In true Southern Gothic form, a reader's sense of foreboding is revealed via descriptive verse of scenery and weather. The isolation of the marginalized members of society along and their secrets leave one feeling unsettled. If kumbaya happy endings are what one is looking for then this isn't that book.

Happily, I don't need a lot of pages to realise if I like a book or not. I need more pages to decide id I shall DNF or not. This one didn't make it. Even though it's Capote. But I really don't know what to do with this book. It's so... meh... And, sorry, I don't like how the African Americans are portrayed. Apparently, Capote does criticise slavery, but in this translation it doesn't show. At all. Maybe I'll try the original at some point.

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes a book just isn't a match!! 3y

Capote‘s penchant for imagery runs a muck: “a night bird whistled in the fig leaves, a whippoorwill, & fireflies sprinkled the blue flooded air, rode the dark like ship lights.†If you like to read the 1st try of great authors &/or want to know what the Southern Gothic genre is, pick this up. Like many 1st novels, it‘s about love & the writer figuring out himself. The depiction of black life is shocking; it felt like it‘s set in 1848, not 1948.

I love old books... something beautiful about the smell and feel of the old pages! This old copy was a perfect match to the musty old feel of Skully‘s Landing and the amazing tattered, beautiful and dimensional characters of this story. Loved it! Merry Christmas!

IamIamIam You are literally the only other person I've ever found to own this book!!!!! 😂 It's one of my all time favorites!!!! 5y
LeahBergen @IamIamIam Really?? 😆 I guess I‘d better read it soon then (I love Capote)! 5y
IamIamIam @LeahBergen I had a teacher give this to me in 11th grade. It was so beyond me at that time but I loved the richness of the characters. Every time I read it, I get something new out of it. ⤠5y
Chrissyreadit In Cold Blood amazed me, and I loved A Christmas Memory. 5y

🚚 I'm definitely traveling with Joel!
🚠I wrote a story once about the derelict hotel in the woods! I'd love to see that!
☠ In the book, any room with Amy in it! In the general literary world, probably Panem. Lol

Ugh choosing one fave out of these categories is sooo hard! I suppose I will choose Truman Capote, as he is both a literary author and a “mysteryâ€(true crime) author...
I love the tagged book, and this little quote from Capote highlights some of his favorites... I personally love that he loved Jane Austen 😊

Sigh. Capote has genius, but remind me not to read anything of his if I want to be uplifted at all. Eesh.

An engaging coming of age story, moving between dreamy scenes and childhood clarity, the story follows a boy moving to live with his father after his mother's death. His father seemingly nowhere to be found, Joel spends his days exploring his surroundings, which seem to fall apart through the course of the book, and learning of himself through the people he lives among.

Bradleygirl I'm reading this too! 6y

My book buying ban is going terribly. But what can you do when you find a copy of ‘Other Voices, Other Rooms‘ with a 24 year old Truman reclined on a chaise lounge on the back cover? #BadBoyForLove #Marchintooz #TrumanShow

readordierachel You buy it of course! 6y

Day 9 of #Riotgrams is #LGBTQpride. My pick for this is one of my favorite authors, Truman Capote. Known mostly for his short fiction, Other Voices, Other Rooms was his first novel. It is one of my favorites.

lynneamch There is something mystical about walking by his former home in Brooklyn. This book is a must for any bookish types living in or visiting (or just curious about) 7y

Jas16 @elkeo I had friends over last night who laughed at them after opening one expecting to find dishes. So thank you for that! 7y

I spent the last couple semesters of my undergraduate studies reading a whole lot of Truman Capote for my thesis. Although the particulars of this book are hazy to me now, I remember being drawn in and captivated by Capote's narrative. (Picture from Wikipedia since my copy is in storage) #debutnovel #booktober

IamIamIam I was given this in high school by a teacher who thought more of me than I ever did!!! I totally didn't think 16 year old me got as much out of it as I did years later but this has always been one of my top 5 of all time! :) It's a book to be digested slowly. 7y

This is the only Capote I've read besides In Cold Blood. It was weird, and the language seemed like it ran away from him sometimes, but I loved it. This is my favorite quote.

MrBook A Capote quote is always a great quote. 8y
