Accidental Empress
Accidental Empress | Allison Pataki
A New York Times bestseller, The Accidental Empress is the -captivating, absorbing, and beautifully told- (Kathleen Grissom).love story of -Sisi- the Austro-Hungarian empress and wife of Emperor Franz Joseph. The year is 1853, and the Habsburgs are Europe's most powerful ruling family. With his empire stretching from Austria to Russia, from Germany to Italy, Emperor Franz Joseph is young, rich, and ready to marry. Fifteen-year-old Elisabeth, -Sisi, - Duchess of Bavaria, travels to the Habsburg Court with her older sister, who is betrothed to the young emperor. But shortly after her arrival at court, Sisi finds herself in an unexpected dilemma: she has inadvertently fallen for and won the heart of her sister's groom. Franz Joseph reneges on his earlier proposal and declares his intention to marry Sisi instead. Thrust onto the throne of Europe's most treacherous imperial court, Sisi upsets political and familial loyalties in her quest to win, and keep, the love of her emperor, her people, and of the world. With Pataki's rich period detail and cast of complex, bewitching characters, The Accidental Empress offers -another absolutely compelling story- (Mary Higgins Clark) with this glimpse into one of history's most intriguing royal families, shedding new light on the glittering Hapsburg Empire and its most mesmerizing, most beloved -Fairy Queen.-

Elizabeth (Sisi) is 15 years old when she marries into the Habsburg family and becomes Empress of Austria. She immediately gains the favor of the people but life at court is very difficult for a wild and independent girl. This is one of the best books I‘ve read in a while, I was completely engrossed in it. 👍🏻

In 1854, the Austrian emperor is almost betrothed to princess Helene until he is smitten by her sister Sisi and the rest is history. The author sticks mostly to the truth: the horrid things her mother-in-law did to her were true. But it made the long book longer and often hard to read. Beautifully written; it‘s a good book but sometimes hard to bear. #Hungary #readingeurope2020 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

DieAReader Great job!👏🏻👏🏻 Some books/stories/subjects are heavier to bear witness to than others, so to speak. I‘ve also got an open 📖 that I‘m finding difficult to read. Nothing at all to do with writing or content, just a subject matter that 💔 & incenses me all at once. Know what I mean? 4y
Texreader @Squidget I completely understand. I think this was one like that, because of one darned person who made Sisi‘s life almost unbearable. 4y

#two4tuesday Thanks @TheSpineView for the tag!

1. I‘ve given my secretary her gift and all the attorneys in my office.

2. I sure the heck hope so! 😁 Probably the tagged one will be the last one I need to finish for #readingeurope2020. That is, if I don‘t have to work. I‘ve had a major project to finish that normally I get two months to finish, now reduced to about two weeks. So I may have to work. 😕

Two-and-a-half books to go to finish #readingeurope2020! Because work has been so busy I haven‘t had time to to finish the tagged book. It‘s long and I‘m only halfway into it. I‘m making such good progress despite my crazy work because I‘ve broken down and gotten audio and ebooks—even though I bought the books ages ago—so I can listen while doing chores and read the ebook during insomnia. So...another audiobook it‘s going to be.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I've put off the final Percy Jackson book and since I'm not exactly looking forward to it, I am listening to it instead. Too many physical books to read. 4y

melissajayne Was the list of countries that you have the one that was used for this past year? 4y
Texreader @melissajayne There were a few links provided at the beginning of the year. I chose one of them at random and these were the countries on that list except I added a few: Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. 4y
melissajayne @Texreader what were the links that were used? 4y
Texreader @melissajayne Oh gosh I‘m sorry I have no idea! I think the links were with the instructions for signing up for the challenge. I wrote them down and that‘s all I did with the link. I‘ve seen other Littens have some different countries when doing the challenge so I know there were discrepancies. 4y

I never heard of Empress Elizabeth. This is my favorite type of reading:. Heavily researched fiction writing about obscure historical figures that affected the world. When music was mentioned, I googled it to listen as I read. Enchanting. Next up: The Violinist of Venice.

she welcomed that pain. It was just a small penance to be paid for the selfish, inexcusable act of falling in love with her sister‘s groom. And what was worse, for feeling happy at the indisputable fact that he seemed to love her in return. Loved her, Sisi, even when Helene was meant to be his bride. And so, in the darkness, she cried.

I finished the book this morning in bed before I had to get up for work. Nothing like reading In the morning before work. This was our book club pick for the month of May. I really can‘t review it because it‘s not my “cup of tea”. I like that my book club causes me to read outside my comfort zone. But sometimes, a book is outside my comfort zone because it‘s not really something I want to read. Didn‘t hate it. Just not me.

I knew nothing about Empress Elisabeth of Austria before I started this book. Elisabeth had such a tumultuous life among the Hapsburgs and what started out as a beautiful love story, ended quite sourly. Now I know I have to read the suquel Sisi to see how her life played out since this novel stopped halfway though her life.

Lesson learned - don't pick up books next to the B&N checkout counter. I love historical fiction and am fascinated with Empress Sisi but I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading her Wikipedia page more than this book. I had to check that it wasn't YA because the way it is written assumes the reader can't be older than 13. Next time I am taking @Reviewsbylola advice on a book pick!

Reviewsbylola Always listen to your older sister. 👊🏻 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I'm fascinated by Sissi too! I was late night channel surfing once and found the movie (much romantised but lovely) based on her courtship/marriage (I went on to watch the sequels and then base a library school project on her) have you seen it? 8y
tracyrowanreads I still haven't found anything fictional about her that's as good as historical accounts. A shame really. 8y

"So quick bright things come to confusion" is not only a perfect epigraph it's an apt description of this book. Glittering and beautiful but deeply sad, just like its subject.

Still, it was engrossing and I will definitely be reading more about Sisi and the Hapsburgs in general.
