Regan's brother Liam can't stand the person he is during the day. Like the moon from whom Liam has chosen his female namesake, his true self, Luna, only reveals herself at night. In the secrecy of his basement bedroom Liam transforms himself into the beautiful girl he longs to be, with help from his sister's clothes and makeup. Now, everything is about to change-Luna is preparing to emerge from her cocoon. But are Liam's family and friends ready to welcome Luna into their lives? Compelling and provocative, this is an unforgettable novel about a transgender teen's struggle for self-identity and acceptance.

I got through this book super fast. Published in 2004, it tells the story of a transgender youth, but from the perspective of the sister. There‘s language that‘s outdated (G-girl instead of cisgender, for example), but the struggle is real. It‘s emotional and frustrating, and I‘m grateful things are somewhat better today. At least we have better terms.

Very, very thought-provoking and unique. Made me really think about gender norms, stereotypes and issues we have today in the world. #LMPBC #Round13 #GroupN @Lauranahe @HWarren

This book about a transgender teen girl written from the perspective of her sister captures a lot of the confusion family members must feel when a sibling comes out. It must have been so ahead of its time when it was written in 2004, but some of the slang/terminology is outdated from “parental units” to “GG - genetic girl” instead of cisgender. Still a pick. 🏳️‍⚧️ #audiobook

For #marginal prompt, the touching of story of a girl born in the wrong body and her sister.
I hated the main character (the sister) and felt so bad for Luna that is not even understood and supported by her family.

I have so many mixed feelings about this book, but mixed in the greatest way. It‘s the story of a teen transgender woman thru the experience of her cis-gender sister. I love the complexity of the 2 girls; you can see the myopic teen selfishness of both as well as their love & acceptance (though sometimes it‘s a conflicted acceptance) of one another. But I will say you will so one to destroy the parental units in this tale-now they horrified me.

CouronneDhiver Interesting! 7y

Eh. I couldn't help but be irritated by the fact that it was told from the sister's POV. I get this was a big deal at the time it was published but there are so many books out there now that are written by and about trans people that I was disappointed in this one and the constant misgendering. I also thought about how hurtful it could be to read this as a trans person and read the many horrible things that Regan thought about and said to Luna.

We had to say goodbye to our beautiful Luna yesterday. She was 18 and had kidney disease but it was still a bit unexpectedly soon. I can't say enough good things about having a wonderful vet come to your house so you can say goodbye peacefully. We love her so much and will miss her terribly. 💔

I loved this book so much. It is a wonderful coming if age book. To witness Luna's transformation through Regan's eyes was both heartwarming and at times heartbreaking. We all need a sister like Regan. This gem is a solid 4 stars ⭐️⭐⭐⭐ 🏳️‍🌈#translit #transbooks

I liked that this story was told from the sister‘s perspective and found Regan to be a believable teenage girl. Sometimes selfish and downright stupid. She could be resentful of Liam/Luna‘s struggles, but tried to support her sibling. My daughter recommended this book for the #readharder 2016 Challenge as my book about a person who identifies as transgender. This book made me mad at people‘s attitudes and had me crying in a few places.

Overall, Luna was a good story. However, it was a little too simplistic for my taste. Nevertheless, I would still recommend this book.

In a world where there is so much hate, this book is part of a crucial body of work: stories that illuminate the diverse experiences of people who identify as LGBTQIA. This book feels like it encompasses many of the complexities of what it means to grow up trans.
