American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus
American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus | Lisa Wade
19 posts | 8 read | 42 to read
A revelatory account of the new culture of sex that has come to dominate the American college experience. The hookup is now part of college life. Yet the drunken encounter we always hear about tells only a fraction of the story. Rising above misinformation and moralizing, Lisa Wade offers the definitive account of this new sexual culture and demonstrates that the truth is both more heartening and more harrowing than we thought. Offering invaluable insights for parents, educators, and students, Wade situates hookup culture within the history of sexuality, the evolution of higher education, and the unfinished feminist revolution. Using new research, she maps out a punishing emotional landscape marked by unequal pleasures, competition for status, and sexual violence. She discovers that the most privileged students tend to like hookup culture the most, and she considers its effects on racial and sexual minorities, students who opt out, and those who participate ambivalently. Accessible and open-minded, compassionate and brutally honest, American Hookup explains where we are and how we got here, asking not How do we go back? but Where do we go from here?

This author had a thesis that campus life is built around frats and house parties and hookups. My university was included and while I certainly knew some kappas who spent every weekend at shooters looking for Lax players, there were a lot of other people like me who had tight friend groups not based around the Greek system. I feel this book was very one-dimensional and lumped all students and campuses under one non-existent umbrella. ⬇️

Megabooks Some truths, a lot of assumptions. 2⭐️🎧 #audiobook #bookspinbingo update! @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 4y
Megabooks Should I read The Matriarch or On the Come Up next for my first bingo?? 🎧 #audiobook 4y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! I also get a kind of aggravated by books that just shove everyone into one big pile. I was an off-campus student to one of the biggest party schools in the state, but had a close-knit group of non-drinking friends who found plenty of other shenanigans to enjoy haha 4y

silentrequiem On the Come Up! It was excellent! 4y
Megabooks @TheAromaofBooks yes! This book was very all college students are the same. She would‘ve assumed that you were secretly jealous of the people who drank. 🙄🙄 and thank you!! 4y
Megabooks @silentrequiem I started it while I was cooking dinner. Good so far! 4y

A pretty accurate capture of hookup culture on college and University campuses, and not exactly a cheerful read. Through interviews and student journals, she reflects what is going on, and some of the topics this culture connects to. This would be a good followup to Missoula.

MyNamesParadise I was put off by that behavior when I was in college. So much of it is unhealthy. I read Missoula and that was hard to get through. 6y
ReadingEnvy @MyNamesParadise I do think hookup culture creates an environment for sexual assault 6y
ReadingEnvy @MyNamesParadise and yes, i'd call it unhealthy too! It's not just "let's all have fun and explore sex" it's intetentionally about prestige and acquirement and use, ugh. 6y

This is an interesting book about the prevalence for casual hook ups among the college age crowd. I liked how it presented the hookup culture as a problem for both males and females and how trying to differentiate emotions and sex is usually a bad combination. I'd recommend to anyone interested in sociology and sexual studies.

Such a fascinating look at gender, sex, and American culture. Wade avoids buying into common stereotypes and digs beyond the headlines about college kids and hooking up to explore the larger cultural issues at play.

Saving this passage for every time someone tries to justify a joke about sexual assault or rape to me. It's not okay to joke about sexual violence. It erodes consent. Also, it's gaslighting. If done repeatedly, it leads to victim blaming & shifts fault away from the (often men) who make these jokes. That puts (often women) in an abuse cycle that's hard to break from where we are perpetually at fault for things over which we have zero control.

I am so glad Wade is taking the time to deconstruct some of the racial bias inherent in hookup & rape culture. It's often overlooked and can lead to criminalizing POC. It may seem like a small thing to have racial "preferences" for dating and hooking up, but it's a micro-aggression that can lead to very real, negative consequences. Over-sexualizing -> racial bias -> "he assaulted her, not me" -> arrest -> jail. [I know I'm generalizing here.]

[TW sexual consent]

Holy cow. Erosion of consent was pretty bad when I was in college, so I can't imagine it's gotten much better, probably it's gotten worse and starts younger. Stuff like this is why rape culture is important to address—erosion of consent is a serious issue, as are the resulting mental health problems, cognitive dissonance, & social pressures that come along with it.

LeahBergen This is pretty mind-blowing. I mean ... I KNOW it happens, I HEAR about it happening, but still. 7y
BookishFeminist @LeahBergen It is mind blowing. What's worse is men or women who grow to expect sexual favors for other things because it's so internalized in this culture. 7y
AlexMay Well, if you're a promising athlete I hear it's ok to bend the rules (/s) 7y

😂😂 this is bloody ridiculous.

Apparently this is how the Modern College Experience was born—surprise surprise, rich white men didn't like the strict rules of colleges, so they literally burned them down.

(FYI if you see other posts from me for this book under a spoiler tag, they're for trigger warnings, not spoilers. TWs usually for sexual assault, but I don't post anything graphic.)

[TW sexual assault]

NOPE. Grinding is not a license to grope. Grinding is a license to grind at best. That's *it.* Anything nonconsensual is sexual assault. Full stop.

I hope books like this continue to point out harmful rape culture like this so we can better educate men & women about consent.

ReadingEnvy Today I'm headed to the first of a two-day workshop called "It's On Us: Campus and Community Summit on Sexual Assault." I'm so grateful to work at a university that is making such an effort to change the culture. But overcoming these kinds of beliefs is a challenge!! 7y

Starting this tonight for my in-person feminist book club on Thursday! Looks great, can't wait to dig into it. Kind of reminds me of Girls & Sex by Peggy Orenstein that I read and loved last year.

Noodle also wishes everyone a happy #NationalFerretDay!! She's been celebrating today by being a brat. 🐭🐾

4.5🌟 This book covers a lot of the same territory of Girls & Sex, but It's broader, including some queer and heterosexual male perspectives. She stresses that not all college students participate in hookup culture, but the point of the book is cover it, and she does a good job of doing that. It's also a well narrated audiobook. Overall an enthusiastic recommend! 👍🏻

EchoLogical Sounds like a good one. Thanks for sharing! 7y

Donna_sBookMinute Hmmm. No surprise -- but the concept of "good," unlike other wholesome qualities, has been downgraded. I don't think I know this author; but I don't buy this. 7y

Vegas mashup! Clockwise from top left: the view of the wave pool from my room. The audiobook I'm reading, mainly while I soak in the awesome tub. How much I built my $15 up to before I lost it all. 😱😱 And how far I walked between the airport and hotel/casino! 1/2 day #1 was fun!

Officially the best Valentine's Day. Not only did I receive a wonderful #CupidGoesPostal gift, but I also received a really thoughtful surprise care package from my best friend @mshelter. ❤️❤️ He found beautiful carved wooden bookmarks & a Christmas ornament, some kickass WWII lady post-its, & Kona coffee on his trip to Hawaii & an aromatherapy mist diffuser. Also got #bookmail! American Hookup & The New Jim Crow are book club reads this month! 💘
