Front Lines | Michael Grant
Perfect for fans of The Book Thief and Code Name Verity, New York Times bestselling author Michael Grant unleashes an epic, genre-bending, and transformative new series that reimagines World War II with girl soldiers fighting on the front lines.World War II, 1942. A court decision makes women subject to the draft and eligible for service. The unproven American army is going up against the greatest fighting force ever assembled, the armed forces of Nazi Germany.Three girls sign up to fight. Rio Richlin, Frangie Marr, and Rainy Schulterman are average girls, girls with dreams and aspirations, at the start of their lives, at the start of their loves. Each has her own reasons for volunteering: Rio fights to honor her sister; Frangie needs money for her family; Rainy wants to kill Germans. For the first time they leave behind their homes and families to go to war. These three daring young women will play their parts in the war to defeat evil and save the human race. As the fate of the world hangs in the balance, they will discover the roles that define them on the front lines. They will fight the greatest war the world has ever known."

✅ Read an alternate history for Book Riot's 2019 Read Harder Challenge. Having never sought out this genre before, I was pleasantly surprised to have a familiar face appear in my book search. It's been nearly 7 years since I saved Mr. Grant from consuming a beverage with a dead gnat in it at a conference. I didn't know he was a famous author (& husband to another famous author who also dined with us, Katherine Applegate) until after our meal. 4☆

LibrarianRyan I didn‘t realize Michael Grant is married to Katherine Applegate. 5y
MaggieCarr @LibrarianRyan small literary world. Huh? CeCe Bell is married to Tom Angleberger too. Did you know that? My husband could care less about my surplus of useless facts lol 5y

A great alternate history book about WWII where females can enlist. Front Lines follows three of these women as they fight for respect, equally, and their country. I loved Rio, Frangie, and Rainy. Their voices were powerful and real. I‘m excited to see what the next installment brings.

Another from my #BookOutlet haul; this one is about World War II, but in 1942, women are subject to the draft and eligible for service as well! It follows three young women who enlist, and their parts in the war; I cannot WAIT to dive into this one!

I‘m not officially 24in48-ing, but I am doing a reread of the first two Soldier Girls books because the third book is out on Tuesday and I forgot a lot of little details. I love this series, it‘s an alternate history of WWII where women serve alongside men in the US military. Grant doesn‘t shy away from the dark parts of war, but he manages to infuse humor into things as well.

Another great B&N Serial Read! I almost skipped it because war stories don‘t usually appeal to me (I‘d take swords over guns every time). While there were some definite cringeworthy moments, I still really enjoyed it. At first I had difficult connecting with some of the characters, but I loved Rainey and Frangie from the start. Not sure if I‘ll continue with the series, but I might! #serialreads #nook

Alternative history where American women could serve and be drafted during WWII. An intriguing idea, executed well. I started out more interested in Rainy, in military intelligence, but by the end was the most invested in Rio and her killer instinct.

Andrew65 Second time I've seen Michael Grant today, obviously destined to Read him! 7y

I like that this exists, but I renewed it twice and still got only a third of the way through, and I don't have time to renew it again. It may not have helped that the library billed it as teen fiction; I didn't read teen fiction even as a teen 😆 But that would not stop me from dissuading anyone from trying it. This is probably a case of right book, wrong reader.

rwmg Teen/YA wasn't a separate category when I was one. When you finished primary school the library gave you access to the adult section. They passed me up a year early because I'd already read everything in the children's library I wanted to. 7y
rabbitprincess @rwmg I think teen novels were starting to gain popularity in my teenage years, but I was reading Agatha Christie by 8 and John le Carré by 11, so I was already into grownup fiction by the time I hit 13. 7y

At B&N while puppy gets his paws cleaned and I spot these in the YA section...this is not my genre generally but I love WWII alternate history (this is set in a world where both men and women are eligible for the US draft), so I am sorely tempted...and YA loving Littens heard of these? (Also, why did it have to be written by a dude? 🤔)

Kangaj1 Front Lines was excellent! I have not yet read Silver Stars because it was not out yet, but it was on my list. 8y

An excellent alternate history wherein the military is court-ordered to both accept female enlisted but also draft women alongside men in the early years of WWII. I loved all the characters, and found the battle scenes fast paced and realistic. There's no gentling of material here: war is brutal, racism and misogyny are alive and well. I'm diving right into the next book, Silver Stars.

Happily devouring this between bouts of house work; our fridge died a dramatic death last night, and the new one isn't being delivered until tomorrow afternoon. All our food is on ice in borrowed coolers and I'm about to go play plumber and try to replace the water hose that will connect to the new ice maker. Also, generally, our house is a pigsty. So. Reading is a great escape.

Oh man, I love Benny Goodman. My dad, who was just a few years younger than the characters here (at 12, he took his First Communion and Confirmation into the Episcopal Church on Pearl Harbor Day), raised me on Big Band era jazz. This unexpected mention has me both laughing and missing my dad something fierce.

#recommendsday #hiddengem An amazing read with a fascinating concept: What if girls fought on the front in WWII? Grant totally delivers. Some highlights are superb characterization, diverse POVS (including WOC), feminism, real and bloody portrayal of training and battles, great friendships, and the fact that it is set on the little-explored North African front. Hard to believe this novel has so few reviews on GR. Can't wait for book 2! #frontlines

StaceyKondla I loved this one, too!! Bought it the day it was released and was sucked in from the start. I also really appreciated how Michael Grant did justice to the racism and sexism of the time. Definitely buying book 2 😊 8y

This. Was. Excellent. Masterful, thoughtful, and well-done. I HAD MY DOUBTS, GRANT. You are a dude writing from the perspective of women (and WOC at that) and I think you did a good job. Also, this premise is 💣💣💣.

Wow. That's all I can really say right now. Don't be fooled by the YA descriptor- this is a violent, bloody book. It's powerful and raw and so very ugly. It's war. The author doesn't gloss over the past, he doesn't try to make it pretty. I couldn't recommend it enough.

Holy crap. This was SO good. Grant describes three young girls at war with a realness and rawness I was not prepared for. The much-appreciated humor and general sassiness he incorporates in no way diminishes the gravity of this story. Looking forward to the sequel already!
