The moment I picked this book up I couldn‘t put it down. Reading how Caitlyn coped with her best friend Ingrid death by suicide hit close to home. This book really helped me appreciate life more and the people I care about. It also helped me realize my passion photography. The way they described developing the photos and taking them was perfect. I don‘t know if I would have realized that‘s what I want to do with my life if I hadn‘t read this book.

This one was just okay for me. It was pretty bleak and I just thought the beginning started so different than where it went through the book. I just felt like this was really disjointed in spots and I felt myself losing interest frequently. I liked the characters a lot, but overall, it didn‘t offer anything new to this topic and fell a little flat for me.

After Caitlin loses her best friend Ingrid to suicide, she finds her journal, which she had tucked under Caitlin‘s bed. In reading the entries, no more than one per day, Caitlin learns of sides of her friend she never knew.

Heartbreaking but also hopeful. Nina LaCour writes great YA, getting to the heart of the story.

Hold Still by Nina LaCour

This was my second Nina LaCour book and I love her writing, but her books slay me.

In this heart wrenching novel, we follow the life of young Caitlyn learning to navigate her life after the death of her best friend and other half, Ingrid. Major themes in the book include friendship, loss and learning how to deal living without someone you believed to have completed you. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a tearjerker, especially young teens. This book is easily relatable as most struggle with loss at some point.

MissYaremcio Thank you for the review Kyra! If it is not your thing, feel free to grab a new one! 6/6 3y

This was a really good representation of grief and depression. Two subjects that are rarely well-represented in any media. I loved all the relationship dynamics, they all felt realistic and honest. I was holding back tears the hold time and when I did finally finished, I cried for ten minutes straight. This book made me appreciate my life more. PS. You have to read the author's note.

Huge #bookhaul came in today!! I totally crushed my TBR with this order, but who can blame me (except for my wallet 🤑). I have a ton of guilty pleasures in this stack, but I'm most excited for Hold Still--I'm hoping I can get to it before her new release this fall (which I still need to preorder ASAP!) #bookmail

This book is about how the life without art, laughter, music and joy that she shared with her best friend is hard for her and when she finds Ingrids journal she has the chance to experience the other side of her friend and uses the journal to help her through this rough time. If you like this book then read it to find out Caitlins side of the story.

MrsBabki What is the story about? I am a little confused. 5y

I loved “Hold Still” by Nina Lacour. It had a simple and easy to follow storyline, but complex characters, and great writing.

I loved the inner cover of this book! This was my first Nina LaCour book, but I‘ll be sure to read more! Not as dark as I‘d anticipated, but I will put a big TW for suicide/self harm because there a handful of graphic descriptions. I found it very easy to escape into Caitlin‘s life.

I read this book on my flights to the midwest to visit family for a long weekend. It was excellent! I was pulled in from the beginning. I also appreciated the author's note at the end, "We all move through life with our own pains and traumas and heartbreaks...there is much to be gained by sharing them, in whatever form we choose to do so, however messy or difficult, however unworthy or self-conscious or small we might feel when we do it."

This was my first LaCour book and while it won‘t be my last I definitely need some time before the next if all her books are this intense. A heartbreaking story lovingly written.

Lovely little book about grief and depression and life after loss. Major TW for suicide which is discussed even though it happens off-page. Like all of Nina LaCour's books I've read so far there's something a bit meandering about the plot that makes it feel very real and gentle somehow despite the topic and depths of grief the main character is facing. A solid 3.5 stars-- not the height of LaCour's skills, but glad to have read it.

I am realizing that I‘m a big fan of Nina LaCour. This book gave me the most cathartic “good cry” since probably the last book of hers I read! This was a very sensitive, touching account of a girl coming to terms with her best friend‘s suicide. Both girls were budding photographers, and the interactions between them and their favorite art teacher are so well done. About friendships, family, hope, and despair. Keep the tissues close, but read it.

readinginthedark I loved We Are Okay! I‘ll have to read this one! 7y

After her best friend commits suicide, Caitlin is left behind to deal with the aftermath. Through a journal that Ingrid left for her, Caitlin works through her grief and loss and begins to reclaim her own life.

A sad and sensitive portrayal of mental illness and the devastation that suicide wreaks on those left behind.
