The Kitchen Boy
The Kitchen Boy: A Novel of the Last Tsar | Robert Alexander
18 posts | 28 read | 41 to read
Soon to be a major motion picture starring Kristin Scott Thomas, directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters) Drawing from decades of work, travel, and research in Russia, Robert Alexander re-creates the tragic, perennially fascinating story of the final days of Nicholas and Alexandra Romanov as seen through the eyes of their young kitchen boy, Leonka. Now an ancient Russian immigrant, Leonka claims to be the last living witness to the Romanovs brutal murders and sets down the dark secrets of his past with the imperial family. Does he hold the key to the many questions surrounding the familys murder? Historically vivid and compelling, The Kitchen Boy is also a touching portrait of a loving family that was in many ways similar, yet so different, from any other.

My #bookedintime for the Russian revolution tells us little of the revolution but a good deal on the minutiae of the last days & weeks of the Romanov‘s. Clearly a passion project of research this is only a soft pick for me. the research sang louder than plot or character - this may be because the set up of the novel is a man in his 90s recording his memories of something that happened in his teens but the story loosing something in his voice

Cuilin #RussianRevolution ✔️🎉 sounds like an interesting read. 9mo

#BookedInTime: Russian Revolution
February 2024
@cuilin @dabbe

This was a low pick, mainly due to the fictional parts of this book. The mystery and twist at the end didn't work for me at all, since I already knew the ending. I would recommend reading a nonfiction account instead.

dabbe On the spreadsheet! 🤩 10mo
Cuilin I just thought of this book 10mo

A fictionalization of the last days of the Romanovs as told from the perspective of someone in their household.

Wow, it really reads like a memoir instead of fiction. I could believe it true, if it weren‘t for the last couple of chapters, since of course the missing Romanov bodies were discovered a few years after this book was published. Still, interesting and horrific read about the last days of the Tsar and his family.

Slajaunie The story of Tsar Nicholas and his family has always intrigued me. 6y
KerriNTurner @Slajaunie their story is so tragic and so layered, it‘s impossible not to be fascinated by them I think. 6y

REALLY enjoyed this historical novel about the final days of the Romanov family. It made me see them as humans - flawed to be sure - and not just the symbols of old Russia they came to be. Highly recommend although be aware the twist ending strays far away from history and firmly into the fiction world.

A fascinating re-writing of history, filling in the gaps of a terrible tragedy. I was tempted to give up this book in the middle, because the day after day recounting of waiting for rescue and living on pins and needles was tedious after a while. I'm really glad my friend encouraged me to stick with it, though - the ending made it truly worthwhile.

KarouBlue I‘ve always loved this photo of the Romanovs. Elegant & stylish. Such a tragedy. 7y
RachLovesTV @MellieAntoinete There are so many great photos of them. And it really was. The author/narrator talks about how easily it could have been avoided in so many ways, as well. 7y

I'm taking a little detour from my black history month list to read this one for one of my book clubs. I majored in Russian language and lit in college, so I love reading stuff set in there. Here's hoping this one is good! So far, it's making me want to read the Nicolas and Alexandra biography I've had on my shelf for a while, to find out what's true and what's fiction.
