Checked out our local Amazon bookstore. Better than expected, but the atmosphere wasn‘t as “stay and browse a while” as the Barnes and Noble I usually go to. Still find it humorous that they have a brick and mortar store.

So a good friend of mine lives in a real small town , if his Library doesn‘t have it , Amazon is a go to for books .He recently received an order, his address correct on the box , inside, packing list with another persons name , not his book.Worse yet, the book was intended as a Christmas gift .Now there is a third party involved.🙄Everyone makes mistakes but extra frustrating with holiday deadlines.

Tamra My account got hacked - not a convenient time. 😐 5y
DGRachel I firmly believe Amazon has gotten too big for their britches. I have had so much trouble with deliveries in the last six months that I‘ve started paying more and waiting longer for shipping just to have a more reliable service from my local indie or B&N. I‘m sorry your friend doesn‘t have other options. 😔 (edited) 5y
DGRachel Oh no @Tamra ! That‘s awful. 😔 5y
See All 9 Comments
Tamra @DGRachel annoying & waste of my time! Can your friend use BetterWorldBooks? Shopping is free. Also, there is Thrift Books & Abe Books, though shipping isn‘t free with those two. 5y
Leftcoastzen @Tamra He uses Book Outlet,Powell‘s, Daedalus, and Abebooks.Should suggest Better World. He and I are strict on condition, Thriftbooks doesn‘t appeal to me . 5y
Tamra @Leftcoastzen you can buy new books and shipping is still free. I am not picky generally, I‘m ok with gently used. I‘ve not had a problem when the book says it‘s “like new” etc. 5y
RavenLovelyReads Book depository delivers for free- I‘ve gotten the most beautiful editions of books from them 🤓 5y
Leftcoastzen @Tamra that‘s awful your account was hacked 😡 5y
Tamra @Leftcoastzen I have wasted a ridiculous amount of time dealing with accounts and security etc. because of it. 🙄 5y

DAY 27: I know we‘ve all seen this meme a million times, but it still makes me laugh. Supposedly it is a real photo and there‘s a car inside. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyway, it‘s more like: “Oh good, our books and Legos and Nerf guns and action figures and other random miscellany are here.” It feels like I get a delivery every other day. 🎅🏻

OrangeMooseReads I laugh at this every time too. I hear you on the deliveries, in December and March (Man Cub‘s bday is early April) I seem to get a lot of boxes. Lol 5y

Reviewsbylola The article doesn‘t make sense to me. Why can‘t we have both? Recently an independent bookstore went up across the street from our local library and there were arguments that it was a bad move for the community because it would detract from the library. I don‘t get that thinking. I utilize both but I‘m way too broke to buy every book I read!! 6y
Kappadeemom @Reviewsbylola I also think that libraries are adjusting and becoming more “user friendly”. We are getting a new library at the end of the month that will have a cafe. No telling what else, but much different than the old one! 6y
vivastory @Reviewsbylola I agree with you ?. Also, the smug privileged tone of the author is nauseating. "Technology has turned physical books into collector's items." Ugh. 6y

Insightsintobooks Please tell me this is a joke? That is ridiculous. The point of libraries is that they are free if you replace them with bookstores they won't be free. There will be many underprivileged children that won't get to enjoy books because they tend to be expensive and their parents may not beable to afford them. That goes for adults as well who are barely scraping by to pay bills, but love to read. 6y
Kappadeemom @Insightsintobooks I agree! This was published in Forbes - not a joke 😤 6y
vivastory If a library receives more tax money from local residents, it's because they voted for it. They are getting a value from the library. In 2016 my local library had a ballot initiative for more money & it passed! Now all of the branches are open on Sunday & they're modernizing several of them. 6y
Kappadeemom @vivastory That‘s nice! My library has been around since 1965, I think, so I am so excited to have a new one in a few weeks ❣️❣️ 6y
vivastory That's really exciting! Is it near your house? 6y
Kappadeemom Yes! It‘s even closer than the old one :) 6y
vivastory That's fantastic! I think after work and home, I spend most of my time in libraries. 6y
LiteraryinLawrence @vivastory Ditto for me! On average, I‘d say I visit my local library twice a week. I love my indie bookstore too, but like people have said, I could never buy all the books I want to read. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Libraries are so much more than just books. They‘re places to use computers for many people who don‘t have access at home! 6y
Reviewsbylola Ooooh I would love a cafe in my library! And I agree with @vivastory , definitely a very privileged tone in the article. 6y
GripLitGrl What a ridiculous article... I benefit from my local library & bookstores. Just like as @Reviewsbylola says i cant afford to buy every book i want to read so i benefit big time from my library. Plus a local library does a lot to raise community awareness tons of programs & events going on always. 6y
Victoria_C Everyone should read Susan Orleans‘ new book when it comes out this fall. And pooh to you Forbes. 6y

I do love Amazon (can‘t live without my Kindle!) but was struck by how funny it is that they put so many booksellers out of business ... and are now opening bookstores!! I kid you not! I bumped into this one yesterday. All the books are displayed with their covers facing out, so you can read them like webpages. Haters gunna hate, but it was a great bookstore! Lol

Went to an exhibition today of the German Photographer - Andreas Gursky. It was amazing the best photo was of an Amazon warehouse in Phoenix - it was incomprehensibly large and not all organised to the human eye. Diapers stocked next to GoT Monopoly, next to Tennis balls, next to Computer Programming magazines. It was fascinating to look at. #insideamazon #computerslovechaos

Today‘s the day! A bunch of finalist and winners are on sale today on amazon kindle!

BarbaraTheBibliophage Dude. I just posted what I bought. So many good ones today—all week really! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes! They love us, and they‘re killing me this week! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Absolutely! But next week the deals will go back to little-read stuff that is easier to resist. Phew. 6y

Ubookquitous This week has been murder on my wallet but makes my kindle happy 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ubookquitous Same! It‘s a shame they hold all the good newer releases to go on sale at the end of the year.... but seeing the ones I bought at full price earlier in the year I need to remember to put off buying the newest books until the end of the year when the sales are so much better. 6y
Ubookquitous @Riveted_Reader_Melissa yes, I learned that lesson last year! Lol I held off on many books hoping they‘d go on sale late in the year. Since Amazon bought Goodreads that happens more often because they see the trends! 6y

I always feel a bit bad shopping at Amazon. For books I should use Hive.co.uk as it is actually a front for indie bookstores. But Amazon is doing a 3 for (c8 on a fairly big selection of paperbacks. ? How can I resist? That's right, I can't! And the offer is running until the end of November! ?? This means SO MUCH bookmail! ?

PurpleyPumpkin I can see how it would be difficult to resist that deal! Must buy more books! You can always buy from the indie stores post-November. 😉📚 7y

I'm really not happy about the Amazon takeover of Whole Foods but the blow is a bit softened by the fact that I live in one of the 12 cities where Prime Now will deliver wine within two hours. I did it tonight (for research purposes) and I am fully on board. #bookandwine #Chicago Perfect for #ListsyPartyofOne Weekend 👌🏻

angrylilasian Great idea!! Wish I had thought of that tonight. 😄 7y
Lola @angrylilasian It was really amazing! They have a warehouse on Goose Island and also partner with local stores. My wine (and Carr's Water Crackers-I already had the cheese 😂) came from Plum Market which is just a few miles from me. But I didn't have to goooo! It was great-I ordered from my work parking garage and by the time I got home and changed out of work clothes, it was heeeeere. Brilliant 🎉 7y

As a person who loves bookstores & book culture, I refuse to support Amazon. This article highlights a big reason why: it's not actually about the books or the people. They claim to curate with algorithms & smaller selection, dismissing the fact that awesome community stores have long provided customized recs based on human interaction & passion.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/ct-amazon-store-chicago-rev-ent-0403...

Sace I do a lot of Amazon. I admit it. And I feel really guilty about it, too. I probably have no excuse. But I have one store in town - Books a Million. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Sace I'm with you...for better or worse my choices are Amazon or BAM...and the BAM is an hour drive away and hardly a community bookstore. After that it's Walmart (which is a 1/2hr away) and whose selection is horrible (and also isn't a community bookstore). So more and more I pick between the library and Amazon, and Amazon is my best choice for buying most times. :/ (edited) 7y
shelf-improvement @Sace @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I get that Amazon is the only choice for a lot of people and I consider myself lucky to be in a place with loads of options. But having worked in a bookstore and for a publisher, their business practices are super shady and it infuriates me that so many people don't have more, better options. 7y
See All 13 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @shelf-improvement I agree there... I'm all for more and better choices! 7y
shelf-improvement @Riveted_Reader_Melissa the fact that they're the only option is, IMO, really bad for books. :-/ 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @shelf-improvement I do feel very stuck in that department....I belong to 2 libraries now, Hoopla, Amazon of course, and Audible (which is basically Amazon too), and BAM. (edited) 7y
Sace @shelf-improvement That's what I hate the most as well. That I have so few options. And I remember when I did. I had a B. Dalton and the manager there knew his customers and his books. We had several fantastic locally-owned as well. I still mourn their loss. 😔 7y
Suet624 I'm with you about Amazon. And for those who don't have a bookstore in town, there are plenty of online ways to get books other than Amazon. For instance, I believe Powell's is an important bookstore to support, but there are many others that offer a wider variety of books. (edited) 7y
shelf-improvement @Suet624 If Litsy allowed gifs, I'd insert the one of Leslie Knope raising her hand on praise. 7y
Suet624 And I agree with you that Amazon's business practices are super shady. They will eventually determine what we're allowed to read. (edited) 7y
rachellayown YES, I agree! 7y
Suet624 @shelf-improvement, check out what our local bookstore just started doing-because of Amazon. http://www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/phoenix-books-launches-self-publishing-biz/Co.... It's an interesting article. (edited) 7y

This is happening in NJ...

minkyb It seems very strange. I guess Manhattan and Boston are opening stores as well! 7y
cariashley Weird... not sure how I feel about that 7y
CatLadyBibliophile This feels me with so much annoyance and anger. 😡 7y
See All 23 Comments
Notafraidofwords @CatLadyBibliophile yeah, I understand. This is in a wealthy area too. And inside a small. 7y
Notafraidofwords @cariashley yeah I feel uneasy. 7y
8little_paws I could understand this maybe where my mother lives. The only bookstore there is Barnes and Noble. But in cities with thriving independent bookstore scenes.... 7y
Notafraidofwords @8little_paws yeah this is not so much a city. It's mostly a wealthy suburb. Not very diverse. 7y
E-book I live in an area where any indie stores are about an hour, so I'd be thrilled to have this by me. Target is my closest bookstore! 7y
BookishFeminist 😩 Why. What town?! This seems odd in NJ, especially if it's in North Jersey. But if there aren't many bookstores in that area than any is better than none I guess? 7y
Notafraidofwords @E-book yeah totally agreee!!!! Bookstores should be accessible. 7y
Notafraidofwords @BookishFeminist no, there are other ones. But this one is inside a mall (pretty wealthy mall too). It seems a bit odd. 7y
BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords is it going in at short hills? 7y
FernsAndFairyTales The one in Boston just opened yesterday. It's not actually in Boston though - it's in a suburb outside. Also in a wealthy mall. Interesting pattern here... 7y
Notafraidofwords @BookishFeminist no, garden state plaza. 7y
Notafraidofwords @fernsandfairytales hmmm that's interesting. I'm wondering if they are trying to sell less books and more gadgets. Is that the goal? 7y
Suet624 I try to stay away from Amazon altogether. They want to take over the world. ☹️ I'm with @CatLadyBibliophile. 7y
Notafraidofwords @Suet624 yeah I totally understand. Unfortunately, for me it's cheaper to buy on Amazon sometimes. . . 7y
Suet624 @Notafraidofwords yes, that's a given. And it will always be so. But it comes with its own consequences. Which I'm sure you know. Please know I'm not judging at all. I just try to find my books elsewhere - libraries, local bookstores, yard sales, book warehouses, etc. Amazon scares me, truly. 7y
Notafraidofwords @Suet624 oh no, I don't feel judged at all. I love yard sales and library sales. I use that method quite frequently. Amazon is scary. I get it. 7y
