White Road
White Road | Sarah Lotz
A cutting-edge thriller about one man's quest to discover horror lurking at the top of the world. Desperate to attract subscribers to his fledgling website, 'Journey to the Dark Side', ex-adrenalin junkie and slacker Simon Newman hires someone to guide him through the notorious Cwm Pot caves, so that he can film the journey and put it on the internet. With a tragic history, Cwm Pot has been off-limits for decades, and unfortunately for Simon, the guide he's hired is as unpredictable and dangerous as the watery caverns that lurk beneath the earth. After a brutal struggle for survival, Simon barely escapes with his life, but predictably, the gruesome footage he managed to collect down in the earth's bowels goes viral. Ignoring the warning signs of mental trauma, and eager to capitalize on his new internet fame, Simon latches onto another escapade that has that magic click-bait mix of danger and death - a trip to Everest. But up above 8000 feet, in the infamous Death Zone, he'll need more than his dubious morals and wits to guide him, especially when he uncovers the truth behind a decade-old tragedy - a truth that means he might not be coming back alive. A truth that will change him - and anyone who views the footage he captures - forever.

Sarah Lotz has scared me off of planes and cruise ships and now we can add cave exploring and Mt Everest climbing. Simon, eager to get some hits for his fledgling adrenaline website, decides to go explore a forbidden cave with an unstable older guide. The guide does not come back. Simon does, with more than he bargained for. The first part of the book in these caves had my windpipe choking me while reading what was going on. It was harrowing. 👇🏼

Reggie Desperate for more clicks his partner sends him to climb Mt. Everest. There are so many layers to not only the settings but the different characters in here, and I think Sarah did a great job integrating them all into a solid, good story. There‘s a video on YouTube where a guide takes her cave exploring to do research for this book and oof…I could not do it. Pick! 1mo

Suet624 Ooohhhh, sounds interesting! 1mo
Reggie @BkClubCare @sarahbarnes those first 50 pages were the summit of this book. It was crazy. 1mo
Reggie @vivastory I‘m gonna have to order that one. Just so I can be a Lotz completist. My libraries don‘t have it. 1mo
Reggie @Suet624 there is a lot about the 3rd who always walks with you in here. But I thought it was great. And the sections about MtEverest and the trials and tribulations were great. 1mo

Like books set in extreme weather, I love a book involving climbing Everest or some other daunting mountain. This book starts with our MC going into an underground cave system to film the remains of several young men who perished there previously. Things happen. Then the MC, intending to film more dead, joins a team climbing Everest. This is a horrible summary. If I hadn‘t had to work, I would have probably finished this in a day as I picked ⬇️

Bookzombie it up every chance I got and stayed up super late to finish it. It was creepy and disturbing. I will definitely pick up another book by Lotz. 2y
vivastory Great review! I also really liked this one & have enjoyed a few of her others. I especially loved The Three but do not recommend the immensely disappointing sequel 2y

Bookzombie @vivastory Thank you! I didn‘t realize Day Four was a sequel to The Three. 2y
Bookzombie @Cinfhen I hadn‘t really thought about it but yes it could work for expedition/exploration. Thanks! That makes three prompts checked off. 🎉 2y
Cinfhen Woohoo!!! #stacked 2y
Reggie I agree with Scott on The Three. It was so good and I‘ve always wanted to go back to her. I‘ll have to check this out. 2y
Chrissyreadit @Reggie @vivastory @Bookzombie I‘ve been reading nonfiction for my horror fix lately but this discussion has convinced me to stack The Three and this one. 2y
Bookzombie @Reggie Praise from you and Scott make me want to get to it soon. 2y
Bookzombie @Chrissyreadit I understand. I read The Five earlier this month and the lives of women, particularly poor women, at that time were horrific. 2y
Reggie I‘m reading this right now but he‘s trying to leave the cave where the dead were and he‘s about to go underwater because the cave narrows. Bleurrghhh, I feel my windpipe closing as I I read this!!!!! Lol 1mo
Bookzombie Lol! You can put this down as things I will never do. I love to read about it, but hell, no. @Reggie 1mo
Reggie Idk if you want but here‘s a short snow covered mountain climbing story with an uninvited climber you might like. If you‘d rather listen to it scroll to the bottom and you can play it. https://www.drabblecast.org/2023/08/14/drabblecast-477-the-eight-thousanders/ 1mo
Bookzombie @Reggie Thanks for sharing that! I really enjoyed the story. 1mo

The first section set down in the caves will be uncomfortable reading for anyone who hates small spaces. The middle sections on Everest are much better & revolve around the Third Man Factor - when people in peril feel the presence or even see another person who shouldn‘t be there. Benign, evil, or hallucination? 🌟4

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

It is so freaking cold outside - now that I am home, I might not leave the house until I have to work on Tuesday. Full on hibernation mode commences now....

EvieBee Oh what fun! 6y
AceOnRoam Brrr. Stay warm! 6y
Texreader Wow! Unbelievable!! 6y

StaceyKondla @Texreader - this really isn't very much snow, but the temperature is so freezing! It's -26 with a -32 windchill - cold enough to freeze your nose hairs 6y
StaceyKondla @EvieBee @AceOnRoam - I am warm and toasty with wine and good book. Can't think of a better way to spend the evening 😉 6y
Texreader @StaceyKondla Everything about that sentence scares the heck out of this south Texas gal. We anticipate going down to 26 in the next couple of days and we are all getting ready for our big freeze. Honestly that‘s about all I can handle—if that!! 6y
StaceyKondla @Texreader 😂 26 Fahrenheit would be sweater weather up here. It's all relative - hope you and your nose hairs stay warm 😁 6y
Texreader @StaceyKondla Oh, the 50s do us in. Where are you? 6y
StaceyKondla @Texreader - I'm in the other Texas, which is Alberta, Canada, and I live in Calgary 6y
Mdargusch Me too 🙋🏼‍♀️ 6y
Clare-Dragonfly That's my plan, too—though it's only going down to the teens fahrenheit here! 6y
StaceyKondla @Mdargusch - you are also hibernating? Or you also live in Calgary? Or both? 6y
StaceyKondla @Clare-Dragonfly - enjoy your hibernation 😊 6y
Texreader @StaceyKondla I can‘t fathom how you do it. My husband, from Norway mind you, announced this week he hates cold weather! It was in the 40s Fahrenheit. But he did grow up in Africa, so I consider him “one of us southerners.” 6y
EvieBee @Texreader Lol! We had a close to 70 degree day here in West TX. Crazy weather! 6y
Texreader @EvieBee Ooh I love West Texas. My mom‘s from Marfa. 6y
StaceyKondla @Texreader I don't know how you do the heat and humidity - at 25 Celsius I feel like I'm melting 😂 6y
Texreader @StaceyKondla So much easier when I was younger and would drive everywhere with the windows down. Now, it‘s called air conditioning. 😁 And fortunately San Antonio humidity isn‘t often bad. Houston and the coast? That‘s another story entirely. 6y
Lizpixie I‘ll swap! Today was 38C (100F) here with 25% humidity. I‘m currently camped out in my ducted air conditioning with no plans to leave the house till March.🌞🔥 6y
Mdargusch @StaceyKondla I‘m hibernating - I live in ohio. 6y
StaceyKondla @Lizpixie - yuck! That kind of heat is too much. Stay cool and enjoy hiding from the sun 6y
StaceyKondla @Mdargusch - enjoy your hibernation! We just got like 6 inches of snow overnight. I'm definitely staying in for the next couple days 6y

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not as good as The Three. The middle dragged a little and the ending was predictable but the parts that took place on Everest were great and had me turning pages at a furious pace. If you're looking for a great horror book about Everest, I recommend The Abominable by Dan Simmons.

Thanks @Kaye for setting up the family library card so I can access the great Ohio libraries all the way in Texas. I've been waiting for this book to show up on my library's digital shelf for months!

Kaye Oh boy, I‘m glad you found one already. I‘ve been wondering if you had a chance to get all your cards set up yet and look for a good book. Did you use the Libby app or Overdrive ? 6y
Aloisi_tribe I just got most of them loaded tonight. It's been a busy weekend. I used the Libby app. I like it a lot more than Overdrive. 6y
Kaye Yea I figured you‘d be busy since it was the weekend with everyone home. I like Libby too. I think it‘s a lot faster and handier, plus you don‘t need to go thru Amazon to put your ebook on your Kindle app unless you want to. It‘ll download right into your iPad. 6y

It usually takes me at least a week to get through an audiobook, but I tore through this one in two days! Both narrators were engaging and held my full attention. Hard to put down, I had to know what was going to happen next! This book gave me a creepy feeling and it‘s an interesting look into trauma, ptsd, grief, and loss. And it was exciting!

RadicalReader @Rachellynnwright what has been your all time favorite audiobook? 6y

An excellent thriller. Simon faces terrors both natural & unnatural in caves & on mountains. This was my first Sarah Lotz. It definitely won't be my last. Mulholland Books rarely disappoints!

The novel follows two mountain climbers, Simon and Juliet, who struggle with their demons as well as their aspirations. Juliet is a famed mountaineer hoping to make a historic climb, while Simon works at a shock journalism website that specializes in "dark" found footage. Unsurprisingly, things unravel quickly for both Juliet and Simon, and I hung on every word.

Soooo Sarah Lotz never fails to creep me out. The opening of this book describes a claustrophobic nightmare of a cave exploration that reminded me of the movie The Descent. I could feel my chest tightening throughout... it was rad.

vivastory If this was ever adapted as a film (as it should be) it should definitely be directed by the director of The Descent 7y

Sooo does anyone else start to crave certain authors right around the time it seems their newest title is due out? It's a feeling almost like a book hangover, when that last read is so fantastic nothing else is hitting the spot. The craving starts to overwhelm my reading mood. Admittedly it's worse for me with authors who release like clockwork. Needless to say, this is my most recent one. At least I have some of her SL Grey stuff in hand!
