An Enchantment of Ravens
An Enchantment of Ravens | Margaret Rogerson
A skilled painter must stand up to the ancient power of the faerie courtseven as she falls in love with a faerie princein this gorgeous debut novel. Isobel is a prodigy portrait artist with a dangerous set of clients: the sinister fair folk, immortal creatures who cannot bake bread, weave cloth, or put a pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobels paintings are highly prized. But when she receives her first royal patronRook, the autumn princeshe makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyesa weakness that could cost him his life. Furious and devastated, Rook spirits her away to the autumnlands to stand trial for her crime. Waylaid by the Wild Hunts ghostly hounds, the tainted influence of the Alder King, and hideous monsters risen from barrow mounds, Isobel and Rook depend on one another for survival. Their alliance blossoms into trust, then loveand that love violates the fair folks ruthless laws. Now both of their lives are forfeit, unless Isobel can use her skill as an artist to fight the fairy courts. Because secretly, her Craft represents a threat the fair folk have never faced in all the millennia of their unchanging lives: for the first time, her portraits have the power to make them feel.

Sometimes you read the right book at the right time. I devoured this delightful fantasy in one sitting. While I do think there could have been some things fleshed out more and better developed, I overall enjoyed this debut novel.

4/5 ⭐️

This was an easy & pleasant listen! It was a pretty simple story overall - not a rollercoaster for your emotions but still entertaining. Many elements were very enjoyable for me & it had an interesting take on the classic fae realm. It gave me a more polished & comprehensive vibe reminiscent of Phantastes in some places. Clean romance with a little steamy desire but no follow through. I wish it was a smidge longer to wrap a few things up!

This was a good read with colorful writing. The description of the place the characters were was delightful to imagine. The two main characters were good together, and there were moments of laughter from me, the reader. I would have liked to continue to read more books, but this is just a novel with no sequel. I did get another spot on the bingo for #NSR23 Challenge @Nessavamusic. Also, my 3rd book for the #FabulousFebruaryReadathon @Andrew65

Excellent fairytale 🍁dangerous fae, clever storytelling, beautiful descriptions, & not a single use of the word “mate” (for all my fellow SJM fans) whimsical but sharp & atmospheric— also, can I request an eternal autumn?

A talented artist, Isobel is a favorite of the fair folk—that is until she makes a terrible mistake in her portrait of Rook, the autumn prince. Telling her she must stand trial for the mistake, Rook takes her to his world to answer for it. There‘s more at stake than they realize & they‘ll have to rely on each other if they are to survive unscathed. Less polished than her more recent work, Rogerson‘s debut is nevertheless a fun, entertaining read.

I really enjoyed Rogerson‘s Sorcery of Thorns & went looking for more of her books only to discover her debut is a book that I‘d read a synopsis for when it first came out (2017) & decided “nope, not for me.” Ha! Apparently I‘ve gotten smarter because fast forward to last week and I decided to give it a chance…I‘m only two chapters in & I can already tell this is going to be a fantastically entertaining read. Glad I decided to give it a chance!

The last five in my 15 favorite books of 2022. There is no actual ranking order to my favorites. These books were cozy reads and just gave me the warm fuzzies while I was reading them, despite being very different books.

Inside and out, fae are made of dead things.

Great idea (for which the tone is too light), then enjoyable execution (with some characterization inconsistencies) until ¾ of the book. The finale is a tad underwhelming, for a reason I can‘t put my finger on (maybe it‘s the aftermath of the tone issue, too). A quick read, typical for the YA genre, with some of its trappings. More original than the usual, tho.

Flawed, but I enjoyed it.

I adored this book. There was a mix of autumn coziness, love story, and adventure. The author didn't shy away from the complex untrustworthy, and sometimes grotesque, nature of the fae. Yet the book itself somehow felt comforting, like a cup of chai on a chilly day. Definitely looking forward to reading more by this author.

"Dim as it was, the forest glowed. The golden leaves flashing by blazed like sparks caught in the updraft of a fire. A scarlet carpet unrolled before us, rich and flawless as velvet. Rising from the forest floor, the black, tangled roots breathed a bluish mist that reduced the farthest trees' trunks to ghostly silhouettes, yet left their foliage's luminous hues untouched."

The Fae crave human crafts in exchange for perilous enchantments. Isobel succeeds in laying low until her unique paintings capture the eye of the Fae court.
I enjoyed this read even though I'm not the target audience. It had many of the characteristics of YA fantasy that made me roll my eyes as a teen, but it also had a lot of interest & charm that kept me reading even so. I really wished there was more about Isobel's family & her goat siblings.

When artist Isobel paints human sorrow into the portrait of the faerie prince of the autumn court, she starts a cascade of events that she could not have predicted.

This was a sweet fantasy. The romance was cute, but I wasn‘t nearly as invested in our main characters as I was trying in to figure out the politics of the courts. I wanted so much more of the world, and I was left with so many questions about everything except our leads. 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

I finished this over lunch today. Such a good story! Isobel is a young, mortal portrait artist whose patronage includes many of the fair folk, magical beings who on occasion visit her hometown, Whimsy. A new patron, the Autumn Prince, brings with him a dangerous adventure and maybe even romance.

🎧 This was very much a YA book.

Predominate Trope - instalove.

I didn‘t realize this was a teen romance when I accepted the recommendation 😆 yes I didn‘t read the summary. This was well-written.

I liked that the heroine is an artist who paints fae portraits.

The narration was great. The banter was sarcastic & funny.

If I were a teenager I probably would love this book.

I really liked this book. It‘s a traditional romance with an flare of fae, a bit of cunning, and a lot of rule breaking. Was in the mood for this kind of book, so it hit the spot. Not recommended for those who are not fans of a bit of instalove. Well written with flowery description.

Using as free space on #bookspinbingo. Realized I need to add my bookclub reads next month (or maybe just keep using free spaces for that?)

A painter and a fairy prince try to fool the fae--and themselves--into believing they aren't in love and breaking the most sacrosanct of laws: that a human and fairy can never fall in love. Not as incredible as a Sorcery of Thorns, Rogerson's other book, which I adored, but still a really enjoyable fantasy romance exploring the world of fairies.

An Enchantment of Ravens was beautifully written, there's no denying that. The story was charming, but it felt more suited for a novella, rather than a novel. I hardly felt anything after I finished reading the book, and that bothers me.

If anyone is interested reading Margaret Rogerson's works, I'd recommend starting with this, her first book, before proceeding to read her second. You'll see her growth as a storyteller better that way.

It's been a while since I've enjoyed a fae story as much as this one.I really appreciated the easy companionship btwn Isobel & Rook.I did find the parallels btwn Isobel & Feyre to be interesting; both painters, the family breadwinner, have 2 sisters, & were swept away to a fae kingdom due to a crime they unknowingly committed.Thankfully the parallels stopped there & the story developed into something special.I think I prefer Ravens to ACOTAR.
