Gladiator meets Game of Thrones: a royal woman becomes a skilled warrior to destroy her murderous cousin, avenge her family, and save her kingdom in this first entry in a dazzling fantasy epic from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Elemental Assassin seriesan enthralling tale that combines magic, murder, intrigue, adventure, and a hint of romance. In a realm where ones magical power determines ones worth, Lady Everleighs lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten. But dark forces are at work inside the palace. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family. Luckily for Evie, her secret immunity to magic helps her escape the massacre. Forced into hiding to survive, she falls in with a gladiator troupe. Though they use their talents to entertain and amuse the masses, the gladiators are actually highly trained warriors skilled in the art of war, especially Lucas Sullivan, a powerful magier with secrets of his own. Uncertain of her futureor if she even has oneEvie begins training with the troupe until she can decide her next move. But as the bloodthirsty Vasilia exerts her power, pushing Bellona to the brink of war, Evies fate becomes clear: she must become a fearsome gladiator herself . . . and kill the queen.

Enjoying this story. It flows quite well and is engaging. Trope is: the entire royal family is killed except for one insignificant member who then fights for the throne. Too much facetious use of the f-word, just to target an older audience. Otherwise it‘s a good YA fantasy.
For some reason, everybody wears black leggings and black boots.

humouress There are are few colloquialisms in the writing, the oddest of which was when they put toboggans on their heads to protect against the snow. It seemed odd to be wearing a sled 😄 but I‘m guessing it‘s supposed to be some kind of head gear. 13mo
humouress The ‘romance‘ element is more of ‘antagonism turning to desire and respect‘ and a mutual understanding of each others‘ backgrounds but I did appreciate that it wasn‘t insta-love 13mo

My German isn't near good enough to read the Deutsche version. I just like the cover better. Good, quick fantasy read about the distant cousin of the queen who survives a massacre by her cousin of all the other members of their family. She goes into hiding and joins a gladiator troupe but wonders if she should be doing something to help her country, which has been taken over by a murderer hellbent on war.

julesG Not sure this is a book you should read in German. It might be better to read a German author first. Let me know if I can help you finding a fitting book, I'm a native speaker of German. 2y
LitStephanie @julesG thank you! I am still pretty much at the travelers essentials point but am hoping to get better. I will definitely reach out when I am ready to tackle a book (maybe a small children's book, LOL). 2y

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 314.

This one was sitting on my shelf for a bit and I am glad, only because I can pick up the next book. This was a quick read, it read like a YA; however, this had cussing in it and some carnage. The MC was good, but she droned on a lot (woe is me) at times. Some romance though it isn't the main part with a beta male. Entertaining and a quick read, but not one that leaves you breathless and dreaming about it for days. Still worth a look see. 😁

This fantasy is on the lighter side. Fantasy-lite, if you will. I‘m a little bit perplexed by certain parts of the world (like mixing modern-ish bathroom facilities where everything else felt much older?) but overall I think the world is really cool. The use of magic is fun and I love the characters. Just a fun story. Much more lightweight than the typical high and epic fantasy that I often read. I‘m excited to see where the next installment goes.

shanaqui I think you've put your finger on something that nonplussed me -- it feels like an urban fantasyish world with an epic fantasy power structure, and it sits oddly. Then again, why not? 5y
intothehallofbooks @shanaqui YES!! Sort of an urban fantasy and epic fantasy mash-up. But I liked it! 5y

Fans of Estep‘s books will love this, #1 in an new series. The world building is exquisite, and so are the characters. The heroine wins friends by her actions. Light romantic elements leave us wanting more..just wait patiently for the plot to unwind. The villain here is a little too purely villainous. I prefer my villains to be more complex, a little less black and white. Still, this is an excellent book, well worth devouring in a single sitting.

Pretty predictable and derivative, but fun all the same -- maybe because it's derivative and thus half familiar already. Not sure if I'll read the sequel.

The MC had a tendency toward "woe is me" moments, but other than that I really enjoyed it. I'm excited to see where the story goes in the next one.

#BookishBingo: Book includes 3 kings (queens)
#Pop19: Book you think should be turned into a movie
#ISpy: Coloring options

There's no way I'm going to make it to 24 hours for #24in48 (self-employed folks don't get the luxury of time off), but here's my start. As someone said to me, this book is all kinds of derivative... but it's fun. I hope I can finish this and maybe a Daisy Dalrymple book or the second of Mary Robinette Kowal's Glamourist books.

Brrr! It‘s cold out! This is the perfect book to keep me warm. I haven‘t read much fantasy so I don‘t have much to compare this book to, but I‘m really enjoying it!

A great fantasy with a rage filled heroine who starts the story as a lonely, downtrodden Lady and ends as a Gladiator who saves herself and makes some good friends in the process. There is also the beginning of a romance, which is lovely.

Reading this story was very entertaining but I just wish it had more depth & tugged on my emotions a little harder. I wanted more potency to cement me to these characters. There was a romance element that was very subtle in its making and had a bit of a smolder to it. I am curious to see if the connection will intensify or go in an entirely different direction.?! I've done absolutely no reading the last few days. I have a good excuse though - visiting family. It was gorgeous (pictured) so I spent the whole weekend running around the farm with my adorable nieces and nephews. Peri and I are back home, so I plan on catching up with my reading.

Just starting this ARC. It's the 1st in a new series by Estep, but I'm not sure if it is fantasy romance or straight up fantasy? I'm fine either way. 😉

Beachesnbooks Oo a blurb from Ilona Andrews! Let me know how it is 6y

This could be good. Not out until October, and out of my price range so I will have to wait on a library copy. Still: fantasy romance adventure about a young woman who survives a royal coup, goes into hiding with a gladiatorial troupe, and must find some way to take down the usurper. Sounds like my jam. 😊 #fantasy #romance #bravegirls
