Gaston! 🦴 This MF, RA book is another story with a great meaning behind it. This book has an overall theme of family differences and acceptance. The story is about a dog named Gaston who looks a little different then the rest of his dog family. One day at the park he switches families with one that looked like him. In the end, it just didn‘t feel right for Gaston. Despite their differences, he knew he belonged with the family he grew up with.

acassatta The UDL principle 3.1-highlight patterns, critical features, and relationships fits well with the book, Gaston. We can notice a lot of alliteration within this book as well as relationships between all the dogs. Furthermore, ESOL strategy #14-simplify your speech by making it sow and redundant would be ideal for this book because of the similar lettering and alliteration throughout. The following website takes you to the authors website where... 4y

I love animals 💞 dogs are great and a great way to show a family and relationships with others. Thank you for the author's website information too. 4y
Spearsall Yay thank you for this review I‘ve been wanting to see a description on it! The way you described it this book seems AMAZING and I need it in my and my future students lives. This is just one little portion of SEL but I can tell this book will go a long way in any child‘s life. Perfect UDL principle applied as well 🐶 4y
DrSpalding Excellent summary and excellent alignment. Using the author website is a very wise choice. 4y

“Gaston“ written by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by Christian Robinson.

This heartwarming story of Gaston the bulldog and his poodle family examines themes of belonging, individuality, and the idea of what it means to be family.

ToddSalerno Since this is a fantastic read aloud book, here is a video that can be utilized for virtual learning. The reader helps students understand the text as she reads (UDL 2.1-Clarify vocabulary and symbols). In working through vocabulary, the reader also uses comprehension check techniques (ESOL 6-Continually monitor students‘ comprehension).

This RF book is so cute and perfect to teach young students about the importance of love and not judging how someone looks. The story follows a bulldog named Gaston who has a family of poodles. They meet a family of bulldogs with a poodle and think it seems odd so the puppies switch places only to realize that felt wrong.

Nrossi This book would be great for RA with all the sounds and emotions. UDL principle 2.1 clarifying vocabulary would be good for younger students and EL 2. http://readingtokids.org/Books/BookView.php?pag=5&bookID=00001469&pview=yes Is a good source with vocabulary words and activities for the book. #ucflae3414sp21 4y

The heartwarming story of Gaston resonated with me after I welcomed into my heart and home a spunky rescue greyhound named Armani this week. I absolutely adore the message of family and belonging in the book and can‘t wait to share it with future students!

This F book was a Choice Book Awards finalist written by a NY Times best- selling author. I have attached a link that includes several lesson plans, utilizing the book. cdn.ymaws.com/www.ilfonline.org/resource/resmgr/201617_Picture_book_resources/Gaston_final.pdf By creating a Venn Diagram that compares Gaston and Antoinette UDL 3.2 and ESOL 30 are met.

#MagnificentMarch Day 23: This one has #PuppyOnTheCover. Kenneth‘s review: “Try as hard as he might to conform, Gaston is the odd pup out in his litter. But one day a chance encounter in the park brings to mind a puppy maternity ward mixup.” Full review here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-lEF

This F picture book is about acceptance and inclusivity. Gaston tells a story of a very prim and proper bulldog raised in a family of poodles and their meeting of tough poodle and her family of bulldogs. Something looked very wrong to the families but they learn the lesson that appearances are not what matters, love is. This would be a fun RA book because I see students being instantly drawn to the cute pup on the cover of the book.

deiacovab I would use UDL principle 3.2 Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships when teaching this book to lead to a discussion of the general theme or idea of Gaston. I could use ESOL strategy 2 to promote cooperation when we discuss the books theme and what the real meaning of 'family' is. #ucflae3414sp20 (edited) 5y
deiacovab I found a very cute craft and compare/contrast activity here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Gaston-by-Kelly-DiPucchio-Comparing-... students can learn about opposites of words like “sip“ and “slobber“ walking with “grace“ and “race“. 5y
DrSpalding Several of your peers enjoyed this read aloud. That is a very cute craft to go along with the vocabulary in the story. Good find. 5y

This cute F book by Kelly DiPucchio emphasizes the importance of inclusion through the story of pup Gaston who is living with his proper poodle family until an outing reveals there is more to family than what meets the eye. RA because it is enticing & reveals an underlying meaning of the importance of inclusion.

UDL 3.2 -perfect for identifying theme

Keishla.O I loved hearing Dr. Spalding read Gaston to us in class, and it looks like the kids in this picture enjoyed it too! I definitely have to get myself a copy for my future students. 5y
DrSpalding Your picture is precious! I am so happy they enjoyed this. I love that you are checking out the books and using them with your students. Make sure you use the rubric and include an English learner strategy that aligns to the web resource. This is a helpful resource. Make sure you consult the author‘s website and publisher as well. 5y

Gaston by Kelly DiPucchio, Illustrations by Christian Robinson is a great RF picture book to use for a RA in your classroom. This is the story of a bulldog named Gaston a very proper pooch who fits right in with his poodle siblings! One day they meet a bulldog family and realize there has been a mix up between pups. Antoinette the poodle and Gaston switch places for the night, but realize although it looks right, it doesn‘t feel right!

alexialovesmith They go back to the park the next day and go back with their real families. This is a GREAT story to introduce the topic of diversity and inclusivity. UDLS3.2 and ELS30 can be used to explain the family relationships in the text. I would pair these strategies with this compete and contrast activity: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kelly-DiPucchios-Gaston-Compare-and-... #ucflae3414su19 5y
DrSpalding I truly adore this book and the sequel, Anastasia! Her books are excellent additions to your classroom library and even completing an author study about her would be a wise choice. 5y

A picture book that starts with the letter G for #BBRC.
Having a blast with this section! Letting my little reader choose 💖 This book teaches what looks right does not always feel right and family is not defined by genetics alone.

I am very drawn to well illustrated books & this one was no exception!
A story about two puppies switched at birth with a lesson that fitting in does not mean looking like everyone else & that who you are on the inside is far more important than what you are on the outside.

gergana08 Gaston, is a cute book that I would use in the classroom for younger students. The illustrations are great for the EL students. This is a great way to teach about diversity and generalization. It‘s an important topic to cover and that students don‘t have to “fit in”, with everyone else. 6y

This fiction book could be used in a kindergarten- third grade classroom. The book is about a French bulldog and a poodle who learn that family is about love and not looks. This book is great to show students that every family does things different and that that's ok. I really enjoyed this cute picture book and will use it in my class room one day. The book has been nominated for 28 awards. #UCFLAE3414SP18

Fiona_i Students can do a compare and contrast chart for the two families https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kelly-DiPucchios-Gaston-Compare-and-.... The students will be using UDL 3.4 and 3.2. This will help with El strategy 7. They will have the differences of the two families written down on a ven-diagram 7y
DrSpalding Rather than saying use, use the abbreviations of the teaching strategies on your log. I had no idea that this has been nominated for 28 awards! Wow. Make sure you identify the genre in every post.❤️📚 7y

Love this one. Gaston isn‘t quite the same as the rest of his family, but he is happy and loved. When he tries to fit where he looks like he should, it just doesn‘t feel right.

Great story about belonging, being who you are, and what family is.
