It seemed like a light read, but as a Maddow fan I thought I‘d give it a try. What a wonderful surprise! The author did an excellent job of addressing the serious struggles and traumas teens can go through via a school assignment. It really doesn‘t matter if you‘re a Maddow fan or not, this book will remind you what it‘s like to be a teen. Adults should read this and remember that teens today are no different from their own teenage years.

I loved this book! And it's perfect for the Correspondent prompt of #fourfoursin21. A high school girl in remedial classes is assigned to write to a public figure. She chooses Maddow, and continues her (mostly unsent) letters as she learns about herself, finds love, and discovers her only power lies within herself. CN for child abuse (non sexual). Great queer and disability rep.

Epistolary YA novel about a troubled teen who tells it all to Rachel Maddow via email. I thought the plot and characters were a bit weak, but it‘s a tough format to write in. I did enjoy it none the less.

I have been really digging audiobooks lately. Really enjoyed this one, and very apt for the time.

This is a super cute book. Brynn writes an email to Rachel Maddow for a school project and then continues to write to Rachel without actually sending the emails off. Her emails are like journal entries which take you through the ups and downs of her teenage life. 😍

Really enjoyed this one. Brynn reminded me of a lot of my students. It was refreshing to read a book that showed how high schools very often show favoritism towards the Honors kids and, intentionally or not, put them on pedestals. Honors doesn‘t mean “better”. Dear Rachel Maddow also made me better understand WHY some students may just stop trying, when they feel like they may never succeed.

It‘s heartening to see how the passion & optimism of real-life tv host Rachel Maddow might inspire a high school lesbian going through hard times. “Holy cable news networks. I‘d said the L word to her.” (Love.) Also heartening: being queer is never the issue. An epistolary novel with zippy lines like: “I have driven well past the borders of overshare city a million times by now.” Engaging #audiobook narration is by Khristine Hvam. #LGBTQ #YA

I live amidst trees. Not pretty trees but ugly evergreens that would really benefit from shedding their needles and getting new ones in the spring. The people here in Westing bother me too because they are kinda like the trees: we‘d all be better off if we burst into flames like a phoenix and got up stark naked out of the ashes with soft fluffy feathers.

Tanisha_A That last statement! ❤️ 6y
Lindy @Tanisha_A Thanks for commenting. The writing in this novel keeps shaking me out of complacency. 6y

I enjoyed this. She rights to Rachel as a school project and continues to because she needs someone to talk to. This caught my attention because I love Rachel maddow. This book is relevant to what‘s going on in the world today.

It seems appropriate to post this on #wcw. I love Rachel Maddow. Until about Dec 2016 I watched her every night. Then I had to stop for my mental health. I miss her. And what use to be our crazy politics. But I digress. This is a YA epistolary novel that is awesome. It‘s all emails, it‘s about hs drama (gawd it made me cringe), romance and politics. Definitely recommend! #readharderchallenge - epistolary novel

Day 1, Currently Reading: I found this at the library, and really, how can I resist a book called Dear Rachel Maddow? The story isn‘t especially cheery, but the emails-to-Rachel conceit is great, and I‘m hoping it ends on a happier note for Brynn, our queer, teenaged heroine.

I was on the fence about this book until about the last 50 pages. It dragged on a bit for me in the middle and parts of the story seemed a bit far fetched. But the ending is really good and actually made me tear up. A great little story.

The best thing about being an ILL librarian, is not having any shame about ILLing whatever the heck I want if my public library doesn‘t have it. #IheartILL. Reading this next.

Melissa_J So not being from Illinois or even the U.S. it took me a minute to figure out you were taking about ILL as in the short form for Illinois and not about being ill 😷 😂 6y

Melissa_J Ha ha!!! Now I feel silly 😜 Your post now makes total sense. I‘ll just go quietly back to my book now... 6y

I LOVED this book. It‘s a YA book and Brynn writes Rachel Maddow letters about the teenage angst of high school. Except that she likes girls, her brother died of an OD and her parents don‘t want her. Wow. It‘s so good/sad/authentic/funny/depressing/uplifting. This should be read. I think it‘s out in July. #YAbook #TerrificRead

arubabookwoman Does Rachel Maddow answer? I wonder if she knows about this book. She‘s one of my favorites. 6y
Samplergal She doesn‘t. Except via one time via production assistant. I never miss her when home. I‘m sure she knows about the book... I can‘t imagine the author not letting her in on it. But what do I know? Nothing was in the ARC about any of that. 6y

It‘s not always easy writing a good epistolary novel. There can be something lacking. This one fell a little short for me. I loved, loved the diversity and I wanted to love this one but I just didn‘t. But I still think that high schoolers should read it! I liked Brynn as a character but I also thought the story was pretty predictable. I liked all the Rachel Maddow stuff. It was funny. I wavered between a pick and so so.

Dragon It‘s too bad there isn‘t an “OK” in between so-so and pick. 🐉 6y

This book, y‘all. This BOOK! It is excellent! It made me angry and ragey and hopeful all at the same time. Brynn is a great character, and that has a chance to show through because of the format. Did I mention I love epistolary stories? You get so much information in such a little amount of text, it was a perfects method for Brynn to tell her story. And Rachel Maddow; I‘m with Brynn on that. Five well earned stars, an important book.

OMG! I got approved for an e-ARC! I guess that‘s at least part of my day sorted, then. I really need to work on my mystery knit along, but I can spare a couple of hours to read this (I opened it to see if there was an actual title page and got sucked right in; I love epistolary novels). I also got approved for The Brightsiders.
