Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches. There are some odd things about Nates new apartment. Chosen by Audible.com as the best sci-fi novel of 2012! Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches. There are some odd things about Nates new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isnt perfect, its livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries dont nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xelas apartment. And Tims. And Veeks. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything... "A riveting apocalyptic mystery in the style of LOST." --Craig DiLouie, author of THE INFECTION and THE KILLING FLOOR "A wholly original story that weaves together mystery and the apocalypse like a finely tuned band." --Evan Roy, Bricks of the Dead

My last audiobook finished in October had been in my audible library for a ridiculously long time, so yay for knocking another one off of #MtTBR.

I somehow managed to stumble in to several Lovecraftian books last month, including this one. Fascinating concept: a too-good-to-be-true LA apartment building with weirdness and House of Leaves vibes. Nate and his neighbors start investigating, and it only gets weirder.

Not my favorite Peter Clines book. I loved the first half of the book but the second half left me shaking my head. It was just too weird for my tastes. It is a story about an alternate universe and it just became too far out there. I also would have also liked a little more character development. 3.5ish ⭐

A book I really enjoyed. I liked the mix of mystery and horror and thought it a pleasant read. Might also work for people who want to take a glimpse at the horror genre.

This was a ridiculous book, which normally I wouldn't mind if it was executed well. But unfortunately this wasn't. Big points, however, to the author for bending and blending genres, and also to the utterly fantastic audio narrator.

Part House of Leaves, part LOST, part Lovecraft, this story is the best kind of adventure. Strangers become friends become soldiers in a battle against evil. At a time when all the characters are trying to become a better version of themselves, they‘re given the ultimate quest.
Highly recommend this one as an audiobook.
Put this on your list for spooky reads, if not for this year then next. You will be so glad you did!

I picked this up on a whim, after seeing a few good reviews about it. Besides what the blurb about a weird, creepy apartment building, I had no idea what this book was about - and I‘m so glad I didn‘t. Each twist was a surprise to me, and made the book so much more enjoyable.

Avanders Oh yay!! I've read 2 books by the author -- one I loved and one not so much.. I own this one and I'm glad to know it's good!! The one I liked was 5y

I'm behind in posting the books I've been devouring.
I REALLY liked this book. While I find so many plotlines predictable this one was not. I really enjoy this narrator, will definitely be a repeat listen, and, to be honest, I'll probably buy a paper copy as well.

This a a really good read. Just over 24 hours, start to finish. It was simply panic room type stuff with the dull but awesome edge of Stephen King‘s creepiness then it took a Lovecraftian turn. Subtle hints at various fandoms and a cast of people you notice from an 80s cartoon with meddling kids and a dog. And even all that is nothing compared to the actual book.

I did it! I (tentatively) arranged for Peter Clines to attend a Author Fest in Phoenix AZ that he wasn‘t initially billed for. He‘ll be in town for Comic Fest so I tweeted him if he‘d have time to attend. He tweeted back and said he‘d love to- if they‘d invite him. So I reached out to the bookstore hosting the author event (Pat King) and told him they should put Peter Clines on the bill.
A few tweets and emails later and I got them connected!🎉🎉

Drnkpnkprincess When is Author fest this year?! I hope I‘m in town 🤞🏼🤞🏼 6y

My review below is very general because I don't want to spoil anything about the plot (it is a mystery after all). Rating an audiobook is a little tricky too - the previous book I listened to had a narrator I didn't like and that left me wondering how much of the book I may have liked more if I had read it in print.

So I got a book delivery today which I opened because, well let's face it - when am I not expecting a book delivery, but it's not a book I ordered or a competition I entered. There was no information on the box or inside apart from an Amazon slip. It wasn't wrapped or any mention of not opening until the 21st or I would have suspected #secretsantagoespostal after seeing all the wonderful, gaily wrapped packages being sent out. It's a mystery🤔

Moray_Reads Surprise books! 🎉🎉 7y

Where to start. First of all this was by far one of the most engrossing books I have read in a while. I found myself trying to find any reason I could to listen to it. The banter between characters seemed natural and not forced, the mystery was so big and so intense that I had to just let it take me where it wanted to rather than try to figure it out. READ THIS BOOK NOW.m! I don't know if I can be more clear. it's that good. Listen to it at least!

Alfoster Ok, Ok, you got me hooked!!😜 7y
