This small format book contains brief, one-page sketches written by Julia Pierpont about 99 remarkable women, each accompanied by a facing full-page colour portrait by Manjit Thapp. There are plenty of familiar names—Michelle Obama; Erma Bombeck; Benazir Bhutto—and plenty more who were new to me, like: Bella Abzug; Emmy Noether; Gladys Elphick; Kasha Nabagesera; and Faith Spotted Eagle. Fun to browse through, a little at a time.

I hadn‘t heard of trans woman Jin Xing before. She hosted a variety show in China. Her criticism of some other Chinese tv shows, saying they dig at people‘s scars and consume their pain, echoes a similar sentiment that I encountered in Ai Weiwei‘s memoir.

Wilma Mankiller, “matron saint of leadership,” was the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation. “Mankiller, more soft-spoken than many of the (male) council members, installed a universal off switch for the microphones, to thwart interruptions.”

An unexpected—very welcome—flashback to my most recent trip to NYC, which was in 2016. The biographical entry in this book for Helen Hayes reminded me that I‘d seen a play in the Broadway theatre that bears her name.

EKonrad Loved that play! 2y

I flipped through this in a bookstore. This well illustrated book features 100 inspiring women spanning over many decades, telling witty short stories (not biographies) that captured the spirit of each woman..women who openly disregard traditional gender roles.
Interesting illustrations. Thapp is a UK-based illustrator who has gained online fame through her use of ‘digital creative programming with the pencil‘ via Instagram.

A delightfully illustrates little book that captures the essence of the 100+ women portrayed in its pages. Some overlap with Pénélope Bagieu's Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rock the World, but the two books could make a good double act.

So the past couple of weeks in the US have been a giant political dumpster fire. This book, about some strong and fearless women throughout history, has inspired me not to give up. And also to find a bunch of biographies about these kickass women.

This book is super cute! 📚 I have an e-galley of this book, but I am going to have to buy a physical one. This little book contains a two page spread for 100 inspirational women and includes several lesser known facts for each of them. 🙌🏼📖

I received this book as an #ARC and I am excited to read it. It came to mind for Day 24‘s prompt: #WeRise of #Aprella 🙌🏼 #feminist #celebratewomen

Jess7 I have ebook arc from #netgalley of this and it looks really good. I doubt I‘ll be able to see the artwork — so the physical book would be better for this one 6y

? I ADORE THIS BOOK. ?
Modeled after Saint of the Day books, these portraits of incredible women are inspiring. Great pictures too. Each "Matron Saint" of a particular cause or endeavor is given a feast day along with a biography of her life. Above is from the most recent feast day celebrating Wilma Mankiller. If you like Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls or want some stronger chicken soup for the soul, read this. #arc #netgalley #honestreview

RaimeyGallant Love this idea. 6y
