I bought this shortly after the 2016 elections. The title described my thoughts. Then I put the book on my shelf because I was feeling too raw. Recently I thought, “I‘d better read this before it‘s obsolete.” Well, the good news is, it isn‘t likely to ever be 100% obsolete. If you read politically, try this book. For me, every essay was worth the time.

This book‘s been on my shelf far too long. Even though it was compiled right after the 2016 election, the concerns still exist. Obvi. And I‘m proud to say I got through 90 pages without feeling sick to my stomach. But that‘s all for today ... back to Mary Oliver poems until I feel like I can continue with this book. #resistlist #readersresist #somedaysitsalltoomuchtoabsorb #notmypresident

I love the idea of this book but am less thrilled with the execution. It is contradictory in places and overall not tremendously helpful. Additionally, it hasn‘t aged well.

The book tagged is actually an older edition as this edition appears not to be in the database.

I thought this collection was stunning for the most part. I particularly enjoyed the essays by George Saunders, Dave Eggars, Linda Sarsour, Rabbi Sharon Klienbaum, and M. Dove Kent.

#JuneBookBugs Day 1 - June Most Anticipated

These are some of the books I'm most anticipating reading in June. Actually, it looks like I'm having a bit of a "Social Justice June" theme with my reading this month, including books about immigration, corruption, slavery, political action, and other relevant themes.

Just finished another #ResistanceRead and returned it to the #library. Admittedly it feels a little dated even now but is still an excellent read full of short essays by powerhouses on topics like women's rights, the environment, the economy, LGBTQ rights, and the media. I would encourage anyone to read who feels scared, frustrated, alone, or just pissed off!

This book, while obviously rushed to print after the election, was an interesting look at how different communties are reacting to a Trump presidency in the immediate aftermath. Some of the essays tend to hinge on the, "oh boy, what do we do? I think we should help each," message, the latter half of the book offers the most hope for the next four years. That alone is worth the price of admission.

Well, I did a thing I have wanted to do for a while. And it became especially important once Trump was elected. Today I became an investor in a local independent bookstore. This bookstore has done great community work and stocks very diverse authors, foreign literature and poetry. I've seen so many authors speak there and have always found a sense of togetherness there. So I put my money where my values are and invested. I couldn't be happier!

TheLondonBookworm 👍👍👍😊😊😊 sounds like a great decision! 8y

HardcoverHearts @TheLondonBookworm , @BeckyMerilatt , @Bookladylinda , @Notafraidofwords, @BarbaraTheBibliophage , @DebinHawaii , @Weaponxgirl - thank you all!!! I feel like a grown up finally for even being able to do this. I knew that this community would I stand the value of a strong community bookstore in times of confusion and chaos. I love my town so am just thrilled to be able to help. Yay, indie bookstores! 8y
HardcoverHearts @BraveNewBooks It's one of a very small chain of independent bookstores called Diesel here in Northern California. The owners want to sell it to the manager of the store. If he cannot come up with the funding then they won't sell it at all. They like his passion for the community and want to help him grow that. So he decided to ask from investors rather than do a kickstarter campaign to raise funds. So far the community has been receptive! 8y

I'm not as impressed with this as I'd hoped to be overall, but this quote from Gloria Steinem feels particularly apt this morning: "We have learned that family violence is the paradigm of all violence-- other than used in direct self-defense -- and in family violence, the most dangerous time is the moment just before or just after escape. A woman, or anyone escaping, is most likely to be beaten or killed then because she is escaping control."

Solid collection of essays related to various concerns with America led by Trump. I appreciated that they not only covered civil rights issues and the environment, some also looked at economic factors that impacted the election as well. I thought the essays were balanced and well-supported, but I would have liked more of them to include action steps along with their analysis and commentary.

A call to action with a dose of group therapy. I, you, we are not alone. Our feelings are very real. Our concerns are valid. Our collective voice is stronger & more powerful than that of a single person, group, community. What do we do now? We come together; we push ourselves outside our comfort zones; we challenge one another; we respect each other. ✌🏼

I didn't like every single piece but I'm glad I read it. It made me feel less alone in my outrage, fear and sadness. I would recommend it to others but it isn't a straight "how to" manual as much as a book showcasing ways to find your voice. Or making you think about what your voice actually is.

Most collections are a mixed bag and this one was no exception. I enjoyed some of these, essays more than others, but I appreciated the overall sentiment of hope and unity. I attended the Unity in Diversity rally in my community yesterday and it was uplifting. I firmly believe we all need to stand together against racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and prejudice against other religions. We are stronger together! Let's spread love!
