Gathering of Secrets: A Kate Burkholder Novel
Gathering of Secrets: A Kate Burkholder Novel | Linda Castillo
40 posts | 32 read | 19 to read
A deadly fire exposes the dark side of Amish life in A Gathering of Secrets, a harrowing new thriller in the New York Times bestselling series by Linda Castillo. When a historic barn burns to the ground in the middle of the night, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called in to investigate. At first, it looks like an accident, but when the body of eighteen-year-old Daniel Gingerich is found inside--burned alive--Kate suspects murder. Who would want a well-liked, hardworking young Amish man dead? Kate delves into the investigation only to find herself stonewalled by the community to which she once belonged. Is their silence a result of the Amish tenet of separation? Or is this peaceful and deeply religious community conspiring to hide a truth no one wants to talk about? Kate doubles down only to discover a plethora of secrets and a chilling series of crimes that shatters everything she thought she knew about her Amish roots--and herself. As Kate wades through a sea of suspects, she's confronted by her own violent past and an unthinkable possibility.

I‘m really taken with these Amish thrillers! The protagonist is Chief of Police Kate Burkholder, who grew up Amish (but left as an adult) and still speaks the language. This one involves a horrendous barn fire in which a young man is trapped and killed by the fire - suspected arson…

This is the 10th in this series, and figure 10 is enough for me. Great stories, but each is repetitive in it's own way.
Time to get onto some other mystery/thriller books

Another solid instalment of this mystery series. The investigation did seem to meander a bit at times, & Kate was a bit slow to put some aspects together, but it was still an above average read. There were some nice moments between Kate & Tomasetti as they seem to settling down to domestic bliss. 4🌟

For those who are triggered by such scenes, there are a couple of quite detailed mentions of sexual assault, so do be warned.

Loved it! She can be a little gratuitously descriptive when it comes to violence, but that doesn‘t bother me. Can‘t wait to read the next one.

This is my second Kate Burkholder novel and I love Castillo‘s style of writing. It‘s so concise and descriptive that it is almost subconscious the way she effortlessly paints the scene in my mind‘s eye, allowing the story to engulf me scene after scene like a movie. Living about 30 minutes outside of Lancaster, the Amish culture is so familiar around here. The “Pennsylvania-Dutch” terms so close to home.

bookaholic1 It's such a great series, I love it❤❤ 4y

Chief Kate is called to investigate a murder by arson of a young Amish man. She slowly comes to understand some very disturbing truths about the victim. Apparently this is book 10 of a series, but I didn‘t feel I‘d missed anything jumping in at this point. I really liked this and will certainly look for more books by this author.

The story begins with a murder of a young Amish teenager. Kate begins investigating and finds many suspects. She realizes that the victim was not what everyone thought. He was a sexual predator. Highly recommend.

The latest book in the Kate Burkholder series is another solid entry. There is a murder in Amish country, and everything is not quite what it seems at the beginning. The author moves the story along and keeps the reader engaged. Since I live a few miles away from where the series takes place, I enjoy seeing so many familiar references.

tammysue This is the first I‘ve read it the series and absolutely loved it 🧡 6y

I‘ve read them all (this is #10) – I used to love them – but they‘re starting to sound more and more alike. Similar phrasing, similar reflections, similar characters. Maybe I should read the next one with my eyes and not listen with my ears? I‘ll keep reading them because I love the setting and enjoy the main characters, but…

The prologue begins with an Amish girl committing suicide. 6 Mos later Chief of Police Kate investigates the arson death of a well-loved young Amish man on Rumspringa. Someone deliberately set the fire + Kate finds he‘s not as upstanding as everyone says him to be. The Amish keep their dark secrets hid until violence erupts jeopardizing Kate‘s life + her own violent past resurfaces. A 5 ☆ thriller full of mystery + twists. Highly recommend!

Overall, an enjoyable read. I really like Chief Kate Burkholder and her relationships with her staff, especially how she mentors her dispatcher, Mona. This mystery was slightly off for me though, maybe I predicted the ending too soon or how the pieces were almost forced together in some parts. Still, she'll remain on my must read list.

Castillo writes tightly constructed, gritty novels -- set in Amish country. I enjoy this series and always set down whatever else I am reading when a new one comes out.

Castillo writes a story that grabs a hold of you from start to finish, she‘s great author who you should be reading. She takes you into the world of the Amish with wonderfully written characters. She makes you feel like you‘re transported right into Painters Mill, Ohio. I received an ARC from Minotaur Books

I had the pleasure of going to watch Linda Castillo give a talk at my local library. She is wonderful to see if you get the opportunity while she is touring for her new book. I really enjoy her Kate Burkholder novels, and there is the added bonus of the books being set so close to where I live. Linda said I am the 2nd person to have recently told her about Litsy, so she may check us out.

10th Kate Burkholder book in Linda Castillo‘s Amish series. I have read them all and each one is a page-turner. The characters are well-developed and the plots are always intriguing. The circumstances of a death by fire in a barn of a young Amish man brings up the hurtful past of Chief Kate Burkholder. This series should be read in order. If you haven‘t started this series, you should, as they do not disappoint! Thanks to netgalley for an ARC.

Kaye You guys should email this author. She is SO nice. I emailed her after her first book came out because her book takes place about 30 minutes from here. I thought she lived nearby, but one of her friends does. Anyhow, every new book that comes out, she mails me a letter and hand full of bookmarks. She appreciates her fans. 6y
angel1 @Kaye thank you for sharing that with us. I will definitely have to do that! Can her book be a stand alone or do I need to read the series? I hate being lost in a book and not knowing the characters. 6y
Kaye Well, I‘ve frankly lost track so I‘m not sure if every book follows the same main character or if she has different ones. Just being me, I‘d start with #1 and read from there if all of them are in a series, just in case they‘re talking about something that previously happened. 6y
