4y

While listening to this book today this particularlyp passage delighted me. Em & I are the only females in my household & there are times I am happy to escape the testosterone & cuddle with her. She sleeps on me & anytime I sit or lie down she appears to join in. She‘s my girl. 😻❤️

Note: This is not Em- photo fit description of the cat in the book.

Day 13 of #31bookpics is #mysterious. Mysteries are my favorite genre. I actually don‘t own a ton of them though, because I rarely reread, once I know “whodunnit”. Other favorites, not pictured: Elizabeth George, Camilla Läckberg, Tana French, Ian Rankin, Arnaldur Indridason.

Day 15: #BookishMaps

I'm a fan of Deborah Crombie's Kincaid & James series, and I love that each book includes a map. Laura Hartman Maestro is the gifted illustrator. There's an interesting piece on Crombie's website about the creation of the maps with other examples of Maestro's work: https://bit.ly/2jVOXZ6

Love this series and this is no exception. This is book 17 in the Kinkaid/James procedurals and is very much a continuation of #16 so don‘t start reading this series here. Great descriptions of the enclosed garden squares in London (think Notting Hill) and in flashbacks to 1994 deals with some history of the racially motivated murder of Stephen Lawrence-only a side plot point but interesting. Plenty of procedure here but always focus on character

This is the latest (book 17) in the Duncan Kincaid/ Gemma James series which I love. I received this as a goodreads giveaway but also had the audio on loan from the library so I am doing both! So far I can tell that if you have not read at least the preceeding book To Dwell in Darkness you probably should not start with this book as it is really a continuation of the story lines established in that book. Compelling UK police procedural series!

I usually always start series with the first book but I took a chance and leapt in here with installment #17, WHAT!?

I enjoyed this! The MC's are husband and wife detectives, each working separate cases. I assumed their work would intersect, but was surprised at how separate the storylines remained. Now I want to start the series from the beginning; I wish I'd had more backstory info as I read. I love the London setting and the British mystery.

I liked this book in the series, but I hate when the "family" doesn't all get along! I'm glad the ongoing story got wrapped up, I could barely remember the characters from the previous book (from February!)

Great installment to the series. I wish I had waited to read it. The story required more concentration than I had to give right now and I couldn't remember some details from the prior books. I'll look forward to reading it again when there is less turmoil going on around me. Glad to be a part of the Kincaid/James story for a bit though!

I was really looking forward to this book and was disappointed in it. While Crombie does an excellent job showing how not in tune Duncan and Gemma were with each other, the book relies to heavily on events that happened 2-3 books ago. But the unforgivable part is the subtle anti Chinese sentiment that is depicted through three of the minor characters. It's ironic since one of the flashbacks is about a young black man killed in a racial incident.

This wasn't my favorite in the series; in fact it was probably my least favorite. Too much going on for depth, at least one big thing unexplained, and Duncan behaving somewhat badly towards both Gemma and his parents.

That being said, Crombie's worst is better than many mystery writer's best, and I wouldn't want to have missed one in this series.

I usually try to be really productive during Juliet's naps. But sometimes mama needs some me time. 🙂

DeborahSmall Sophie was the only one out of mine to sleep through the day. The first 6 months she fed and slept. It was 6 months of heaven...then the teething started. 7 years later she still only sleeps 7/8 hours out of 24. None of my kids napped in the daytime. If they did I'd definitely read!!! 💞 7y

I am a Deb Crombie fan, and this book does not disappoint. I love the way she blends the violence and darkness of Gemma and Duncan's investigations for Scotland Yard with the soft, comfy domestic life they share as a married couple with children. I also greatly enjoy the way Crombie delves into a particular London neighborhood in each book, giving us details and atmosphere. Oh and yeah--this is a cracking good mystery, too!

Audrey I am really looking forward to this release. Glad to hear it didn't disappoint. 7y

While the story ties up loose ends from the last book, I was surprised to find Kincaid & James some how less. Less in tune with each other, less trusting. I kept shaking my head at some of Kincaid‘s actions & was frustrated with how he seemed to forget that James is his partner in every sense of the word. He thought he was protecting her, but come on, she‘s totally kick ass! She doesn‘t need protecting. You‘re supposed to be partners, man!

Audrey @Tav even though I've read all the books, each book seems like a standalone. It's bc I can't quite remember all the details of the characters' lives, only the big picture. It's so refreshing to have excellent writing and development consistently throughout a series. 7y

Another excellent mystery by Deborah Crombie! Duncan and Gemma have some marital stress, and a mystery that started two books hence in the series becomes the focus of Duncan's investigations. I also like spending time with the supporting characters, Doug and Melody. They are further developed here. A great read for lovers of the series, but also for mystery lovers who might not have read Crombie before.
