This is yet another Scalzi that I enjoyed. In some ways it was pretty typical of his work and in others it has some interesting differences. Good read 👍

I am a fan of old and historical recipes and I like reverse engineering them. This morning, I made the recipe on this slip of paper left in the pages of a famous 1877 Canadian cookbook, shared by Athena Scalzi (the author's daughter) on their shared blog: https://whatever.scalzi.com/2021/02/04/a-very-special-cookbook-post/

I baked them at 375F for 15 min (YMMV), it's a dry dough.

DivineDiana I love that you tried it! ❤️ 3y
tournevis @DivineDiana They were good. A bit drier than O like but less sweet than most recipes, which ia a plus! They were all gone in less than a day. My son scarfed them down fast. 3y
DivineDiana True sign of a successful recipe! 😃 3y

When is it appropriate to re-imagine a much-loved science fiction novel? Scalzi has updated H. Beam Piper's story for a new generation of readers. I read both to compare.
Scalzi has updated a golden-age story with big ideas and cardboard characters to a more modern drama. He cut the cast from thirty to about six and concentrated on backstory and character development. The peril was amped up and the ending was dramatic. A worthwhile #scifi read.

Ruthiella I‘ve not read the original but I really enjoyed Scalzi‘s version. 😀 4y

#tropesinaugust

The hero is Jack Holloway, a smart-ass, debarred lawyer now works as a contract surveyor on a planet for a large (evil) corporation that exploits planets for their natural resources with little (no) regard for the native flora and fauna. Jack doesn‘t care so much about corporate politics or the banality of evil, just so long as he gets a paycheck. But then he discovers the Fuzzies, a #speciesmadeunique and everything changes...

wanderinglynn Love this book! 👍🏻 4y

My daughter had her first cross country meet today. This was the first time she has ever gone out for a sport. It was totally worth the 2.5 hour round trip to watch her run her heart out 🏃‍♀️❤️ Yay for audiobooks read by Wil Wheaton.

This book starts off so cuuute and funny and it's like a little moral dilemma with Ewoks. And then it turns into something that could be classified as a legal sci fi thriller if the characters weren't so adorable. But it also brings up uncomfortable ethical and environmental points as Scalzi novels are wont to do. A very quick and enjoyable reading experience.

1. the Netherlands, but living in Tokyo.
2. John Scalzi last year.
3. Around a hundred books on shelfs and 50ish ebooks & audio.
4. Train, I quickly get distracted at home.

Doing a reread. Actually a comparative reread. I reread H. Beam Piper's LITTLE FUZZY yesterday and now will read John Scalzi's update/reboot/redo of the story. Piper's version is a little rickety since it was written in 1962, but it holds up better than some science fiction from that time.

I finished this book in one day. It was captivating from the start and I loved the fuzzy's. John Scalzi writes the kind of sci-fi stories I love. I'd like to read the original H. Beam Piper story one day.

#julystats 18 total | 67/78 - I‘m going to have to up my goal! 😀

Pretty awesome month, especially considering I only read 1 book in the first 7 days of the month!

Tagged book was favorite. But I also enjoyed The Island of Books, Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore, and the Kingdom and The Prophet (Books 2 & 3 of The Graveyard Queen series).

1 DNF - The Light of the Fireflies was too creepy for me!

The great thing about work travel is all the reading I get done. The downside is I‘m behind on reviewing all the books I‘ve read!

This one is a #recommendsday, even if you‘re not into sci-fi because this isn't a sci-fi novel so much as Scalzi simply uses sci-fi as a vehicle to explore the issues of sentience and nature.

File this one under ‘don‘t judge a book by the cover (or even the blurb).‘ I picked this up during an Audible sale last summer. It‘s my second Scalzi, and I think I can say with confidence that I like the way this guy writes.

This is light, sweet, sad, and laugh-out-loud funny sci-fi, and that‘s a pretty awesome combination.

I definitely recommend on audio—Wil Wheaton‘ narration is fantastic. I devoured this book in 2 days!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

sprainedbrain @jwashreads my first was The Dispatcher - very different from this, but also really good. That was also audio, read by Zachary Quinto! 7y

Ok, this was fun, plain and simple. I enjoyed the story, characters, and the narration. Winner all around for me as I can't think of anything more I would want. I suppose it is not 'highbrow literature' but that should be pretty clear from the blurb/cover. There will definitely be more Scalzi in my 'to read' list.

I thought I'd get a lot more reading done in May but 🤷🏽‍♀️ I did go on two weekend trips and am trying to find a new job in a new city. Audiobooks have really allowed me to keep my reading up! I read some wonderful books this month so it was hard to pick favs. Also only read one #lgbtauthor this month so I am gong to try to ramp it up next month! Also maybe add some comics back in... here's to June!

Do you like exciting books that make you laugh out loud, then punch you so hard in the feels that you have a near breakdown at work? (Luckily, I was in grad school at the time and able to hide my bookfeels by isolating myself in the herbarium) Then boy do I have a book for you. I just recommended this to my brother-in-law and now I probably have to read it again. Added bonus: Wil Wheaton narrates the version on Audible, and he's amazing!

Loved this book! I really like it when a sci-fi book isn't total about how freaky looking a alien can be, or how much technology can be inserted in a few lines. What I really enjoy is how people interact with each other in some extraordinary circumstances.

Oh man - I don't often listen or read much in the way of Science Fiction and I LOVED this story & audiobook. The main character is an absolute ass who thinks he knows better than everyone else (and usually does) - and of course I absolutely loved him. This had me laughing and worrying and saddened and then laughing again! Highly recommend this!!!
