You're on an Airplane
You're on an Airplane: A Self-Mythologizing Memoir | Parker Posey
From the "Queen of the Indies" and star of Christopher Guest's Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show, Woody Allen's Caf Society and Irrational Manand cult classics including Party Girl and Dazed and Confusedcomes an irreverent, hilarious, and enchanting memoir full of personal stories, whimsical how-tos, recipes, and eccentric illustrations. It's hard not to love Parker Posey. A singularly gifted actress with a wickedly funny personality that belies her movie star status, her cross-generational fame stems from starring roles in such unforgettable movies as Dazed and Confused, Party Girl, and You've Got Mail, and her recurring roles in Christopher Guest's mockumentaries, including his most recent, Mascots, on Netflix. With remarkable candor and a refreshing perspective on life in the spotlight, Posey opens up about the art of acting, life on the set, and the realities of its accompanying fame. She explores her relationships with brilliant directors like Christopher Guest and Woody Allen, as well as the nerves and expectations that come with the territory. A funny and authentic childhood prepared Posey for a life of creating and entertaining, which not only extends to acting but to the craft of pottery, sewing, collage, yoga and cooking, all of which readers will find in this highly entertaining book. In You're On an Airplane, Posey delves into her personal style--unique, famously inspiring, and never indebted to trends--as well as her approach to everyday life on and off set. Laugh-out-loud advice from her legendary Greenwich Village therapist Mildred Newman appears alongside poignant portrayals of painful relationships and the love she has for her dog, Gracie. For fans of Nora Ephron's spot-on commentary, Jenny Lawson's absurdly comical foibles, Amy Sedaris's unexpectedly hilarious quips, and Carrie Brownstein's cool-girl appeal, You're On an Airplane proves Posey has a voice that will enchant fans and old and new alike.

If I ever manage to find myself sitting on a plane next to Parker Posey, please let it be like this book!
Fair warning: I love Parker Posey's work.

The way the book is structured is a bit hodgepodge like a conversation can be, jumping from topic to topic, going form the mundane to intimate, to musings and back again.

I added this to my #TBR after seeing actress Parker Posey on a talk show promoting it months ago though it seems to have some mixed Litsy ratings. She never fails to make me laugh in movies with her usually over-the-top performances, especially in the Christopher Guest films. I wouldn't mind sitting next to her on an airplane & would even give her the #windowseat 😉

Cinfhen Haven‘t thought about Parker Posey in a long time!! Glad to know she‘s still out there doing her thing 7mo

So frustrating. Parts were funny, & I quite liked the stream of consciousness style. But the parts about Louis C. K. & Woody Allen were troubling, so much that I looked to see if the Louis C.K. crap had come out after this was written. It hadn't. Posey has an extreme lack of self-awareness as to how she comes across. She‘s quirky, but she also acts like a person who‘d say, "Don't you know who I am?!" & pretend that she is joking & not really be.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This quirky take on a memoir is precisely what one should expect from the “Queen of the Indies.” It‘s written as a one-sided, stream-of-consciousness-esque conversation with the airplane passenger seated next to her. It‘s not Posey‘s life story, but rather, random stories from her life. It‘s an off-beat, entertaining essay collection, so those looking for a typical memoir might be disappointed. I liked it!

For all my fellow dog lovers:

“I don‘t trust people who don‘t like dogs but I trust dogs who don‘t like people. When people say, “I‘m not really a dog person,” all I hear is, “I‘m not really a person.”

😆💚🐾

AlaMich I expand that to include people who don‘t like animals in general. 10mo

Weaponxgirl Aww man, can I defend myself in explaining that when I personally say I‘m not really a dog person it‘s not because I dislike them but because I won‘t drop everything to try and say hello to one when I see one like I will with cats. I still like them and say hello when I get a chance. Can I still be a person? 10mo
britt_brooke @Weaponxgirl Hmmm ... yes, I guess you can still be a person. 😆💚🤗😚 10mo

Parker Posey fascinates me. Listening to this book was wonderful and really did evoke the feeling of having a conversation with a stranger.

Some of this memoir was great- stories about sets she was on and funny things that happened to her. But it dragged a lot. And even as an audiobook the premise, with the airplane noises and breaks, did not make a lot of sense.

I think Parker Posey is a hilarious actress, and parts of this book made me laugh. But the whole premise/set up of this book, that she's randomly chattering to someone she meets on a plane, is just strange, and didn't work for me, especially in audiobook form. There were sound effects, and it was weird. I parts I liked the most were the notes about filming specific projects, like Best in Show. I wish there had been more of that.

Ruthiella Loved her in Best in Show! 1y

I highly recommend this memoir on audio. Posey narrates it herself and it is a true Norma Desmond performance. Whether lamenting the bygone heyday of independent filmmaking or meditating on her youth, family, and aging, this was an eccentric experience like her best roles. Sure, there are some odd diatribes and there's not much gossip, but the audio has canned sound effects and music by Hal Hartley. If that's not enough, I don't know what is.

kyraleseberg The book was a so-so for me; I wish I'd done the audio! 1y

This was such a weird memoir! I enjoyed reading about her life and the people she has worked with but overall it was a bunch of randomness thrown together with some really long and descriptive pages describing yoga poses and the process of pottery (both of which I skipped) 🤔 It was entertaining when I had just a few spare minutes throughout the day to read.
I love the cover and the bizarre photos placed throughout.

laurenlovesliterature She is pretty weird and random though 1y
kyraleseberg @laurenlovesliterature Definitely, that's why I picked up the book! But she jumps around so much and I have no idea why there were so many pages devoted to yoga poses and pottery in a memoir 😂 I wanted to hear more about her life! 1y
