The Goddesses: A Novel | Swan Huntley

The Descendants meets Single White Female in this captivating novel about a woman who moves her family to Hawaii, only to find herself wrapped up in a dangerous friendship, from the celebrated author of We Could Be Beautiful. When Nancy and her family arrive in Kona, Hawaii, they are desperate for a fresh start. Nancy's husband has cheated on her; they sleep in separate bedrooms and their twin sons have been acting out, setting off illegal fireworks. But Hawaii is paradise: they plant an orange tree in the yard; they share a bed once again and Nancy resolves to make a happy life for herself. She starts taking a yoga class and there she meets Ana, the charismatic teacher. Ana has short, black hair, a warm smile, and a hard-won wisdom that resonates deeply within Nancy. They are soon spending all their time together, sharing dinners, relaxing in Ana's hot tub, driving around Kona in the cute little car Ana helps Nancy buy. As Nancy grows closer and closer to Anaskipping family dinners and leaving the twins to their own devices she feels a happiness and understanding unlike anything she's ever experienced, and she knows that she will do anything Ana asks of her. A mesmerizing story of friendship and manipulation set against the idyllic tropical world of the Big Island, The Goddesses is a stunning psychological novel by one of our most exciting young writers.

This is the sound of you breathing. This is the sound of the engine.
Inside this small space, the air recirculates. It always feels cold. Outside You are rushing through the air so fast. There is always this rushing.
Stay here. Stay calm. Stay still.
Open your eyes.
Do you see me?
You won't want to see me, but you will.

#MarchMadness #disappointing

Playing catch up on prompts today.
This book came to mind as a friend was just asking me about it, attracted (as I was) to its setting on The Big Island. The setting & Kona vibe the author captured were the only things I really enjoyed about this one—I found the story not as dark & twisty as I wanted & the characters annoying. It was disappointing overall.

Hooked_on_books Pretty cover, though. 4y
Eggs It happens. Nice cover though 💚 @DebinHawaii 4y

I get tired of reading about youngsters (get off my lawn) so the topic of what is essentially a woman‘s midlife crisis appealed. Pahoa, Big Island is my happy place so the setting was perfect. The twists and turns of an obsessive friendship between a free spirit and a housewife were fun to read. Sadly, the writing is uber clunky. It crosses the line into distracting from the story. It‘s a shame because it could have been perfect. It just wasn‘t.

Nancy is hoping for a fresh start when her husband is transferred to the new Costco store in Hawaii. She finds a new friend in her yoga instructor, Ana, but is this interesting new person in Nancy‘s life really what she seems?
I enjoyed this one. It is full of drama, and also some laughs.

I wanted to love this book as the premise sounded good & I'm a sucker for Hawaii-set books but ultimately it didn't deliver what I was looking for. I found it predictable when I was hoping for twists & surprises & I mostly wanted to shake or smack Nancy, the MC, along with all of the other characters. I liked the author's descriptions of life in Hawaii & the Big Island---she captured the vibe well--but it wasn't enough to make it a pick for me.😬

Wednesday means avocado toast 🥑🍞and coffee ☕️ at the coffeeshop for breakfast, a chapter or two of this library e-book that I am trying to finish up, and then I have some work on a project to complete. I'm not really loving the book--although I do like its Big Island setting and I want to see how it all ends up.

2BR02B I like that they serve the toast on a miniature surfboard. 🏄 6y

Weird and kinda creepy. I agree with another reviewer that I wished Huntley would have cranked up the crazy to 11 near the end. It could have been so much better. I didn‘t like any of the characters, including the children. (Why were they pyromaniacs??) And why did Ana lee saying, “It‘s pronounced O-na”. It makes me wish I had a friend named Ana just so I could say this line every time she said her name.

Not the greatest book and would not recommend it. Picked it because it's set in Kona, Hawaii and I'm heading there for vacation next month.

Other books set in Hawaii you all would suggest?

This book was so disappointing. I should have given up on it but I kept going thanks to the fact that I loved Huntley's previous book so much. I could see the so-called "twist" from a mile away. Almost every single character was unbelievably awful. In fact, the only thing that I enjoyed was the Hawaiian setting. Don't bother with this one. I sure wish I hadn't.

Ran with the goddesses today. The narrator is so flat, but I think that is why it works...so far.

#TBRtemptation post 5! Recently released. Nancy and her family move to Kona, Hawaii, desperate for a fresh start. Her cheating husband makes amends, and the kids act up, and she's made a new friend through yoga, Ana. The two spend more and More time together, to the point where Nancy would do anything Ana asks. A story of friendship & manipulation in paradise. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

peaKnit Just got it with my Audible credit, been waiting for this one. I loved her first book and then you add Hawaii...done🌴🍍 7y

LauraBeth This drives me crazy 7y
Erinreadsthebooks "In other words..." here's what the reader already put together, and unless it's in a direct quote, "in other words" has no place in a book. In other words, whatever follows is totally unnecessary ??‍♀️? 7y

MamaGina Oh yes, when the author doesn't think we can get it the first (or maybe second) time, I say bail bail bail!!!🤓 7y

I appreciated that this book really took a deeper look into female friendships. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a new voice in women‘s fiction. The characters are really fleshed out well, and regardless of your current lot in life, I think you‘ll be able to find something relatable in Nancy‘s search to find herself again. And did I mention it‘s set in Hawaii? *swoon* ⭐️⭐️⭐️

AmbityScambity I received this book free from Booksparks as part of the #SRC2017 blogger promotion. #booksparks (edited) 7y

Nancy is looking to redefine herself, aren't we all, & she finds inspiration in a new friend, Ana, who seems to have all the answers. But sometimes answers aren't all they appear. This story of fast friendship, of being swept away by something new. The end will make the reader know that even they may never know the whole story. I loved this one, this is not the women's friendships save us book; it's something different entirely & it is wonderful.

I am in a super reading rut! The depression is real. BUT I did get a couple books to try to pull me out. Also it's pouring and only 60 degrees out so I busted out some fall gear to get coffee.

Notafraidofwords I hate reading slumps. I hope it gets better for you. 7y

Engrossing #audiobook. I'm remembering when I worked in Hawaii — all those many years ago — though I didn't make questionable friends there. I can sense the slow buildup of tension. Narrator Hillary Huber is doing a good job. A couple of oddities with the book itself, but I'm not turned off (at least not yet).

DebinHawaii Set in Hawaii?! Stacking it just for that. 📚😀👍 BTW--I'm happy to be your questionable Hawaii friend! Hah! 🤣🤣 7y
